The Devil in Canaan Parish is a southern gothic suspense novel set in south Louisiana in 1957. It tells the story of Bram and Sally Palmer, a middle class couple trying to keep apace with Sally's wealthy relatives, the Landrys, who own most of Canaan Parish. One night in late July, a tropical storm hits the small town of Techeville. Ira Meyer's jewelry shop is robbed and a stranger, Melee Mouton, arrives. The young Cajun girl goes to work as a maid for the Palmers, and quickly becomes a prisoner in the couple's bitter, covetous household. Soon an evil presence begins to haunt Melee, Bram and Sally, and the local sheriff gets involved to try to rid Canaan Parish of the devil that has taken up residence. Called a "suspenseful, mysterious, roller-coaster thrill ride," The Devil in Canaan Parish explores life in post World War II south Louisiana. Author Jackie Shemwell weaves traditional Cajun folklore into a page-turning drama that explores themes of desire, corruption and the evil that dwells in the human heart.

By The Bohemian Housewife My Review:I was pretty excited to read this book. The reviews looked great, and the storyline sounded fresh. I am changing up my review style a bit; I'm shamelessly stealing it from Anita from Iloves2read. There are some things I need to explain about my rating. What I liked:I loved where the story was set. The Devil in Canaan Parish is set in south Louisiana in 1957. I think the author did a good job setting it in that period. She made the characters pretty realistic. I was happy she didn't hide the racism that was felt in that time. I've read a few books that leave it out. Jackie Shemwell's writing style is very easy to follow; she doesn't leave a thing out. Her story was clearly painted in my mind. The ending wasn't something I expected. I don't want to give away any of the story, but rarely have I seen an ending like this. What I didn't Like:I felt the author included a bit too much back story. A lot of the backstory wasn't needed in my opinion. She could have cut some of it to make the story more to the point. The story didn't really start until the last 60ish pages. For having so much backstory, the ending felt a bit rushed.Final Thoughts:The Devil in Canaan Parish was a bit slow at first, but it was an okay read. I would read other books by the author just to get a second opinion of her work. It had it's pros/cons, as I listed above.I received this book from the author for an honest review.
7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Excellent debut novel! By Bobby An excellent debut novel, well written & never dragging. Descriptions & character development made me feel like I was there & knew everyone involved. I look forward to reading more of the author's works. There were some editing mistakes that caused me to briefly pause, so my only suggestion is for the author to continue writing in this wonderful style, but have it professionally edited. I definitely recommend this hard-to-put-down book.
