USA TODAY BESTSELLER • In this adrenaline-laced novel of suspense from Tom Savage—hailed by Michael Connelly as “a master of the high-speed thriller”—an American actress in Europe races to find the truth behind her husband’s mysterious accident. What she uncovers makes her the target of a shocking conspiracy. Nora Baron’s life is perfect. She lives on Long Island Sound, teaches acting at a local university, and has a loving family. Then one phone call changes everything. She’s informed that her husband, Jeff, has died in a car crash while on a business trip in England. Nora flies to London to identify the body, which the police have listed as a “John Doe.” When she leaves the morgue, a man tries to steal her purse containing Jeff’s personal effects. Clearly, all is not as it seems. At her hotel, Nora receives a cryptic message that leaves her with more questions than answers. She follows the message’s instructions to France, where a fatal encounter transforms her into a fugitive. Wanted for murder, on the run in a shadowy landscape of lies, secrets, and sudden violence, Mrs. “John Doe” must play the role of a lifetime to stay one step ahead of a ruthless enemy with deadly plans for her—and for the world.Praise for Mrs. John Doe “This is a rare spy thriller, smart, beautifully written, and stay-up-all-night enjoyable!”—Gayle Lynds, New York Times bestselling author of The Assassins “It isn’t easy to blindside a fellow suspense author, but Tom Savage manages to fool me every time. A clever, compelling, and cinematic page-turner in which nothing is as it seems, Mrs. John Doe opens with a twist I didn’t see coming and closes with a satisfying bang. This longtime Savage fan ranks Mrs. John Doe right up there with Precipice.”—Wendy Corsi Staub, New York Times bestselling author of The Black Widow “Tom Savage’s Mrs. John Doe races a fictional path somewhere between Alfred Hitchcock and Agatha Christie, a modern heroine-on-the-run spy thriller dealing with some of our time’s deadliest challenges.”—James Grady, New York Times bestselling author of Last Days of the Condor“Savage twists the plot in two startling ways, and Nora’s transformation from wealthy home-focused wife to clever investigator holds up brilliantly. . . . I enjoyed each page, gasped at the swift twists, and came away with a hunger for more of the same, whether it be thrills, France, or books by Tom Savage.”—Kingdom Books“If you like books that make your pulse pound, where the images conjured up by your mind while reading are better than the best ‘action’ movie, Mrs. John Doe should be on your shelf.”—Back Porchervations “Cloak-and-dagger suspense, dark, shadowy figures, secret agents, and a diabolical terrorist plot that must be thwarted combine to create . . . a shocking, heart-pounding, unrelenting thrill ride.”—The Book Reviews Praise for Tom Savage “Savage knows the mystery novel inside and out, and it shows on every page.”—James Patterson “A master of the high-speed thriller.”—Michael Connelly “A very gifted writer who creates living, breathing characters, wonderful dialogue, and mesmerizing tension.”—Nelson DeMille “Savage writes with fierce energy, piercing holes in the shredding fabric of our society, where no one is safe, no one is free from harm.”—Lorenzo Carcaterra

No one is who he or she seems to be or ends up being. A thoroughly enjoyable read that keeps you guessing all the way to the end. From New York to London to Paris to the French countryside and back again to the explosive conclusion in the English countryside, the action does not stop even for one page.Thank you NetGalley, the publisher and the author for the opportunity to preview MRS JOHN DOE.

I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.'Tis strange- but true;for truth is always strange;Stranger than fiction.Tom Savage is a master at hurling unforeseen plot twist at you, so it didn't surprise me at all that he opted to write a spy novel. Tom's writing style is absolutely perfect for this type of suspense thriller.Nora is happily married with a college aged daughter, and a satisfying career as an actress and teacher. But, the charmed life she is living comes to a crashing halt when she receives word her beloved husband, Jeff, has been killed in a car accident while on a business trip to London.Arriving in London, Nora, finds her husband has been listed as a“John Doe” and she must identify his remains. After this awful task is completed, Nora is attacked by a purse snatcher who apparently wants to steal Jeff's personal effects, a single act that thrust Nora into the role of a lifetime. All the world's a stage...Cloak and dagger suspense, dark, shadowy figures, secret agents, and a diabolical terrorist plot that must be thwarted, combines to create a non-stop thrill ride. Fasten your safety belts folks and get ready for a shocking, heart pounding, unrelenting thrill ride.I loved Nora's character because she is so cool under pressure, she thinks on her feet, doesn't give in to hysteria, stays focused, and never gives up no matter what, not only to prevent a terrorist attack, but to find out what happened to Jeff.LADY MCDUFF:I have done no harm. But I remember now I am in this earthly world, where to do harm Is often laudable, to do good sometime Accounted dangerous folly. Why then, alas, Do I put up that womanly defense, To say I have done no harm?ENTER MURDERERS:'What are these faces?”FIRST MURDERER Where is your husband?LADY MCDUFF:I hope, in no place so unsanctified Where such as thou mayst find him.Nora is pretty much a one woman show here as she must make split decisions about who to confide in, who to trust, and of course stay alive in the process. She takes on several roles and sometimes gets things right, but sometimes she finds herself in a real pickle.Reading this story is a lot like riding a roller coaster. The car starts off at a steady pace, climbs steep inclines, speeds up, takes hairpin twist and turns, then makes sudden drops that will take your breath away. From the first page to the last, I held on for dear life, enthralled and riveted, cheering on Mrs. John Doe, every step of the way.Taut, cleverly plotted, action packed, and tightly woven, you won't be able to put this book down, I guarantee it.I must confess to a few things right up front. I am a very big fan of this author, and have been sitting on pins and needles waiting for this book. Tom's trademark plot twist , despite my jadedness, never fails to surprise me, always taking me completely off guard. If you can trick me, then you will have made a fan for life.Despite my loyalty to the author, I did approach this book with a small amount of trepidation because in all honesty, spies and espionage novels are not really my cuppa, for several reasons. But, my concerns were quickly laid to rest, as there was nothing slow or plodding, or too understated about about this book, and I found the attention to detail and the pacing to be right up my alley. If you like fast paced, psychological twinged thrillers, packed with taut suspense and action, then you will not want to miss this one! 5 stars!

Point of view as seen mostly through the wife enables the reader to follow the story without difficulty. From the perfect title to the call that her husband of more than twenty years, (working in England that week) did not survive an accident, to the finale, readers are intellectually and emotionally absorbed. As the mystery evolved, I identified strongly with her concerns and struggles, attempting to discern who could be trusted and ever more desperate to know what really happened to him and why. This is a well written novel of the mystery/suspense genre without the current prerequisites of graphic sexual scenes and/or overwhelming crass language, yet an all the more entertaining whodunit for a wider audience despite that exclusion. There is unsurprisingly some violence but never the nightmarish variety, and the final chapter suggests that revenge, if not sweet, appears justifiably all but unrepented. Thanks to Netgalley and Random House/Alibi for the opportunity or reading this very entertaining ARC. Any opinions expressed in this review are freely provided and solely my own.

More cozy comedy! More murders!

Summertime, and the living is umm--not as easy as Mina had hoped. But, she finally has a full-time job, working alongside her new boyfriend, Jack (that is, Chef Jacque, when they’re at Squirrel Run Acres.) That’s good, right? Except that poor Mina and Jack have been working together a lot lately--specifically fourteen hour shifts in a sizzling kitchen--for months.

When tempers flare hotter than fat on a fire, Jack steps up and splurges for a romantic get-away to Cape May Point, New Jersey. All is forgiven and soon Sunset Beach winks from the distance, until Mina’s stuck with dog sitting duties for Jim, her buddy Bauser’s three-legged dog. Complicating the canine conundrum is Bauser’s last minute plea to deliver Jim to a client location, in Bumville, New Jersey. No biggie, except that Bumville lies in the polar opposite direction from Cape May. And Vito and Miriam also happen to be visiting the client--who is none other than Vito’s niece, Helena Pryzchntchynzski. Oy.

Further jeopardizing their journey through Jersey is Jim’s discovery of Babette Bernstein. Her murder launches a connect-the-dots of corpses that ripples dangerously around Mina and Jack. Oh--and the kidnappings, plural--are a little scary, too.

Will Mina and Jack escape the bad guys? Will they survive their first vacation together? More importantly, will they finally have one?

If you're in the mood for funny fiction, a cast of chatty pets, and unsolved murders--read on. Juicy Jersey packs a roller coaster ride of murders, mayhem and mojitos. Come root for Mina, boo the bad guys and nibble a nosh, courtesy of the author’s recipes in the back of the book, vetted by Lund’s real-life favorite chef, her husband, Chef Andrew.

By Helen Callahan With the utmost respect, I wonder if Mina (like the bird) could bea, slightly older, distant relative of Stephanie Plum. The humoris non stop. The twists and turns of Lizz Lund's suspense areOutstanding, Ingenious, and completely Unguessable. The maincharacter, Mina Kitchen with her family and friends is a wonder-ful mix of Jersey and PA. Juicy Jersey is book # 5 in a must readseries. The characters and storyline have a growing relationshipwith the reader from book to book. Each book could be read asa stand alone....BUT, READ THE SERIES. Hurry so you will beready for book # 6. I am.

Mina has a kitchen addiction, right? So, ok, she and Chef went on vacation. Okay. Still. There are no lions or bears, but still, oh my. Cute story, truly. I love these characters to bits. Not Vinnie bits, but anyway. If you don't understand the Vinnie reference, you shouldn't read this book until you've read others in the series. Can't wait til the next one. Only I read #5 before #4, so I'm still good. Read, enjoy. Recipes are keepers, even if they feed a modest gathering.

“I think,” said Palk slowly, “there’s a homicidal maniac loose in the Hydro, but who it is, God knows.”

Presteignton Hydro is a drably genteel spa resort, populated by the aged and crippled who relish every drop of scandal they observe or imagine concerning the younger guests. No one however expects to see gossip turn to murder as their juniors die one by one – no one, that is, except the killer. The crusty cast of characters make solving the case all the harder for Inspector Palk – until the enigmatic sleuth Mr. Winkley arrives to lend a hand.

Knock, Murderer, Knock! was Harriet Rutland’s sparkling debut mystery novel, first published in 1938. This edition, the first in over seventy years, features a new introduction by crime fiction historian Curtis Evans.

‘Very well written, intelligent story of triple murder... acid characterization’ Kirkus Reviews

Knock, Murderer, Knock!, by Harriet Rutland

About the Author Harriet Rutland was the pen-name of Olive Shimwell. She was born Olive Seers in 1901, the daughter of a prosperous Birmingham builder and decorator. Little is known of the author's early life but in 1926 she married microbiologist John Shimwell, with whom she moved to a small village near Cork in Ireland. This setting, transplanted to Devon, inspired her first mystery novel Knock, Murderer, Knock! which was published in 1938. The second of Harriet Rutland's mysteries, Bleeding Hooks, came out in 1940, and the third and last, Blue Murder, was published in November 1942. All three novels are remarkable for their black comedy, innovative plots, and pin-sharp portraits of human behaviour, especially concerning relationships between men and women. Olive and John were divorced in the early forties, and Olive apparently did not publish anything further. She died in Newton Abbot in 1962.

The author writes with an acidic tongue and paints a wonderfully funny portrait of her quirky characters. The murder occurs in a closed community: a hydro spa, and it's fun learning about just what a hydro spa was. In the beginning, I had to use the search function on my kindle to keep track of just who each character was. Once we met all the characters in depth, they were easily distinguishable due to the author's skill. The strength of the book is the characters and how they are drawn but this is a classic mystery with competent plotting and all clues presented. A totally enjoyable read.I recommend reading the modern introduction after you finish the mystery. He doesn't spoil the mystery but it's more fun to discover the characters and their quirks on your own.

Fine Reissue of a Forgotten Book By drkhimxz Well done reissue of a rather long forgotten mystery from a series of similar works newly offered for the Kindle. At a buck it is well worth reading.Originally published in the 1930's, it is as up-to-date as the latest tale of Manor-house murders, this time an establishment for those who want to combine a place to stay with health management. The setting is quite appropriately English, the style similar to that of the more acute of the British Grand Mistresses of the genre. The book begins with a sharply rendered portrait of the inhabitants of the establishment and moves quite early on to the murder of a patron in a most unusual way. Enter the British Constabulary whose representatives are drawn with a sharp but not unfriendly pen, They include officers of varied background and skills, resembling, in that respect, a combination familiar to readers of the genre. Well written, by one with insight into the vagaries of character and peculiarities of the (mostly) elderly, the book is a welcome revival, which should appeal to those with a taste for the less boisterous and sexually explicit sort of mystery.

By Bradley Friedman The good news is that, based on reading only the first of her novels, I would say that Harriet Rutland is a marvelous mystery writer, every bit as clever and fun as Christianna Brand or Marjorie Allingham, more clever than Ngaio Marsh or Dorothy Sayers, and capable of both incredible humor and great poignancy. The bad news? She only wrote three books. What is a boy to do??? I have purchased the other two, but do I space them out over a number of years, or do I gobble them down now and grieve afterward? I will forever wonder how someone as good as Rutland could stop after her third effort, but, as mystery scholar Curtis Evans states in his excellent introduction to the novel, there isn’t a lot known about the author.Knock, Murderer, Knock begins thusly: “Mrs. Napier walked slowly to the middle of the terrace, noted the oncoming car, looked round to make sure that she was fully observed, crossed her legs deliberately, and fell heavily on to the red gravel drive."It turns out that Mrs. Napier likes to fall down a lot – and do some other odd things – to garner attention as one of the oldest residents at the Presteignton Hydro, a spa and hotel set on a cliff in Devonshire Bay. The place is crammed with eccentrics, most of them women, who take treatments from the handsome owner, Dr. Williams, and spend the rest of their time gossiping viciously about each other. There are over twenty characters to keep track of at the Hydro, and an early review I read somewhere criticized the enormous size of the cast. But honestly, these characters are gold, and aside from mining an enormous amount of humor from their antics, Rutland manages to delineate one from the other and juggle their places in the mystery so well that I could tell them all apart just fine, thank you.As a plotter, Rutland does a splendid job of surprising me again and again – in her choice of victims and in the secrets her characters have kept hidden - so I really don’t want to give much of the story away. Suffice it to say that a murderer strikes at Presteignton Hydro, and it is up to Inspector Pawk and Sergeant Jago to find the killer. And when the police don’t seem capable of success, a new guest named Mr. Winkley shows up, whose interest in the case may be that of an amateur sleuth, or it may be something else.Rutland’s prose is sparkling, and the dialogue is so good that, for once, I did not find myself tiring of the inclusion of multiple interviews of the suspects; each one was a comic gem. The interviews are made even more fun as Rutland shares Inspector Pawk’s interior opinions of these people: his attraction toward the Doctor’s secretary, or his antipathy toward Mrs. Dawson, the mystery novelist, just because she is a lady writer who has no qualms about pointing out the mistakes Pawk has made on the case. At first, it seems that Mrs. Dawson will be a figure of fun, but as the case progresses, she becomes more and more important to the story. This happens with a number of characters who pass back and forth from minor to major status. Nobody can be taken for granted during this investigation.Despite the prevalence of effective humor throughout the book, Rutland is not averse to depicting the horror and sadness of murder, particularly in her choice of victims, or the loneliness of those of middle age and above who find themselves living alone. The spa residents alternately like and loathe each other, partly out of a sense of frustration at their own lives, and out of a need for something to do. They band together when necessary, and they attack each other without much provocation. They are odd and eccentric and yet seemed incredibly realistic to me, and I loved each and every one of them.Rutland’s novel doesn’t contain the depth of surprise that a Christie novel might, but she reminded me of Dame Agatha in many ways, particularly in her fine depiction of spinsters and servants, and in the nice way she lay scene after scene before us, telling us a little more each time about her characters even as she laid a new twist in the story before us. I can only imagine how famous Harriet Rutland might have become if only she had dedicated more of her life to her writing. Dare I say it, I think she would have usurped other ladies as one of the Queens of Crime. (There, I said it!) As it is, I have only Bleeding Hooks and Blue Murder to look forward to. I shall probably read them very quickly, but I will savor them, and I will let you know what I thought when I’m done.

Raleigh Harmon just won a coveted science contest, with the chance to compete for a $50,000 college scholarship. Great news, right? Only her goofy aunt drives her to the contest held on Ocracoke Island, North Carolina, and as soon as they arrive, Raleigh realizes she’s way out of her league. The competitors are ruthless brainiacs, and she doesn’t have the slightest clue how to solve this new science challenge. That suddenly changes when one of her competitors is targeted in a near-death attack—and Raleigh looks like a suspect. After getting involuntarily partnered with a teen marine biologist, Raleigh’s got forty-eight hours to solve the science riddle. But can she also pick out the bad guy—or girl—before they escape the island? And what if the bad guy is the boy she really likes? Stone and Sand is the third book in the Raleigh Harmon mystery series introducing the girl who will become a forensic geologist and FBI agent—provided she survives her high school years.

She's an amazing character, and the supporting characters are just as real. I have to read the books in one night, and this one was no exception. I was guessing until the end - and I cared about what happened (a sign of a truly well-written book, in my opinion.).

Stone and Sand By Nicole Petrino-Salter In Book Three of the prequels to the Raleigh Harmon Mystery Series (which features the adult FBI Special Agent Raleigh Harmon) we see Raleigh at almost 16 years old headed out with her weird Aunt Charlotte in her aunt's ancient Volvo to participate in a billionaire's science contest with four other contestants on Ocracoke Island. And although these are labeled YA, they're clearly up to the reading standards of adults who love the writing and stories of Sibella Giorello. The last one to arrive at the contest gathering, due to the breakdown of the old Volvo and rescue from the ferry by the billionaire himself (Bill Brogan), Raleigh's vulnerability and insecurity amp up, her belief that her best friend Drew should be the one present here, but since Drew's experience depicted in Stone and Spark, the first prequel, Drew has become even more of a genius recluse.Disrupting the contest, one of the contestants is taken to the hospital. Brogan decides the remaining four must work as two teams, two guys and two gals, to determine the scientific answer to his proposed question about the island dune grasses offering to double the prize.Nothing fires up Raleigh's inquisitive nature like an unsolved puzzle involving geology, her specialty. So many questions arise about the sand Raleigh found in one location taking her focus away from answering the question about the dune grasses. Her partner, another quirky genius, seems to be onto an answer concerning the grasses, but Raleigh pursues her questions about the sand she discovered.Complicating all of it is one of the other contestants' blue eyes and easy drawl. "Tex" (aka Marcus) is smooth and charming but also kind and troubled, and Raleigh is drawn to him in spite of herself, even after seeing him where he doesn't figure to be.Sibella's writing is compelling, her characterizations superb, the dialogue fully engaging, and the story fascinating. If you have no interest in geology and can't muster any, this might not be the novel for you because there is plenty of technical information about minerals. I found it informative and necessary to the story, but some might not think so.Stone and Sand offers the usual Giorello intrigue mixed with insightful revelations from a young Raleigh who's growing up with a mentally ill mother, an agoraphobic OCD best friend, a new-age aunt, and the emotional experience of meeting a young man who hides his sorrows in his blue, blue eyes. There are profound moments in this story of young brilliance, conniving greed, supernatural poppycock, and serious science. The end brought real tears.Raleigh's faith stays inherent in her character but is understated throughout the story.Highly recommend this series from prequels and beyond.

Sibella answered my question with the simultaneous release of "Stone & Sand." This is the more I could want.I've enjoyed Richmond VA's setting for the previous books in this series; however, I found this story's change of venue to North Carolina's outer-bank islands really refreshing. Raleigh has been selected to compete in a science contest to discover why a vial part of the island's fragile ecosystem is dying, all for the challenge and the chance to win $50,000 in scholarship money. She meets her four rivals the first day on the island and, in her inimitable style, makes an awkward first impression on them and the billionaire sponsor of the contest. Convinced she's poisoned any chances of winning, she nonetheless presses on to do her best--also in her inimitable style. When one of the contestants is mysteriously assaulted and must withdraw from the event, the remaining four are paired up and the purse doubled. Their scientific acumen (Raleigh's geology and her partner, Lanette's, biology) mesh almost as perfectly as do their dry wits. (Sibella Giorello's skill at writing dialog has always been drool-worthy, but I've never laughed out loud this much in her previous books.) Twists abound, with few of the characters being who they actually seem to be at the start. Do Raleigh and Lanette win? I'd really like to tell you, but......I will say that who really wins is you, the reader. "Stone & Sand" has all the essential elements (specific weights and all) that you've come to expect from a Giorello novel: mystery, intrigue, humor, pathos--and that ever-present healthy dose of science that doesn't beat up the brain, but brings it to its appreciative feet. When you reluctantly turn the final page of a novel that leaves you not just more entertained, but smarter than you were on page one, you just know the precious hours--hours of your life you'll never get back--were oh-so-well spent. So okay, here's the obligatory "greatly recommended." As if you hadn't already figured that out...

Books 5-7 were much improved, I enjoyed 7 very much. This book did not compare. Extremely short, the time line seemed off, first Marilyn was very sick with the flu, next she was back to baking her pies, then the old boyfriend of Tiara returns, and I don't remember any previous mention if him. Then Tim, the odd neighbor does something horrible, even if it was in order to save Tiara, and gets arrested but then let go??!!Too unbelievable, unfortunately I'm done with this series.

Memories are dangerous. Investigative reporter Wendy Watanabe is no stranger to mysteries, but can she handle one steeped in her own family’s history? A box of letters from a WWII soldier stationed on the Big Island is found at the Hilo Historical Society and unlocks painful memories for Wendy’s Great Aunt Bee. Bee’s older sister was swept away in the 1946 tsunami, but now Wendy suspects she was murdered first. As she delves into the mystery, Wendy meets a group of nonagenarians who were at the USO center on Coconut Island during the war. One is a hero. Another is a cold-blooded murderer. When the threat turns to Bee, Wendy seeks the aid of Detective Leilani Texeira and together, the women race to catch the killer before he claims another life.

The Lei Crime Series: Coconut Island (Kindle Worlds Novella), by J.L. Oakley

From the Author There are two background pieces to Coconut Island.1) When I lived on the Big Island back in the 1970s, I always wondered why the little town of Hilo was built so far back from the bay.  Tsunami, I was told. Tide wave. Then a student of mine in adult education told her story of how she survived a terrible time when there was only "this much air at the top of my bedroom and the wave tore apart the building. I lost many schoolmates." This image has stayed with me all these years. 2) I got married in Liliuokalani Park next to Coconut Island where we went to swim. when my husband's uncle arrived from WA State, he wanted to go see the island where there was a club. It had been wiped out by the tsunami of 1946.  Said there were lights going over the bridge. Through research, I identified the place as a USA center, Mokuloa. Writing Coconut Island has given me a chance to explore family history of my time there as well as an important event in the lives of the people of Hilo. I hope that I have honored the survivors of the April Fool's Day tsunami of 1946 as well as those who were lost.

While so many Kindle World novellas are very interesting, this book truly could stand on its own. It is tightly plotted, suspenseful, and the character development is excellent. We get to learn more about Wendy Watanabe, media journalist and the occasional nemesis of Lei in the Toby Neal novels. But, this book is about so much more than just the characters. The author is a historian and that shines through in the best way in this book. Through a natural disaster of epic proportions, we come to understand a great deal about island history. This is a really good book; a textured and sensitive read. I recommend it highly.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. History, Mystery and One Big Tsunami! By Kimmy's Korner Coconut Island is a wonderful blend of Whodunnit and Hilo History packaged in the wrapping of the Lei Crime Series Kindle World and topped with an Award-Winning Author bow.Wendy Watanabe is an investigative journalist with a Honolulu TV station and when her Aunt Bee's quiet life in Hilo is disrupted by the discovery of mysterious letters, photos and a corpse, Wendy sets to work. With the help of Lei Texeira, of the Lei Crime Series, the mystery is unraveled to reveal a shocking conclusion. One thing I loved about this book was the description of the 1946 tsunami that destroyed much of Hilo, Hawaii. Oakley knows her stuff and peppers the story with historical facts that are absolutely fascinating and horrifying. There is just enough Hawaiiana in the book to make me want to book at ticket to the islands and just enough mystery to make me think of how cleverly the whole thing came together in the end.If you like mysteries, Hawaii, history, or WWII stories, this will fascinate you! Not necessary to read Lei Crime books to enjoy this.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Intrigue and Historical Events Make This Novella Superb. By F. M. Pepoon I love the Lei Crime Kindle World novellas, and found Coconut Island to be an intriguing and interesting addition to the series. This novella tells a story about an old nemesis of Lei's, Wendy Watanabe. In the Lei Crime Series, Wendy has been a thorn in Lei's side, coming across as a rather abrasive and intractable reporter. In Coconut Island, we learn much more of Wendy's story and she is given a depth of character that makes her fascinating. I hope to learn more about Wendy and see more of her in the future Lei Crime novels. As with many of the other novellas in this Kindle World, we also see different sides of the protagonists from the Lei Crime Series, a different take on their personalities by J.L. Oakley. I happen to love this aspect of the Kindle World, that we see Toby Neal's characters from other writers' perspectives, even when (or perhaps especially when) their vision differs from mine. What I loved most about this story was the focus on historical events that changed the people of Hawai'i forever. In particular, this novella focuses on the 1946 tsunami that hit the Big Island with such force that there was massive property destruction and loss of many lives. I knew nothing of that tsunami, and after reading the novella did some research and found that J.L. Oakley portrayed the events accurately and sympathetically. Coconut Island also tells the history of its namesake, a former USO location during World War II. Tying these events into a modern-day story made for a rich, evocative novella that I found to be delightful.
