The Devil in Canaan Parish is a southern gothic suspense novel set in south Louisiana in 1957. It tells the story of Bram and Sally Palmer, a middle class couple trying to keep apace with Sally's wealthy relatives, the Landrys, who own most of Canaan Parish. One night in late July, a tropical storm hits the small town of Techeville. Ira Meyer's jewelry shop is robbed and a stranger, Melee Mouton, arrives. The young Cajun girl goes to work as a maid for the Palmers, and quickly becomes a prisoner in the couple's bitter, covetous household. Soon an evil presence begins to haunt Melee, Bram and Sally, and the local sheriff gets involved to try to rid Canaan Parish of the devil that has taken up residence. Called a "suspenseful, mysterious, roller-coaster thrill ride," The Devil in Canaan Parish explores life in post World War II south Louisiana. Author Jackie Shemwell weaves traditional Cajun folklore into a page-turning drama that explores themes of desire, corruption and the evil that dwells in the human heart.

By The Bohemian Housewife My Review:I was pretty excited to read this book. The reviews looked great, and the storyline sounded fresh. I am changing up my review style a bit; I'm shamelessly stealing it from Anita from Iloves2read. There are some things I need to explain about my rating. What I liked:I loved where the story was set. The Devil in Canaan Parish is set in south Louisiana in 1957. I think the author did a good job setting it in that period. She made the characters pretty realistic. I was happy she didn't hide the racism that was felt in that time. I've read a few books that leave it out. Jackie Shemwell's writing style is very easy to follow; she doesn't leave a thing out. Her story was clearly painted in my mind. The ending wasn't something I expected. I don't want to give away any of the story, but rarely have I seen an ending like this. What I didn't Like:I felt the author included a bit too much back story. A lot of the backstory wasn't needed in my opinion. She could have cut some of it to make the story more to the point. The story didn't really start until the last 60ish pages. For having so much backstory, the ending felt a bit rushed.Final Thoughts:The Devil in Canaan Parish was a bit slow at first, but it was an okay read. I would read other books by the author just to get a second opinion of her work. It had it's pros/cons, as I listed above.I received this book from the author for an honest review.

Descriptions & character development made me feel like I was there & knew everyone involved. I look forward to reading more of the author's works. There were some editing mistakes that caused me to briefly pause, so my only suggestion is for the author to continue writing in this wonderful style, but have it professionally edited. I definitely recommend this hard-to-put-down book.

It's up to Harry Starke to Figure it out

The call came on a Tuesday evening in the middle of August at around nine-thirty. It was from an old school friend that Harry Starke hadn't heard from in almost five years, and he hadn't thought about him in almost as long. Tom Sattler wanted to meet with Harry urgently, and it wouldn't wait until morning. When Harry arrived at Sattler's luxury home less than an hour later, he found him dead, lying in a pool of blood, a single gunshot wound to the head, and .22 revolver lying close to his hand.

Suicide? If he was going to do that, why the hell did he call me?

The search for an answer to that question starts Harry on wide ranging investigation that involves murder, corruption, organized crime, and, deception.

Two For The Money (The Harry Starke Novels Book 2), by Blair Howard

Review 5 Stars:Harry is a fascinating character. He is witty, charming, dedicated and intuitive. He is a real womanizer, a man women find irresistible. He is no angel, which leads him into some very awkward situations. Two for the Money is a fascinating mystery of murder and financial intrigue, laced with clever deductions, some luck, dangerous situations, woven through with light humor. Once again Blair Howard has presented us with another captivating mystery. Seemingly insignificant details... weaving them into a colorful tapestry, throwing in some twists and turns, giggles and heart stopping moments, all leading to an interesting conclusion. The characters are easy to relate to, very human and likable, with flaws and all, which makes the reading all the more interesting. Blair Howard has an easy, realistic writing style, which makes the characters come alive on the pages. I look forward to further novels in this series! Carol Coetzee for Readers' Favorite5 StarsTwo for the Money by Blair Howard is a thrilling read from start to finish. From the very first page, the story takes off and runs and it doesn't stop. This is an action all the way book with a steady pace that picks up speed as the story unfolds. The tension mounts until it reaches boiling point and, although there are plenty of clues along the way, the real culprit will come as a surprise to most readers. I thought this had an exceptional plot, and the characters developed nicely... Excellent work, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Reviewed by Anne-Marie Reynolds for Readers' Favorite

From the Author NO CLIFFHANGER. Two for the Money is the second book in the Harry Starke series. It's a fully stand-alone story. You do not need to read the previous novel, Harry Starke, to enjoy this one. The Harry Starke novels are "who-done-its," and each one has its own conclusion and solution - no cliffhangers.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Mystery, intrigue, deceit and so much more!!! By Steph Destiny Two for the Money is the sequel of the Harry Starke novels. Nevertheless, if you had not read the first book, don’t worry, it can be written as a standalone. If you are a fan of mystery and confident detectives with witty-sarcastic attitudes and Sherlock Holme’s complex, you will love this book.Once again, Mr. Harry Starke is at the wrong place at the wrong time. Late at night, he gets a call from an old classmate, someone that he barely had contact with after five years, Tom Sattler. Desperate, Tom begs Mr. Starke to meet him at his home because he needs his help. He says he is in trouble, but wouldn’t tell over the phone. If only Harry had arrived at 10:30 like he said, if only Tom had called earlier or being more careful until Harry arrived. When our detective, magnet of homicide cases, arrives at Tom’s house there he sees his old classmate in a pool of blood. Starke knows there is something wrong, there is no way Tom would call just to make him a witness of his suicide. Therefore, why does it look like that is exactly the case?Mr. Starke once again immerse himself in a net of deceit, intrigue, betrayal, greed and a family feud that is much more complicated that it seems. I confess, once again, that I tried to solve the mystery along with our hero and, unfortunately, he beat me to it! I was really impressed by the way he conducted himself. He is an intelligent and perceptive man with an attitude. He has different sides but there is no way he will let you take him for a fool. I loved the way he interacted with the reporter, Amanda, he was such a jerk to make her stay away from him so he wouldn’t be fooled but it was also funny how he remained a gentleman-guarded man when she play pretty-coquettish-funny gal to get the information she wanted.Mr. Starke always seems to be surrounded by lovely ladies. Some dangerous and others much more dangerous, in different areas though. Amanda screams predator all over, our lovely senator from the last book doesn’t seem like the support and understanding our guy needs at the end of a very long day, and Kate should be past history but… is she? Now, enter the Statter’s ex-wife, Gloria, and daughter, Stephanie. Both beautiful, one cougar that is not trying that hard to hide it while the other is gorgeous but too elegant and refined for her your age. This two seems to mentally change their age in some aspects and, even though there is some anger and resentment between them, there is something that they are hiding, that is uniting them. The question is: is that secret related to Tom Statter’s death?I felt pretty sorry for Tom when I saw such a big list of suspects: The ex, the boy toy of the ex, his eldest, some people he screw over to gain or maintain his health, etc. Damn, not even the youngest, who was not even eleven yet, was spared from the list. The second Mr. Starke met the ex, the idea that she did it pop into my head. The woman left the guy with almost nothing all of a sudden and now has a boy-toy fiancée that is barely older than her eldest daughter. Who wouldn’t think that she wanted more money for her daughters, which meant that she will get a huge sum, at the very least, for the little Julie and Nicola that are far from being legal? Nevertheless, if the answer was so simple there would be no story, right? Once again, as soon as I thought I had solved the mystery, our loved author introduces a plot I never saw coming.I loved how Mr. Starke thought about the situation and made deductions. He was the perfect modern Sherlock! I can’t wait to tag along our witty-intuitive detective in his next case. This time, I am so going to solve it before him.5 starsReviewer for Paranormal Romance and Authors That Rock

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Look no further. Here is the very best who dunnit book, right here. By C M Anderson Whenever you pick up a Blair Howard book, you can count on it being one of the very best. You may not know why until you start reading it. This book, second in the Harry Starke detective series, is no exception. This is written in the first person, as seen through Starke's eyes. But, I can't help but wonder how much detailed information isn't from Blair Howard's past. Could he have been a cop or p.I. in a prior life? How does he have so much valuable insight into the perps and their motives? And, if you are looking to read the identical book number one all over again, sorry. Although this is second in a series, it makes for one incredible stand alone mystery adventure onto itself.Mr. Howard has a way of going deeper into his characters' minds than most authors. There is a richness that gives even the most hardened criminals a touch of real humanity; even if the world would be better off without the likes of Sal Deluca or his goon, Gino, in it. Harry may be one tough hombre himself, but his softer side shows through. What I truly love most about this series is that no matter how hard you try, you never see who actually dunnit until it is finally revealed to you at the very end. The characters are each very well written, and even their often times bizarre body language still does not give it away. Another encore, please, Mr. Howard. This is one series worth singing accolades about. This book absolutely does not disappoint.I was given a free copy of this book in order to read and give my honest review.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A; highly recommended. By Jack L. Knapp This one caught my attention and held it from beginning to end. Whodunnit? I won't say, except that it caught me by surprise. There were hints along the way, too, which makes it kind of a bummer. I can usually figure out the ending!Well written. Interesting characters, most of them well developed. The author is familiar with his setting, and it shows.I'm looking forward to the third book in the series.Disclaimer: I got the book as a gift, through Amazon. That said, I wouldn't give a book five stars unless I thought it deserved it. My reviews, like my books, are published under my own name, which makes me extra careful.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Diggs and Solomon: The Early Years By S. Miller I am a huge fan of Jen Blood's writing style and her Diggs and Solomon characters in general. Just like the Erin Solomon Pentalogy; this book did not disappoint at all. Although technically written after the Pentalogy, this is a prequel to the series. As an avid reader, and having already read the Pentalogy, I was really looking forward to visiting Diggs and Solomon in the early years and to get a better feel for the development of their relationship. And to be completely honest, I don't think I'll ever get too much Diggs and Solomon, no matter what time in their lives is being portrayed in the pages of Jen's books. That being said, this could easily be a stand alone book or read before or following the Pentalogy. It starts with action from the beginning and never gives you time to question why you are reading it. The story grabs your attention from the start with a crime scene that the main characters stumble upon. Leading from there, as investigative reporters, it is their mission to "solve" the crime, but they get drawn into other aspects of the story that they weren't expecting. This story has just enough twists and turns to keep you guessing without being confusing. I typically am able to figure out who the bad guy is way before an author reveals it, but I was shocked when this bad guy was uncovered. I truly did not see that one coming! Lots of mystery with just enough romance. I love the dynamic between Diggs and Solomon.Bravo Ms. Blood!! Another winner in my opinion!!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Another Fun Read from Jen Blood! By Alanna1231 Honestly, Jen Blood could creatively write my grocery list and I'd still give it 5 stars and rave about it; she's just one of those authors who you just KNOW their book is going to be amazing based on previous works. Midnight Lullaby is no exception. It was such a fun experience to visit Diggs and Erin in the early stages of their partnership (and not-so-platonic partnership) and still witness the same type of chemistry portrayed in the Erin Solomon Pentology.Right from the start - after Diggs and Erin stumble across the body of a female who was obviously staged and posed - the action and story sucks you in and engulfs all your senses while reading. Hints of things to come in the next 5, already released, books make me want to begin a re-read to pick up on those subtle plot lines. In short, Diggs and Erin will always been among my Top 5 Favorite Couples and Midnight Lullaby reminded me how amazing these characters are, and Blood's ability to weave an amazing tale with them. I can't wait to see what this author has in store for the future.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I LOVE a mystery that makes me keep switching my who dunnit guesses! By lilmerm8 Jen Blood does it again! This book was thought provoking, chilling, thrilling, and I can't get enough of the Solomon & Diggs duo. It was great to see them in action earlier in their careers when their on again off again romance sparked. The characters were well developed and the plot never lags! I can't wait for more books by this author! Check out her other Erin Solomon Mysteries if you haven't done so already!

The characters are childishly unbelievable, they bounce back and forth from brave to afraid. The best friend is wild the mother is over the top and the grandma is crazy singing while a guy dies. The police officer likes her, but accuses her as if he knows she did it. She catches her enemy at her back door and the cops didn't even investigate it. Then, she breaks into her enemy's shop, finds a notice from the dead inspector about being shut down, and rat poison in the corner. Lastly, her friend the cop arrests her when he finds her with the poison in her hand. The plot is strange and it just really feels like a swing and a miss.

A stand-alone novella featuring the same characters as Rachel Abbott’s bestselling novel Stranger Child Someone is looking for Tasha. But does she want to be found? Eight months ago Tasha Joseph ran away, and her stepmother, Emma, has been searching for her ever since. She is desperate to give Tasha the home and security she deserves. The problem is, Emma isn’t the only one looking for Tasha. The police are keen to find her too. She could be a vital witness in a criminal trial, and DCI Tom Douglas has a team constantly on the lookout for her. But Tasha remains hidden, and nobody appears to have seen her. Suddenly, the stakes are raised. Somebody is offering money – a lot of money – for information about Tasha’s whereabouts. Tom and Emma know they have never been closer to finding the young girl. But they also recognise that she has never been closer to danger. Can they find her first? She can run – but for how long can she hide? Praise for Rachel Abbott’s books “Pure Genius: A Masterclass in the Perfect Thriller!!” – Love Books "Absorbing, complex and brilliantly planned, I loved this book. 10/10." The pace is good, the twists credible and it can easily be read as a stand alone. Enjoy." Crime Thriller Hound "I was left speechless in the first chapter and couldn't put it down for hours. Rachel is amazing at building tension and keeping you turning page after page." Crime Book Club "Stranger Child was the PERFECT thriller. I couldn't get enough of this shocking story." Bookaholic Confessions "Ms. Abbott writes complex and yet very believable thrillers and this book was no exception. You will be on the edge of your seat constantly. 5 stars. A very strong thriller." Books, Reviews, Etc. "Prose is taut, wholly believable locations and a full cast bursting with engaging characters." Crime Fiction Lover "I loved this book! What I loved the most about this book was the plot. There are a few 'curve balls' in this story, which definitely kept me on my toes. I really could not put this down." Debra's Book Cafe "Set against the opposing realities of harsh, crime-ridden gangs and cosy, well-off, Middle-England families, Abbott seamlessly weaves three separate narratives together into one barn-stormer of a thriller. ...a well-rounded, and fulfilling novel, that still manages to keep you guessing right to the very end." If These Books Could Talk “I have resented the intrusion of real people while my mind grappled with the events in Sleep Tight” Cleo Loves Books

About the Author Rachel Abbott was born just outside Manchester, England. She spent most of her working life as the Managing Director of an interactive media company, developing software and websites for the education market. The sale of that business enabled her to take early retirement and fulfil one of her lifelong ambitions - to buy and restore a property in Italy. But even in Italy the winters can be cold and wet, and so Rachel decided to fill those dismal days by fulfilling another ambition - writing a psychological thriller! ONLY THE INNOCENT, her first novel, was more successful than she could ever have imagined, and it enabled her to change her life yet again, and become a full time writer. Her third novel, SLEEP TIGHT, was released on 24th February 2014 and was her third number one. Stranger Child, Rachel's latest book, was released on 24th February 2015. I have been hooked ever since. I recommend and buy her books for my family and friends. What better gift to give someone you love than a really great book! Nowhere Child is the answer to all your questions from Stranger Child. It has all the same suspense and twists and turns you have grown to love from Rachel's writing style. I agree with some of the other reviewers that I was still left wanting more and Rachel has left this book open in the sense that she very well could write another book building on where Emma, Tasha, and Ollie go from here. I know I really hope she does, but I also know that I look forward to anything she writes and I intend on being a Rachel Abbott fan for life or as long as she keeps writing. If you haven't read all of her other books, I highly recommend you do!

I was desperate to find out what happened to Tasha after she ran away. You can imagine how excited I was when Rachel Abbott announced that she was continuing the story.I started reading it yesterday and literally couldn't put it down. I fell asleep reading it and continued as soon as I opened my eyes.It follows on seamlessly from "Stranger Child", although Rachel gives you enough background information to enable it to be read as a stand-alone.My heart was in my mouth as I read it, wondering if Tasha would get the happy ending she so deserved.I adored this book and it is my top ten of books I've read. Can't wait to read Rachel's next book.

Add on Novella to Stranger Child, Explains what happened to Natasha By Cheryl M-M Nowhere Child is an add-on novella, and is part of the DCI Tom Douglas series by Rachel Abbott. More specifically it is part of Stranger Child, and a follow up to Natasha's story. In Stranger Child Natasha returns to her home many years after her mysterious disappearance. Taken as small child and turned into the modern equivalent of a Fagin's Oliver Twist type criminal. Her stepmother Emma is wary of the intruder, whereas her husband seems eager to just gloss over the missing years. Natasha ends up putting her baby brother in danger, so it would only be natural for Emma to want to see the back end of this troubled teen.Instead Emma finds herself drawn to the girl, and wants to help rather than remove the strange girl from her perfect life and picture book family scenario. Unfortunately Natasha has valid reasons not to trust anyone and also fears repercussions from her old gang, so she makes a run for it.Nowhere Child takes up the story from that point onwards. With Natasha sleeping rough under bridges and in tunnels, and Emma spending all her waking hours searching for her. The relationship between the two of them is unusual and yet at the same time quite refreshing. You don't have to give birth to a child to be a mother to one. It's a shame the powers that be don't always view non-biological relationships the same way. This story holds the answers to all the unanswered questions from Stranger Child. The most important one being: What happened to Natasha?I received a free copy of this book courtesy of the author.
