Travis Anderson is the picture of success. Handsome, sexy, and rich he could have pretty much any woman he wants. Sadly, the only ones he seems to find think that size matters. The size of his wallet, that is. He needs a woman to love him for himself. Aubrey Grayson just might be the one he’s hoped for. Aubrey thinks Travis is an amazing man, with or without his fortune. Growing up in foster care, she learned to appreciate the simple things in life. She’s happy going on a picnic and watching the sunset. No wallet needed. So when Travis takes her on an elegant weekend getaway in Florida, she doesn’t care about the beautiful gowns and fancy jewels. What she does care about is bumping into the hateful man from her past who decides it would be fun to tell Travis all the shameful secrets she has tried so hard to hide. When she finds a dead body, Aubrey quickly becomes a suspect and has to come clean to Travis about everything. Nothing in the world could be worse than admitting the whole sordid story… unless it’s being branded a killer. But there’s no way Travis is going to allow Aubrey to go to prison for a murder she didn’t commit. If he has to catch the real killer himself, that’s just what he’ll do.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Good mystery, good heat, good couple By Chitown Reader Great addition to a series that is well written. Nits are few: Travis' frequent use of "Kitten" as term of endearment made me roll my eyes and there were more than a couple of I's that should have been me's. All else was most excellent. Travis and Aubrey have worked together for 6-months and have just started a personal relationship. Aubrey needs to reveal something of her past to Travis but she fears doing so. They travel to a resort where a birthday party for one of Travis' mentors is being held. They do some tip-toeing around each other the day they arrive at the resort because this represents a new level in their relationship. Bree's plan to 'fess up to Travis comes to a screeching halt when a body is found at the resort, and it's someone from her past with whom she argued earlier at the birthday party. That context set, the rest of the book is filled with putting together the clues that will identify the killer while watching Brea and Travis fall in love. We also catch up with folks from previous books including Shane, Wyatt, Gigi, and others. This book scores a 5-for character development with extra credit for magically combining vulnerability with strength, a 4-for mystery (I figured it out fairly early) and definite 5-for heat. Yep, the sheets do sizzle but nothing that made me feel uncomfortable. Travis and Aubrey were a great team while sleuthing, in the office and in bed. They might be one of my top-5 couples this year, despite the fact that he's loaded and I usually hate the whole "rich guy" thing. Color me team Travis and Aubrey.

Travis is a dream. He is an Alpha male that goes after what he wants and he wants Aubrey. Aubrey wants Travis too, but doesn't think she is good enough due to her past. Together they find love and the killer. . .but, one almost looses the other by the killers bullet. Read and find out what happens . . . you won't be disappointed!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Language, language By Dot B. This book would have been a fairly decent read if some of the profanity had been omitted. The F-word was totally over used. I'm not a prude and have heard it used before but, this was overkill. It makes you think that the foul words were used to get a word quota. Not sure I'll read anymore of this author's books.

Inspector Anita Sundström is called away from Christmas with her mother to help investigate a domestic death. Her initial relief at escaping a dull festive season soon fades when she and sidekick, Hakim Mirza, find themselves dealing with a difficult case involving the murder of an unloved father and disliked neighbour. Though suspects and motives abound, they are having difficulty identifying the murder weapon. Has the killing something to do with the victim’s past, or is the reason closer to home? It’s not the Christmas Anita was anticipating, nor the conclusion she was expecting. ‘In Anita Sundström, Torquil MacLeod is developing a Sarah Lund for our decade’ Café Thinking ‘For anyone who enjoys an intelligent, well-plotted police procedural.’ Crimeworm ‘Anita is a tough female protagonist.’ Off the Shelf ‘I adore the whole Swedish vibe. I could just move there and sit in a pub with Anita.’ Northern Crime ‘Sundström herself is a great creation.’ Blue Book Balloon

10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. An Early Christmas Present for Me! By Dianne I don't generally read short stories or novellas, for that matter. But I have enjoyed the Malmo mysteries so much that I made an exception, and I'm glad I did! This one takes place in the few days around Christmas. Moberg is off in Tenerife as are Lasse and Jazmin, so there are some fewer characters to solve an interesting case Jultomten has been killed just before it was time to distribute packages. This is the way MacLeod can interject the Swedish Christmas traditions which adds greatly to the story line. Some words had me scurrying to google, and I'm hooked on learning more. It's Hakim, on call for the holiday, and Anita, called back from a visit to her Mother's (a happy occurrence) who handle the case of the death of Tord Sundin (Jultomen). Nearly simultaneously, there is a spate of house burglaries of well-heeled men whose homes are completely cleaned out. Both cases offer some interesting speculation, and deftly as ever, the two are solved. The ending is, as always, satisfying, and while I'm looking forward already to the next full-length tale, I have to say this one, novella or not, was just the right length. Now I'm ready for Christmas carols!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A good story about dumb cops. By Gorilichis I liked the mystery and the resolution, how seemingly unrelated cases tie together but... seriously, Anita Sundstrom and her team are the Keystone Cops of literary police officers. They are smart enough to figure out whodunit and why, but they can't seem to work out how to arrest someone without it becoming a huge mess. This is only my second novel in this series, and yet I can already see a pattern. I don't want the cops I read about to be dumber than me and characters making stupid choices is my biggest pet peeve. I would have given this novella 4 stars if not for this.

A call comes in to the duty detective about what seems to be a domestic murder. He assumes it will be boring and simple. If I had not read previous entries in the Malmo series, that is what I would have thought and I would not have purchased the book. However, despite the shortness of the story, the author manages character development, an interesting plot and a few surprises. Quite an achievement. I look forward to the next full length entry in this excellent series.

Together in one set, Books 4-6 of tWill Travel for Trouble series of short cozy mysteries! Trouble at Hungry Horse, Book 4: Minnie Crockwell, recreational vehicle enthusiast and traveler, no sooner leaves Glacier National Park than she encounters some trouble with her RV and tow car, necessitating an unexpected layover at a campground in the nearby small town of Hungry Horse, Montana. Within an hour of checking in, however, a gunshot rings out, and Minnie finds herself on her hands and knees hiding under a park bench. But the shot wasn’t meant for her. In fact, no one can even find the shooter or a gun. Peregrine Ebenezer (Ben) Alvord, Minnie’s nineteenth-century ghost traveling companion, knows that someone at the campground has been murdered, but not by a gunshot. It seems everyone hated the victim. Everyone! The question is who hated the victim enough to kill her? Minnie just wants to get her RV fixed and get on the road, but she soon finds herself immersed in the repercussions of a decades-old tragedy. Trouble at Snake and Clearwater, Book 5: Minnie Crockwell, recreational vehicle enthusiast and traveler, receives a call from her niece, Tiffany, who has recently moved from Arizona to Washington to be with her boyfriend. Lonely in a new area, Tiffany asks Aunt Minnie to stop by for a visit. Minnie, on the road in her RV just north in Spokane and hoping to head south to warmer climates for the winter, adjusts her travel plans and heads south to the small city of Clarkston, Washington, at the confluence of the Snake and Clearwater Rivers. Finding a wonderful RV site with a panoramic view of the Snake River, Minnie settles in for a short, relaxing visit with her niece. Binoculars in hand, she admires the scenery—from the golden hills across the river to the fishermen trolling in boats. The beauty of the scene is marred though, when one fisherman disappears from his boat right before her eyes. Peregrine Ebenezer (Ben) Alvord, Minnie’s nineteenth-century ghost traveling companion, can do nothing to save the man from drowning. In fact, he can’t even find him. But search and rescue teams do finally locate poor Jim Olson, only to discover that he didn’t die by drowning. Everyone liked Jim Olson, everyone except the person who killed him. Minnie vows to stay out of this murder investigation, but she feels responsible since she was the last person to see him alive. Besides the killer, that is. Trouble in Florence, Book 6: Minnie Crockwell, recreational vehicle enthusiast and traveler, is heading south to warmer climates by way of Highway 101, also known as the Oregon Coast Highway and Pacific Highway. She stops for a few days in the quaint little seaside town of Florence, Oregon, for a stay at the Tuscan Sands RV Park. Although the park hardly lives up to its evocative name, the sand dunes of the Florence beaches most certainly do. When in Florence... Minnie wastes no time heading to the beach for a walk with her nineteenth-century ghost companion, Peregrine Ebenezer (Ben) Alvord. Even if it is the middle of December. Less people on the beach though, right? What could be more relaxing than walking on a nearly deserted Pacific Northwest beach? But the dangerous and erratic driver of a blue Jeep, the fierce coastal storm that sweeps through overnight, a barking dog that paws at the sand, and the discovery of a body partially submerged beneath a log on the beach all conspire to take the relax out of relaxing. Against her will and Ben’s words of caution, Minnie cannot help but try to solve the mystery of the Trouble in Florence. Book 1 - Trouble at Happy Trails Book 2 - Trouble at Sunny Lake Book 3 - Trouble at Glacier Book 4 - Trouble at Hungry Lake Book 5 - Trouble at Snake and Clearwater Book 6 - Trouble in Florence Book 7 - Trouble in Tombstone Town Book 8 - Trouble in Cochise Stronghold (coming soon) Book 9 - Trouble in Orange Beach (coming soon)

Who wouldn't want to travel around in an RV and solve crimes with your very own ghost By Jolene This mystery series is the first one I have read done entirely in novellas. This rebook contains 4-6 in the series. Minnie, along with her hitchhiking ghost friend are slowly heading south from the Pacific Northwest enjoying the scenery. Now, if only she would quit finding dead bodies along the way!

The author explains that her style is to get right to the story and not include any fluff. I found that this didn't detract from my enjoyment at all. It's like watching an exiting half-hour TV show. Love this author!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Third book in the series was my favorite!!!! By carrie krogh This is the third book in the Sunset Glade Panthers and my favorite of the three books. This book is about Benny and Lainey or Elena to her friends. Benny, Tucker’s younger brother has been cursed by a witch to be a big foot for the rest of his life. Benny used to live with his brother but finally has his own place. Tucker and Brock have been meeting at his home to try to pinpoint the location of the other big foot that killed Hailey’s grandfather. Benny doesn’t like Brock because he thought it was Benny that was killing people and wanted him to turn himself into the authorities. Elena has come to Sunset Glade to visit her Aunt Bea. When she gets to her Aunt’s house she ends up falling in a really deep hole in the garden. When she realizes that she can’t get out she calls out for help and Benny, who is out roaming the glade because everybody is at his house having another meeting, comes to her rescue. Benny is instantly drawn to Elena and to what she smells like, cinnamon and vanilla. Benny loves to bake and spends the next couple of days creating sweets that have a cinnamon and vanilla theme and leaving them every morning on Elena’s front porch before anybody wakes up. Elena learns from her aunt that she is a witch and that she has some knowledge that she wants to share before she dies. Elena has the ability to see people and things for what they really are. So when she see Benny she sees the man not the big foot and falls for him. When his brother and friends search the last location that the other big foot is supposed to be Benny and Elena goes with them. When they find the big foot Benny realizes that it is actually the witch that had put the curse on him and they end up fighting. Benny gets hurt and Elena puts him in a protective bubble and Nora the evil witch starts to siphon all of Elena’s powers. Benny finally finds his inner panther and shifts for the first time and starts battling Nora again, while Elena calls out for help. Her Aunt Bea shows up and kills her evil sister and saves the day and everybody lives happily ever after. I really enjoyed this book I loved Benny’s character and I thought Elena was perfect for him. The chemistry between the two was hot. I will definitely be reading this series again. I received this free book in exchange for an honest review.

This is the sweetest, the tenderest, the furriest, the adorablest, just THE BESTEST STORY of this series!! (and yes, they ARE real words! :) ) ‘Simply moonstruck by the mystery of a courtship in the swamp’ That is EXACTLY how I felt too! Given how much I loved Spark, I wasn’t sure HOW the series could possibly get better, but then I read Ember, and YUP! It COULD and DID get even better, then along comes Blaze! WOW!!! Sennah truly did save the best for last! It's so magical, so beautiful, has so many surprises - good & bad - and is the PAWFECT embodiment of a Happily Ever After kind of FURRY TAIL!! There is lots of humor, friends, magic, shifters, family, baked goods (I am so craving fresh homemade cinnamon buns!), mystery and a couple of jaw-dropping, gasp inducing shockers and so much more! But alas, as is typical of a well-earned, well deserved HEA, and any FANGTASTIC story, there has to be some dark, some bad to make it all worthwhile! Of course, there is nothing like a bit of drama or evil happenings to make the Furry Tail couple in question realize that they DO in fact love each other and that they WANT & CAN have a HEA together!! I can't tell you just how SPELLTASTIC & SHIFTACULAR this story is without giving away spoilers, so buy this book, this series, so you can experience its PAWESOMENESS for yourself! As I was reading each of these three books, I grew more & more impressed with Sennah's ability to craft such FURRIFIC stories that held me captive from start to end. So captive in fact, that I was able to escape my pain & my “world” and become the characters, live in their world, feel & experience everything right along with them. Before I had even finished this book I just knew that I had found another author worthy of calling my Hero. Sennah has very quickly catapulted her way into my heart with her friendship & onto my list of Genuinely Gifted and Phenomenally Talented Authors and now has me beyond eager to read & re-read every other book she has published and will publish for many, many years to come!!

By Tanja ben is mostly happy, living out in the swamp, he knows with the way he looks he has no other choice. unless he wants to be captured, poked and prodded and probably end up dead because science wants to figure out how a sasquatch looks on the inside. until he runs into the screams of a woman who very clearly fell into a dug out pit in woods. pulling her out, he doesn’t know how fast he has to make a safe distance, but that doesn’t hold the woman back from wanting to reach out.Elena more or less felt a bit blackmailed by her aunt to visit her. as she falls into a muddy a hole, a honey voiced stranger rescues her. the day after baked sweet start appearing at their doorstep. at the same time her aunt is trying to tell her something important, something about looking better at people, seeing their true nature, their bare soul so to speak.both ben and elena are drawn to each other like a moth to a flame. but ben has a hard time thinking that elena can accept him for what he is, yet she doesn’t show fear, not a single time. all elena sees is a handsome, kind and caring man.things come to a heated confrontation as a local female sasquatch managed to lure some of the local were animals to attack tucker and brock and their mates. things go bad real quickly, elena tries to help the best she can but it isn’t until her aunt steps in that things change.having been alone for so long i’m glad to read that Ben will get his own HEA in this last past of the trilogy. it isn’t all sunshine as he battles with himself and the insecurities that come along with being who he is.it’s a sweet (literally) read, just hope elena doesn’t burn too much, a little something tells e she may be magical but not when it comes to matters involving food.you just have to grab this book to complete the series and see how the bigger story through them all gets concluded!free copy gifted in exchange for an honest review

The mission? Practically off-the-charts impossible. Four men must infiltrate (on foot) 30+ miles into Pakistan and abduct a key VIP of the Taliban. These men will be offered no support. No air support. No radios. No chance of rescue. And if they’re caught or killed, America will deny their existence. This is how the mission in Afghanistan begins for Nick Woods and your favorite members of S3 (Marcus, Truck, and Red). And unfortunately for them, it only gets worse from there... Nick Woods and his private, military security company (Shield, Safeguard, and Shelter) are deployed to Afghanistan by directive of the U.S. government. Their mission is nothing less than to save the government (and country) of Afghanistan. A clock is ticking and the Taliban is poised to seize the capital city of Kabul, taking over the country for good. The Taliban are stronger than ever, and well-led by an impressive spiritual warrior, who is respected across the country by most of the people of Afghanistan. Making matter worse, America's political leadership is sick of investing men and resources into a war that's now lasted 15 years. Nick and his team are sent to somehow find a way of dealing with the looming threat, and though the mission is impossible enough as it’s already drawn up, they'll soon find out that their enemies aren’t only in Afghanistan.

Barton Nick and S3 (Shield, Safeguard, and Shelter) are back in action.Just six months after their Mexican operation, the team’s been deployed to the sandbox. The objective: Locate and eliminate a Taliban elder whose power and influence has grown to a level that the US predicts will topple the new Afghan government. The Taliban has learned to fear the US and the silent death from Drones so, they’ve relocated their base of operations to the no-man's land of Pakistan. A location so remote and wild that the Pakistani military won't even go there.Nick and three of his most trusted team members are going in on foot with only the gear they can carry, no identifiable markings, and no support. As you can guess, their task will not be easy, even for a formidable team like S3. The action in this book comes at you often and fierce as the team tries to locate the communications headquarters hidden in the treacherous mountains. The data dump could be a veritable treasure trove of information on, not just the Taliban but the elusive leader that Nick, S3, and the US is desperate to locate before they can launch their plans to topple the Afghan government.War is hell and blood will be spilled. The battles will stretch from the mountains of Pakistan to the Presidential Palace in Afghanistan. When China and Iran enter the picture the US finds that a President and government that they've given millions to can switch loyalty just like the tribal people that inhabit the land.A masterful Taliban strike brings in the US air power. A traitor in the Afghan military will ensure that the US force left in the country will be removed as a threat to the coming attack. An almost insurmountable fight leaves S3 abandoned and when orders are given to stand down and return to base Nick will have to decide what's more important, going to jail for disobeying an order, or finishing a fight that has cost unimaginable losses. It's been said that this is the author's best work to date. Having purchased all his previous books I can say with authority that it is true. The thrill and action factor are high and fans of the series will know the cost of war by the end of the book.

He also did well with the scene setup.I enjoyed the read immensely, and would recommend it to anyone who likes action packed thrillers.

By Toolman Great read on a private military contractor group on a no-holds barred raid into Afghanistan. Led by Nick Woods, the team inserts and sees heavy action against the Taliban. One of the things I loved most about this book is how realistic the portrayal of the Taliban is. Rather than showing them as a bunch of dimwits, Stan Mitchell gets into their heads and helps us understand what has made the Taliban such a serious fighting force.Deep guerilla expertise, commitment to cause and support of the population are all shown to be used by the Taliban. While the Taliban have treated the people of Afghanistan terribly, slaughtering civilians and treating women and children like cattle, they have managed to gain enough popular support to keep their group going. Unfortunate, but true. Also very well done is the deep insight into the raiding force themselves. Rather than the typical super hero type narrative, we have instead real people and real soldiers fighting it out. Not like men of steel, but rather trained warriors up against a very tough foe. This is the best Nick Woods book yet, and shows the evolution of Stan Mitchell to one of the best military/covert action fiction writers. I really hope more people take notice and he gets the praise he deserves! Keep them coming Stan!By the way, for those of you that read my reviews, you know how super-critical I am. My most frequent rating is 1 star. So, you know when I give out a rare 5 stars like I did here, it is something that I find to be truly exceptional. (Feel free to check out some of my reviews of other authors to see my scathing comments...I don't pull any punches.)

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Gritty and Captivating By Maria M. First of all, I read this book in one sitting. The story is captivating, a tight crime drama that keeps you guessing and trying to piece together what's going on. But it's so much more than that too. The writing is clear and deceptively simple, surprising you with perfect metaphors and incredibly satisfying and smart turns of phrases. Mixed into that is humor. For example: "He was right. I wasn’t prepared to kill him. I didn’t spend the last couple years rooted to a bar stool, cultivating a gut because I was a man of action."What makes the humor and the wonderfully crafted writing (seriously, not a single word is unnecessary or out of place) even better, though, is the subtle yet pervasive bleakness that is part of private detective Glenn Wozniak's life. His is not a life filled with family and friends. It's lonely and gritty and dirty. And while Luchik doesn't focus on that too much, doesn't let the reader get mired in that aspect of the story, it's still always there, lending a dark backdrop to the action. This book is set in Chicago, my hometown, so I especially enjoyed all the references to and descriptions of the city. (And yes, the Italian beef place in Elmwood Park that's referenced in the book IS really good!) Luchik does a fantastic job capturing the feel of the neighborhoods he writes about. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and eagerly await more from this author. Top notch writing, an intricate and interesting plot, and the gritty and sometimes bleak emotions (balanced with clean writing and peppered with humor) of this story make it worthy of 5 stars.**Please note: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.**

Excellent and Gripping Debut Novel By Mark The Forgotten Boy is an excellent and gripping novel in the tradition of classic gritty American crime dramas. Under Todd Luchik’s jaded gaze the Chicago haunts I know and love take on a seedy undertone. Set in Chicago just before the invasion of Iraq, Glenn Wozniak, a washed out cop turned worn out private detective, takes a case he doesn’t want, a case he would normally pass by if he wasn’t broke, a case his gut is telling him to run away from. The daughter of a rich industrialist disappears and to solve the mystery Wozniak must navigate Chicago’s underbelly filled with crooked cops, drug dealers, and oddball war protestors. The city is on the edge of boiling over with the push for war and both Wozniak and the country are in too deep to turn back. Sit back, crack open a bottle of whatever poison you’re having and hold on as Luchik keeps the pages turning in this modern day gumshoe noir tale.**Please note: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.**

Every time I thought that I had answer, the story would go off in a different direction and I was wrong. I hope that there are continuing stories with this private detective, Glenn!

A rescue mission with some very hard and painful choices By Flying Squirrel Although I've been a fan of the Salinger series for while now, I've always felt after reading the books how these characters came to be. What was the relationship between the parties? What was the Agency like in the beginning? Why is the boss the way he is? What's the deal with Val and his partner? Finally, some of these questions are answered as this book takes you back years before Keeping with Killers. In addition to clearing up some of my nagging questions, the story was believable and the agents were fallible. The author doesn't make these agents indestructible like James Bond. Sure, they are pretty badass when it comes to hand to hand combat (some more than others). But they are human and can and will get hurt by the opposition. They also sometimes make some very bad decisions. Without giving away the plot, I'll just say they run into some real problems and they have to make do with what they have going in. There are some great plot twists in the story where at the end of the chapter, I didn't know what the heck they were going to do. Let's just say the author puts Val and his partner into situations where I felt it was the difference between them being screwed and really screwed. Overall, a great story with a freaking crazy climax.

He has five separate heroes which have led to 31 novels, with the Parish books leading the way with 17 entries. His plots are crisp and clean. His heroes are to die for. He can weave three plots together seamlessly. His best feature is the incredible banter between the characters. He mixes comedy, horror and police procedure seamlessly. You must read this huge credit to British literature!I did offer to nominate him for an MBE, but he declined. His loss, as I believe he would be approved. Oh well!Anyway it is your loss if you do not read him!

P&R 17 By tom elder Tim Ellis.P&R 17.The Kisses of an Enemy. There are a lack of murders so Parish & Richards are famed out to missing persons and Xena and Stick are at a drug bustling team. As with P & R books things never go to plan, so look out for the fireworks, the banter is as always brilliant. You'll love how this book keeps on flowing along. Highly recommended read.5* 29 October 2015.

The Ghost Fields (Ruth Galloway Mysteries), by Elly Griffiths

Review "The unearthing in Norfolk of a WWII-era U.S. plane, with its pilot in his seat and a bullet hole in his temple, propels British author Griffiths's well-crafted seventh mystery featuring forensic archeologist Ruth Galloway (after 2014's The Outcast Dead). The pilot is identified as Frederick J. Blackstock, a scion of a prominent Norfolk family, who served in the American air force, though Fred was supposedly lost at sea in a different plane and presumed dead. The decision of an American TV company to do a program about Norfolk's abandoned airfields brings Frank Barker, an academic Ruth was attracted to while working together on an earlier case, back into her life. The arrival of the film company and Fred's American daughter, Nell Blackstock Goodheart, sets the stage for a series of deaths and personal revelations that culminates in Ruth's being trapped in massive Blackstock Hall during a terrible storm. Griffiths nicely blends history and romance with gothic elements."--Publishers Weekly

From the Inside Flap The chilling discovery of a downed World War II plane with a body inside leads Ruth and DCI Nelson to uncover a wealthy family’s secrets in the seventh Ruth Galloway mystery.   Norfolk is suffering from record summer heat when a construction crew unearths a macabre discovery—a downed World War II plane with the pilot still inside. Forensic archaeologist Ruth Galloway quickly realizes that the skeleton couldn’t possibly be the pilot, and DNA tests identify the man as Fred Blackstock, a local aristocrat who had been reported dead at sea. When the remaining members of the Blackstock family learn about the discovery, they seem strangely frightened by the news.   Events are further complicated by a TV company that wants to make a film about Norfolk’s deserted air force bases, the so-called ghost fields, which have been partially converted into a pig farm run by one of the younger Blackstocks. As production begins, Ruth notices a mysterious man lurking on the outskirts of Fred Blackstock’s memorial service. Then human bones are found on the family’s pig farm. Can the team outrace a looming flood to find a killer?

35 of 38 people found the following review helpful. The ghosts of WWII By Divascribe I've read all of Elly Griffiths' Ruth Galloway mysteries, and this one -- her seventh -- does not disappoint. In this book, a construction worker near Ruth's home on the coast of Norfolk, England, discovers a buried WWII-era fighter plane with the pilot still inside. Ruth, a university professor whose expertise is bone analysis, is called in. So is detective chief inspector Harry Nelson, who's also the (married) father of Ruth's 4-year-old daughter. Their relationship is a rich stew of attraction, jealousy and resentment that adds spice to all of these books when the two are thrown together to solve a murder. In this case, the remains of the WWII pilot indicate he was shot through the forehead, not killed in the plane crash. DNA analysis shows that he was related to the upper-crust Blackstock family, who live in a crumbling mansion nearby. Members of the family act a bit odd when they're told about the remains in the plane. Could the dead man be one of the two Blackstock brothers who are thought to have died in the war? There are plenty of Blackstock family secrets, on top of the tangled relationships of Harry and Ruth (and their daughter Kate), a policewoman who's about to give birth to the child of a local Druid, and another officer who's fallen for a member of the Blackstock family. Evidence points this way and that, leaving the reader in suspense about murderer and motive.Readers of Griffiths' previous Ruth Galloway novels will find this a satisfying continuation of the story. Those who are reading this one as their first in the series will find that it can stand alone, but they may be inspired to start the series at the beginning.

16 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Have We Had Too Much of a Good Thing? By a reader I read all the Ruth Galloway mysteries the moment I can, and while this one has some nice moments, it's a bit too anodyne for my taste. It feels rushed, as if perhaps the novelty of writing about Ruth and her circle is wearing off for Elly Griffiths. The mystery -- never really a huge part of any Galloway book -- really takes a backseat in this one, and I'm afraid I don't think it's replaced by anything very compelling. If you are not familiar with this series, here's a quick non-spoiler summary: Ruth Galloway is a professor of archaeology at a university in Norfolk and lives in a house way out on the marshes, which she loves. She's a single parent and has several love interests who are also characters in the novels and usually involved in the mysteries themselves. There is also a policeman, Harry Nelson, and his group of officers who carry through from book to book in the series. The description of place is very evocative, and the archaeology is fascinating. That said, The Ghost Fields begins with an excellent premise -- a buried WWII warplane is uncovered, complete with skeletonized corpse in the pilot's seat who is not, it is immediately realized, actually the pilot! An old local family is involved, and what should be a nicely convoluted, historically based plot is underway. But somehow it never develops. We don't get a good feel for the type of people the Blackstocks are, despite the family tree at the front of the book and conversations among surviving family members. They seem to live in a vacuum. Bizarrely, one branch of the family has emigrated to Vermont and returns to England when the body is unearthed in the plane, but the significance of the immigration and any nuances between the British and American branches of the family are just not present. It doesn't matter, so why is it there?Another irritating aspect of this novel, and one that I haven't noticed in previous works of Griffiths, is silly editing errors. I am a broken record about the need for editors at publishing houses. Surely one of the advantages, in today's market, of being published by an actual house with editors is that someone will read your work and fix all those idiotic things you overlook in the mad rush to meet deadlines. But here we have, just a few pages into the novel (I mean, at least read the first few chapters, Houghton Mifflin -- your name is on this book!), Harry Nelson notes that the name of the field in which the plane is found is Devil's Hollow, and he thinks, "Jesus wept." On the very next page, he notices AGAIN that it's called Devil's Hollow, and this time thinks, "God help us." That's exactly the sort of thing a writer will overlook and a good editor can spot and delete in his/her sleep. There is a similar repetition with Ruth's "organizer handbag," which twice she observes is impossible to find anything in. Jarring things like this take the reader right out of the story.I think part of the problem may be that Griffiths is running out of real estate, literally. The Norfolk coast with its rising tides and vicious storms can only be mined so many times, and yet again we have flooding and blocked roads at the climax of this novel. It's been done before, both by Griffiths and by Ruth herself, and it's very hard to keep that kind of thing fresh and even probable. There's no suspense, either, in chasing Ruth around a house with a gun, as a villain does here -- we know now that she's a series heroine, and she's going to escape. More clever plot devices are in order!I admire Griffiths's books and I want them to continue, but I think they need a good re-think. (Not to mention a stern letter to the publisher.) The series is just beginning to get tired, and needs an injection of something really new. As wonderful as the setting is, it might need a vacation. Or perhaps it's Ruth herself, whose wonderful sort of phlegmatic personality is veering into dull complacency despite all her adventures with evildoers.Read The Ghost Fields if you are a fan of the series; you will want updates on all the characters you know. But don't make it the first Elly Griffiths you read. Find The Crossing Place for that, or the Janus Stone. They will hook you into the series!

Galloway is a fortiesh archeologist professor at an university in northern England. She is called in to help on cases when bones are found and the police have no idea how old they are. She is fiercely independent and lives out in the middle of nowhere raising her six year old daughter. In this installment, a bulldozer makes a grizzly discovery of a WWII airplane with the pilot still instill inside. Galloway is called in and discovers the body is the son of the family living in a nearby manor and he hadn't been piloting that particular plane. How did he get there and why? If that's not enough action, Galloway's friend is having a baby and Cathbad, the friendly druid, is not infallible. Several of his predictions are just wrong. Galloway has a little romance with an American film narrator but Inspector Nelson still has her heart. In all, a lovely story. Then why only 4 stars? Griffiths makes two swipes at Americans that not only set my teeth on edge but weren't even necessary to the story. They just come out of nowhere and left a bad taste in my sensitive mouth. One was about the machine that uncovered the airplane. Someone said Americans call it a digger and it really upset them. Personally I Have never heard the expression and I'm not sure why the statement was made. The second one was when there was a talk at a party and Dr. Galloway said that many Americans believed WWII was 1941-45. The fact is that Americans know it was a longer war but, for us, our involvement was really that period. Again I don't know why that snide comment was essential. Sometimes it is annoying for all Americans to be depicted as stupid. I still think this is one of the brightest and delightful mystery series being published.

The Devil in Canaan Parish is a southern gothic suspense novel set in south Louisiana in 1957. It tells the story of Bram and Sally Palmer, a middle class couple trying to keep apace with Sally's wealthy relatives, the Landrys, who own most of Canaan Parish. One night in late July, a tropical storm hits the small town of Techeville. Ira Meyer's jewelry shop is robbed and a stranger, Melee Mouton, arrives. The young Cajun girl goes to work as a maid for the Palmers, and quickly becomes a prisoner in the couple's bitter, covetous household. Soon an evil presence begins to haunt Melee, Bram and Sally, and the local sheriff gets involved to try to rid Canaan Parish of the devil that has taken up residence. Called a "suspenseful, mysterious, roller-coaster thrill ride," The Devil in Canaan Parish explores life in post World War II south Louisiana. Author Jackie Shemwell weaves traditional Cajun folklore into a page-turning drama that explores themes of desire, corruption and the evil that dwells in the human heart.

23 of 25 people found the following review helpful. The Devil in Canaan Parish was a bit slow at first, but it was an okay read. By The Bohemian Housewife My Review:I was pretty excited to read this book. The reviews looked great, and the storyline sounded fresh. I am changing up my review style a bit; I'm shamelessly stealing it from Anita from Iloves2read. There are some things I need to explain about my rating. What I liked:I loved where the story was set. The Devil in Canaan Parish is set in south Louisiana in 1957. I think the author did a good job setting it in that period. She made the characters pretty realistic. I was happy she didn't hide the racism that was felt in that time. I've read a few books that leave it out. Jackie Shemwell's writing style is very easy to follow; she doesn't leave a thing out. Her story was clearly painted in my mind. The ending wasn't something I expected. I don't want to give away any of the story, but rarely have I seen an ending like this. What I didn't Like:I felt the author included a bit too much back story. A lot of the backstory wasn't needed in my opinion. She could have cut some of it to make the story more to the point. The story didn't really start until the last 60ish pages. For having so much backstory, the ending felt a bit rushed.Final Thoughts:The Devil in Canaan Parish was a bit slow at first, but it was an okay read. I would read other books by the author just to get a second opinion of her work. It had it's pros/cons, as I listed above.I received this book from the author for an honest review.

Descriptions & character development made me feel like I was there & knew everyone involved. I look forward to reading more of the author's works. There were some editing mistakes that caused me to briefly pause, so my only suggestion is for the author to continue writing in this wonderful style, but have it professionally edited. I definitely recommend this hard-to-put-down book.

Who Killed Tom Sattler? Who Stole $350 Million from New Vision Strategic Investments?

It's up to Harry Starke to Figure it out

The call came on a Tuesday evening in the middle of August at around nine-thirty. It was from an old school friend that Harry Starke hadn't heard from in almost five years, and he hadn't thought about him in almost as long. Tom Sattler wanted to meet with Harry urgently, and it wouldn't wait until morning. When Harry arrived at Sattler's luxury home less than an hour later, he found him dead, lying in a pool of blood, a single gunshot wound to the head, and .22 revolver lying close to his hand.

Suicide? If he was going to do that, why the hell did he call me?

The search for an answer to that question starts Harry on wide ranging investigation that involves murder, corruption, organized crime, and, deception.

Two For The Money (The Harry Starke Novels Book 2), by Blair Howard

Review 5 Stars:Harry is a fascinating character. He is witty, charming, dedicated and intuitive. He is a real womanizer, a man women find irresistible. He is no angel, which leads him into some very awkward situations. Two for the Money is a fascinating mystery of murder and financial intrigue, laced with clever deductions, some luck, dangerous situations, woven through with light humor. Once again Blair Howard has presented us with another captivating mystery. Seemingly insignificant details... weaving them into a colorful tapestry, throwing in some twists and turns, giggles and heart stopping moments, all leading to an interesting conclusion. The characters are easy to relate to, very human and likable, with flaws and all, which makes the reading all the more interesting. Blair Howard has an easy, realistic writing style, which makes the characters come alive on the pages. I look forward to further novels in this series! Carol Coetzee for Readers' Favorite5 StarsTwo for the Money by Blair Howard is a thrilling read from start to finish. From the very first page, the story takes off and runs and it doesn't stop. This is an action all the way book with a steady pace that picks up speed as the story unfolds. The tension mounts until it reaches boiling point and, although there are plenty of clues along the way, the real culprit will come as a surprise to most readers. I thought this had an exceptional plot, and the characters developed nicely... Excellent work, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Reviewed by Anne-Marie Reynolds for Readers' Favorite

From the Author NO CLIFFHANGER. Two for the Money is the second book in the Harry Starke series. It's a fully stand-alone story. You do not need to read the previous novel, Harry Starke, to enjoy this one. The Harry Starke novels are "who-done-its," and each one has its own conclusion and solution - no cliffhangers.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Mystery, intrigue, deceit and so much more!!! By Steph Destiny Two for the Money is the sequel of the Harry Starke novels. Nevertheless, if you had not read the first book, don’t worry, it can be written as a standalone. If you are a fan of mystery and confident detectives with witty-sarcastic attitudes and Sherlock Holme’s complex, you will love this book.Once again, Mr. Harry Starke is at the wrong place at the wrong time. Late at night, he gets a call from an old classmate, someone that he barely had contact with after five years, Tom Sattler. Desperate, Tom begs Mr. Starke to meet him at his home because he needs his help. He says he is in trouble, but wouldn’t tell over the phone. If only Harry had arrived at 10:30 like he said, if only Tom had called earlier or being more careful until Harry arrived. When our detective, magnet of homicide cases, arrives at Tom’s house there he sees his old classmate in a pool of blood. Starke knows there is something wrong, there is no way Tom would call just to make him a witness of his suicide. Therefore, why does it look like that is exactly the case?Mr. Starke once again immerse himself in a net of deceit, intrigue, betrayal, greed and a family feud that is much more complicated that it seems. I confess, once again, that I tried to solve the mystery along with our hero and, unfortunately, he beat me to it! I was really impressed by the way he conducted himself. He is an intelligent and perceptive man with an attitude. He has different sides but there is no way he will let you take him for a fool. I loved the way he interacted with the reporter, Amanda, he was such a jerk to make her stay away from him so he wouldn’t be fooled but it was also funny how he remained a gentleman-guarded man when she play pretty-coquettish-funny gal to get the information she wanted.Mr. Starke always seems to be surrounded by lovely ladies. Some dangerous and others much more dangerous, in different areas though. Amanda screams predator all over, our lovely senator from the last book doesn’t seem like the support and understanding our guy needs at the end of a very long day, and Kate should be past history but… is she? Now, enter the Statter’s ex-wife, Gloria, and daughter, Stephanie. Both beautiful, one cougar that is not trying that hard to hide it while the other is gorgeous but too elegant and refined for her your age. This two seems to mentally change their age in some aspects and, even though there is some anger and resentment between them, there is something that they are hiding, that is uniting them. The question is: is that secret related to Tom Statter’s death?I felt pretty sorry for Tom when I saw such a big list of suspects: The ex, the boy toy of the ex, his eldest, some people he screw over to gain or maintain his health, etc. Damn, not even the youngest, who was not even eleven yet, was spared from the list. The second Mr. Starke met the ex, the idea that she did it pop into my head. The woman left the guy with almost nothing all of a sudden and now has a boy-toy fiancée that is barely older than her eldest daughter. Who wouldn’t think that she wanted more money for her daughters, which meant that she will get a huge sum, at the very least, for the little Julie and Nicola that are far from being legal? Nevertheless, if the answer was so simple there would be no story, right? Once again, as soon as I thought I had solved the mystery, our loved author introduces a plot I never saw coming.I loved how Mr. Starke thought about the situation and made deductions. He was the perfect modern Sherlock! I can’t wait to tag along our witty-intuitive detective in his next case. This time, I am so going to solve it before him.5 starsReviewer for Paranormal Romance and Authors That Rock

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Look no further. Here is the very best who dunnit book, right here. By C M Anderson Whenever you pick up a Blair Howard book, you can count on it being one of the very best. You may not know why until you start reading it. This book, second in the Harry Starke detective series, is no exception. This is written in the first person, as seen through Starke's eyes. But, I can't help but wonder how much detailed information isn't from Blair Howard's past. Could he have been a cop or p.I. in a prior life? How does he have so much valuable insight into the perps and their motives? And, if you are looking to read the identical book number one all over again, sorry. Although this is second in a series, it makes for one incredible stand alone mystery adventure onto itself.Mr. Howard has a way of going deeper into his characters' minds than most authors. There is a richness that gives even the most hardened criminals a touch of real humanity; even if the world would be better off without the likes of Sal Deluca or his goon, Gino, in it. Harry may be one tough hombre himself, but his softer side shows through. What I truly love most about this series is that no matter how hard you try, you never see who actually dunnit until it is finally revealed to you at the very end. The characters are each very well written, and even their often times bizarre body language still does not give it away. Another encore, please, Mr. Howard. This is one series worth singing accolades about. This book absolutely does not disappoint.I was given a free copy of this book in order to read and give my honest review.

I won't say, except that it caught me by surprise. There were hints along the way, too, which makes it kind of a bummer. I can usually figure out the ending!Well written. Interesting characters, most of them well developed. The author is familiar with his setting, and it shows.I'm looking forward to the third book in the series.Disclaimer: I got the book as a gift, through Amazon. That said, I wouldn't give a book five stars unless I thought it deserved it. My reviews, like my books, are published under my own name, which makes me extra careful.
