Against his mother’s wishes, John Charles Barrie joined the Australian army in 1909. Five years later, he was on his way to Egypt as an officer with the Australian Imperial Force. He survived the war to write his memoirs, which were kept by his family for 80 years. Made public for the first time, this book gives firsthand accounts of Barrie’s wounding at Gallipoli on that fateful first Anzac Day, his recuperation in England, and the friendships he made there. This is not a history textbook, nor is it a series of diary notes and letters—it is a gut-wrenching, heart-warming true story that will move you.

Memoirs of an Anzac: A First-Hand Account by an AIF Officer in the First World War, by John Charles Barrie

Review "If [Barrie] were a war poet, he would be a bush balladeer, galloping assuredly from one stanza to the next, breathlessly evoking one adventure after another in vivid, syncopated detail ... Barrie’s book offers a timely reminder that not everyone felt the war was a pointless waste of life. For some men, the war was their reason to live." —Mark Dapin, Weekend Australian"[Barrie's] account of trench warfare is deeply personal, detailing friendships, discomfort, disagreements and mischief. Barrie wrote his story in the 1930s, but it was never published. His granddaughter rescued the manuscript. We are in her debt." —Tim Hilferty, Adelaide Advertiser"An easy read, combining details of the action with an account of the personal side of the soldier’s life both in the trenches and out and a fair amount of humor thrown in ... a good way to learn about World War I without feeling bogged down in a history text." —Weekend Herald

About the Author Born in 1883, John Charles Barrie grew up in Victoria. He joined Australia’s militia in 1909, and remained an army man his entire life, retiring with the rank of colonel. Barrie died in 1957, survived by his wife and daughter. His memoirs have been made available by his granddaughter, Judy Osborne. Ross McMullin is a historian and biographer who has written extensively about the impact on Australia of its involvement in World War I. Dr McMullin’s books include his biographies, the award-winning Pompey Elliott and Will Dyson: Australia’s radical genius. His most recent book, Farewell, Dear People: biographies of Australia’s lost generation, was awarded the Prime Minister’s Prize for Australian History.

Barrie wrote his story up in the 1930 but it has only just been released by his granddaughter. Barrie's WW1 story is a bit unusual in that he was an officer in the militia from 1909. He therefore has a trained military eye for the famous events he was a part of in WW1. Namely, commanding infantry companies at Gallipoli and in France, with the 8th and 60th Battalions AIF.As a pre-war trained officer, Barrie's perspective is very interesting. Roles in the 1st Division were eagerly sought and he is grateful to get a command in the 8th Battalion. It is quite interesting to read of the training and his thinking regarding the programs and his commanders. He is a very enthusiastic soldier and can't wait for action. The preparation for Gallipoli and the events of the landing are fascinating. There is confusion and very difficult situations. Barrie is involved in leading his men at a critical point but is wounded on the first afternoon. The wound is a serious one and he is sent to England to recover. He finds England and its people to be wonderful. He avoids attempts to send him home and wrangles a job training machine-gunners. When he can, he manages to defy orders and returns to his unit in France. After this stint with the 8th he transfers to the 60th Battalion to serve under Pompey Elliott, who he reveres.Over the time he is in France Barrie is not involved in any of the big battles. His unit is in the line of course and he is shelled a lot. There are also various `day to day' duties that put him in the line of fire. He still has considerable luck, though this runs out in the end. So it is not an account of hand-to-hand fighting. Barrie's contribution was to effectively lead his men and this in itself is very interesting. There is quite a lot of detail on what he saw and it is a great testimony to the men of the AIF. While he was enormously impressed with the bulk of his fellow soldiers, some of the most interesting material concerns other officers who failed to measure up. There are some surprising and confronting stories here. At the end, despite the wounds, he is clearly proud of his involvement in the war.I have read quite a number of Australian WW1 memoirs now, quite a few of which were also written in the 1930s. To varying degrees the expression was dated. Barrie's memoir however is very fluent and is one of the most readable of all the offerings published. It might be that some editing occurred but that is for the good. Another positive is the excellent footnotes provided by Ross McMullin, who gives service and post-war details on many of the men that Barrie served with. It is a very informative book on many levels. On that broad basis I give it 4 stars, though on the narrower focus of combat action, it receives 3 stars. Have a look at my list for where it sits in relation to other Australian WW1 memoirs.

As Amber pushes away her feelings for Nathan to concentrate on Michelle, he's drawn more deeply to her. When news about Michelle's attacker is revealed, danger threatens Amber, and Nathan must find a way to protect her body and claim her heart. ***This is a serial romance book with three parts*** Part two will be available November 10th, 2015 and part three on November 17th, 2015 ***The story is continuing, so it's best to read the books in order.*** Book One Excerpt He stopped in mid-sentence on his phone call and stared at me, with this intense look on his face. Uh-oh. Was something wrong? Did I have a poppy seed stuck in my teeth? Becca would have told me. Or not. My mouth. It hung open like a car door. I closed it and made my lips smile. Calm down. This is a nice guy who likes to work with me. "I'll call you back." Nathan put his cell phone on the desk. "Hello Nathan. It's good to meet you in person. I'm Amber." I moved towards him, smacked my hip into the corner of the desk, and bit back a curse as pain shot through my leg. Do not drop the F bomb. Smile still in place, I stuck out my hand, praying it wasn't damp. He kept staring for another second, then kind of shook his head and smiled back. "So nice to meet you too, Amber. I've enjoyed working with you long distance." He took my trembling little paw and shook it. Wow. What the heck was that tingle running up my arm? His grip was firm, but not like he was crushing me. By the way his eyes widened, he felt something too. Maybe I'd picked up static electricity walking across the room. Not real likely, on tile floor, but I couldn't think of any other reason for this surge of energy. We stood there for an awkward moment while he studied me, then he dropped my hand. I wanted to glance down to see if there were scorch marks, but I grabbed it with my other hand and clasped them both in front of me. Before they did something silly, like reach up and stroke the slight shadow of a beard on his face. "Sit down, please." My legs shook as I took a seat in the chair across from the desk. What was I, a love-struck teenager meeting a rock star? Jeez, this was Nathan, the guy who laughed at my corny jokes and liked the pictures of my cat I emailed him. Why did a wave of heat flood my body, particularly in my girl parts? Because he was hotter than hell in person that's why. I didn't get that energy, that piercing awareness, when I talked to him on the phone. And I sure never smelled him. Kind of woodsy, with a bit of musk layered in. A hint of spice too; bay leaves, or cardamom. From his slightly messed up hair to his shiny Italian loafers, the guy radiated sex appeal. And those laser-beam eyes. No. I gave myself a mental bonk on the head. I had zero interest in his hotness. I had no time to think about men, with my jobs and my family situation. And anyway, gorgeous billionaires like him didn't look twice at plus-size girls like me. "So Amber, tell me why you'd be a good candidate for this position."

Everybody loves Miss Molly: a lively 72-year-old who gets a huge kick out of the retro scene and everything associated with it — the clothes, the hairstyles, the dances and especially her newly-renovated vintage trailer! Tammy, Georgie and Layla are thrilled with her reaction to their carefully-planned surprise, but their joy turns to concern when Rosa — an unexpected guest at the vintage trailer rally — tells them bluntly that sweet Miss Molly is in big trouble. They quickly learn that Molly is facing the prospect of having to sell the home she has lived in for fifty years, after her finances have taken a disastrous turn. Molly keeps her woes to herself while she teaches the retro crowd how to jive and faces down the card sharks at gin rummy, but bit by bit Georgie, Rosa and the team put together the pieces and find out what went wrong. What they discover leaves them both astounded and angry. Someone close to Molly is to blame for this situation - but who? Is it one of the waifs and strays that she welcomes into her home, or is it someone professing to be a good friend? This is a case that is very close to the hearts of Georgie’s little band of amateur sleuths, because one of the ‘lost lambs’ that Molly once took under her wing is none other than Tammy Dyson, the retro set’s “Rockabilly Princess” and girlfriend of Jerry B. Goode, Georgie’s brother. There is no way that Tammy is going to let anyone get away with doing the wrong thing by Miss Molly!

Review WHAT THEY'RE SAYING ON GOOD READS"Georgie B Goode REALLY is good!" So happy to have found this series to read. If the rest of the books are as enjoyable as this one, I will be a very happy reader indeed. I love Georgie, but her brother Jerry is a real jerk and it made me glad to see her beat him at his game. It's refreshing to see another smart woman retain her dignity in the face of unequal odds. [Karen]"FUN READ!" Quick light read. I think I will like this series. No messy murders, no pages and pages of sex, no high drama. Just a lot of fun on the road with Georgie B. In her Gypsy caravan (crystal ball included). [Norma Reasor]"GOOD READ" Enjoyed the read. Quick and catchy. The characters are easy to see in your mind. Just sit back and enjoy." [Anita] "A very fun little cozy mystery with a twist - no dead bodies!" [April]

The RV, caravan and gypsy fortune tellers themes blend beautifully with the retro crowd. Mystery and nostalgia, accurate and delightful descriptions of the fashion and styles of yesteryear all blended into another great read. Thanks Marg. Looking for the next one already!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. fun read with some interesting new characters By rokalily A quick, fun read with some interesting new characters. The series is about the RV retro lifestyle with a mystery thrown in for each book. And this newest book does not disappoint. Loved when Rosa and her great granddaughter Georgie did fortune readings in tandem to help solve Molly's mystery.

This one is particularly enjoyable: I had 50s kids as teachers in high school, and I always felt I grew up in the wrong era! Love the retro vibe!
