2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. just ok By autumnwind Nice read but that's about it. John is not the sharpest knife in the drawer and really not much of a detective. Bad guys breaking into his office and he never even knows. Most cases seem to get solved by chance rather than good detective work. Certainly not much character development either.

Dans writing style fresh and captivating as ever . I've enjoyed all his writing . Hope you continue to turn out these thrillers.

You find yourself going, 'C'mon Reacher! how could you miss that? There's a nuclear bomb right under Mother's Rest! It does for 'Make Me' what Tom Stoppard's 'Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead' did for 'Hamlet'. Nicholas Colt is a great character. It's good he doesn't actually want to kill Reacher. But you feel he could give it a pretty decent shot. Daring and, ultimately, satisfying. With a dash of surreal humor.

Georges Simenon's chilling portrayal of tragic love, persecution and betrayal.'One sensed in him neither flesh nor bone, nothing but soft, flaccid matter, so much so that his movements were hard to make out. Very red lips stood out from his orb-like face, as did the thin moustache that he curled with an iron and looked as if it had been drawn on with India ink; on his cheekbones were the symmetrical pink dots of a doll's cheeks.' People find Mr Hire strange, disconcerting. The tenants he shares his building with try to avoid him. He is a peeping Tom, a visitor of prostitutes, a dealer in unsavoury literature. He is also the prime suspect for a brutal murder that he did not commit. Yet Mr Hire's innocence will not stand in the way of those looking for a scapegoat as tragedy unfolds in this quietly devastating and deeply unnerving novel.'Compelling, remorseless, brilliant.' - John Gray 'One of the greatest writers of the twentieth century . . . Simenon was unequalled at making us look inside, though the ability was masked by his brilliance at absorbing us obsessively in his stories.' - The Guardian 'A supreme writer . . . unforgettable vividness.' - The Independent

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Georges Simenon was born on 12 February 1903 in Liège, Belgium, and died in 1989 in Lausanne, Switzerland, where he had lived for the latter part of his life.

Completed in 1933, Mr Hire’s Engagement is one of Simenon’s early novels. It recreates a scene that the author witnessed as a young reporter in Liège, a scene which continued to haunt him for years afterwards: that of an angry mob, and a man chased on to a roof, clinging to the cornice to keep from falling to his death.

Georges Simenon

MR HIRE’S ENGAGEMENT

Translated by Anna Moschovakis

1

The concierge cleared her throat before knocking, fixed her eyes on the Belle-Jardinière catalogue in her hand, and announced, ‘A letter for you, Mr Hire.’

She pulled her shawl tight across her chest. Somebody moved behind the brown door: first on the left, then on the right; first footsteps, then a muted rumpling of fabric and the clanking of pots; the concierge’s grey eyes seemed to penetrate the wood in pursuit of the invisible noise. At last it drew near. The key turned. A rectangle of light appeared, a carpet of yellow flowers, the marble of a washstand. A man held out his hand, but the concierge didn’t see it, or not clearly – in any case, she wasn’t paying attention. Her ferreting eyes had settled on another object: a towel soaked in blood, glaring deep red against the cold marble.

The door swung closed gently, of its own accord. The key turned again, and the concierge walked down the four flights of stairs, pausing now and then to think. She was thin; her clothes hung from her like a scarecrow’s rags from its skeleton of sticks. Her nose was damp, her eyelids red, her hands chapped from the cold.

On the other side of the glass-paned door to the concierge’s apartment, a young girl in flannel pyjamas stood in front of a chair with a shallow basin of water on it. Her brother, already dressed, was entertaining himself by splashing her; the table next to them had not been cleared.

Then came the distinct sound of the door opening. The boy turned around. The little girl exhibited a face drenched in tears.

‘What have we here … ?’

A slap for the boy, and his mother shoved him out the door.

‘You, off to school. And you, if you don’t stop crying …’

She grabbed the girl and got her into her dress, tugging on her arms like on a marionette’s. Then she hid the basin of soapy water in the cupboard, walked towards the door, turned around and walked back.

‘Have you finished whining?’

She was thinking, hesitating, her forehead creased, her small eyes worried. She nodded mechanically at the tenant from the second floor as he passed by in the hall; then all of a sudden, she threw on another shawl and hurried out on to the street, first turning down the flame on the stove.

It was freezing out. On the Fontainebleau road, which ran through Villejuif, the cars had slowed to a crawl because of the ice, their radiators exhaling steam. A hundred metres to the left was the main intersection, with a bistro on every corner, a policeman in the middle, busy streets stretching from the suburbs to the gates of Paris, trams, buses, cars. But on the right, two houses down, just past the last garage, it was already open road, the country – trees and fields white with frost.

The concierge shivered, hesitating again. She gestured weakly to a man standing on the corner, but he didn’t see her. She ran up to him and grabbed his arm.

In the fifth electrifying thriller featuring Will Cochrane, the Intelligence agent must solve the unsolvable: How did four international agents working on a super-secret mission die in a safe house bunker that was locked from the inside?

Critics have called Will Cochrane a “ruthless yet noble” (Ft. Worth Star-Telegram), “one-man weapon of mass destruction” (Daily Telegraph)—a brilliant agent from whom “Bond and Bourne could learn a thing or two” (Madison County Herald). His latest assignment will plunge him into the thorny politics of the Middle East. The stakes: averting a war that could engulf the world in flames.

When the Israeli ambassador to France is shot dead in Paris by an unknown sniper, the Israeli government blames Hamas and begins planning a massive invasion to obliterate the terrorist organization once and for all. To avoid an all-out war, three members of the UN Security Council—the United States, France, and the United Kingdom—assemble a team of intelligence agents to uncover the truth behind the assassination.

But when the team stops responding and all four agents are found dead in a bunker locked from the inside, they turn to freelance intelligence operative Will Cochrane for answers. To find out what really happened in the Paris shooting and in the bunker and prevent an unwinnable war, Cochrane will use his years of knowledge and experience to unravel the truth . . . and maybe just keep himself alive.

The Spy House: A Spycatcher Novel, by Matthew Dunn

Review “Another page-turner… A locked-room twist on the espionage novel… Dunn maintains his up-tempo pace without sacrificing character development and while allowing the tension to build incrementally. The ending makes clear that another entry in the series is on the way, and it can’t arrive fast enough.” (Booklist)“For those who love a good twist, there’s not one but three at the very end (even to the last sentence of the story). Nobody is who they seem, except perhaps Will Cochrane.” (ReviewingTheEvidence.com)“A timely story of espionage and intrigue… Chilling.” (Iron Mountain Daily News)

From the Back Cover

“No other spy thriller so successfully blends the business of espionage and intelligence work with full-throttle suspense storytelling.” JEFFERY DEAVER on Spycatcher

In this new electrifying Spycatcher thriller, Will Cochrane must discover how four agents on a top-secret mission died in a safe house bunker locked from the inside

When the Israeli ambassador to France is killed in Paris by an unknown sniper, the Israeli government blames Hamas and plans a massive invasion to obliterate the group. To avoid an all-out war the U.S. and its partners assemble a team of agents to find the truth behind the assassination.

Meanwhile, a young Palestinian refugee named Safa is pulled from his family and taken to France on a scholarship from the UN. He dutifully completes every lesson and mysterious task his guardian puts before him.

The task force agents work quietly in an undisclosed location in Beirut, Lebanon, called “Gray Site.” But when all four men are found dead in the bunker, authorities turn to former agent Will Cochrane. Murder-suicide seems likely, but Cochrane knows there has to be more to this story.

Cochrane must unravel the conspiracy, but even he doesn’t know what the boy Safa is really doing in France, how their stories converge—or if either of them will walk away alive.

“Another winner in this fine series . . . A writer who deserves comparison to Ludlum and Fleming.”  Booklist on Dark Spies

About the Author

As an MI6 field officer, Matthew Dunn recruited and ran agents, coordinated and participated in special operations, and acted in deep-cover roles throughout the world. He operated in environments where, if captured, he would have been executed. Dunn was trained in all aspects of intelligence collection, deep- cover deployments, small arms, explosives, military unarmed combat, surveillance, and infiltration.

Medals are never awarded to modern MI6 officers, but Dunn was the recipient of a rare personal commendation from the secretary of state for work he did on one mission, which was deemed so significant that it directly influenced the success of a major international incident.

During his time in MI6, Matthew conducted approximately seventy missions. All of them were successful. He currently lives in England, where he is at work on his next novel.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Another well written novel in the Spy Catcher series! Fans of Jason Bourne and Ethan Hunt will love it! By Pirate2240 4 men of various military forces from the around the world, are found brutally killed behind a locked and sealed door underground. Sounds a bit like some math or science puzzle but that is precisely behind the premise behind Matthew Dunn's latest novel The Spy House, the fifth book in the Spycatcher series. I have truly loved this entire series that takes readers into the life of William Cochrane, (think of Jason Bourne or Ethan Hunt) who has at this point been asked to leave the MI6 and CIA after serving so many years for both organizations. He has become a bit of a liability that they can't control. But just what can a man do now after this has become who he is? He contracts out his work now so he doesn't have to answer to anyone but that also means that he isn't provided with the creature comforts he was used to in order to accomplish his goal. This mission takes on a bit of a personal nature when Will learns that the man they are accusing of being guilty is his mentor and best friend. There is no possibility that the blame that they are placing on him is true and besides taking on this contract, he is also taking on the personal responsibility to oversee the investigation. This has all come to a culmination when an Israeli Ambassador to France is killed in cold blood by what some believe is a Hamas sniper in a Paris square. Israel wants to retaliate, but they lack the facts to connect these crimes to Hamas with 100% certainty. They have given the U.S. two weeks to provide the hard cold facts in this matter, before they launch their own mission against those they believe responsible and if they do so, it will put the U.S. in a position to choose what side they will support. A matter that could potentially led the entire world into a third world war. Now it's a race against time for Will to provide the answers but likely all could espionage thrillers, there are those that wish to prevent that from happening and soon the body count not only begins to rise, but becomes personal in nature to Will as well.I received The Spy House by Matthew Dunn compliments of William Morrow, a division of Harper Collins Publishers for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation, aside from a free copy of this book, in exchange for my honest review. This truly falls into the lines of such notable authors as Ian Fleming and John LeCarrè, so fans of their literary works will love this entire series. Some readers might take offense to the profanity used in this novel, so with that being said, I wanted to disclose that about the novel. It strikes me as odd how this novel came out just before the terrorists strikes in Paris and helps you understand the dark undercover work that our nations leaders use to help prevent things like this from happening, but they can't always prevent. I love that Matthew Dunn writes from the experience as a former MI6 officer and thus brings that sense of realism to his series. For me this one rates a 4 out of 5 stars in my opinion.

The mission is there, but it seems to take forever before the main characters to come to grips with the problem, The plot takes some unexpected twists about three quarters of the way through the story. A rash of peripheral killings throws a hard curve at the reader, but the pace picks up quickly as more surprising twists in the plot are revealed. The most surprising of all is saved for the very last line of the book. Despite the slow start, this is an interesting read that keeps the reader's interest throughout. I would liked to have seen more action scenes, but those that are there are well done.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Espionage thriller with well-rounded characters By Earl Matthew Dunn's The Spy House starts a little slow but picks up momentum as it progresses. Having not read the other books in the series I took the start to be a way to both set up the story of this volume (a locked-room mystery with intelligence agents from several countries, all dead, potentially leading to major military action) as well as introduce the recurring characters to a new reader. The pacing at the start is my only real issue with the book. One antagonist is written so well that I almost hated reading the chapters concerning him because my dislike was so great. I enjoyed both the major characters as well as the secondary characters, they all seemed to advance the plot and help develop the protagonist's character also. This will appeal to anyone interested in espionage thrillers as well as many who are interested in political thrillers. I am now likely to read the other books in the series to learn about how the protagonist has become who he is.Reviewed from a copy made available through Goodreads First Reads.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. As Good As Ever By Erin J. Four books in and Daggers & Steele are going as strong as ever! The mystery is top notch, as usual. Lots of twists, lots of head-scratching clues that don’t really make a ton of sense until the end, with Daggers coming up will all kinds of crazy theories to throw us readers off track. I will say that the fantasy elements take a back seat to the mystery (as they have in pretty much the whole series, to be honest), but they are important, and as long as you don’t forget that you’re in a fantasy world, you’ll probably figure out what’s going on in this one a bit before Daggers & Steele do. Also this book is a little darker than the others? Goes with the subject matter, I guess.Besides the mystery, we get a new wrench thrown into Daggers and Steele’s relationship. The two are skating on thin ice at times, it seems. But Daggers shows he’s not a total dope and figures things out at the end. I’m optimistic for the pair.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The stories continue & get better. Oh - this is the latest & I WANT MORE! By John McKown The characters are becoming more complex and interesting. Don't want any "spoilers", but Daggers has it bad for Steele. Eagerly awaiting the next in the series.

McCort While just finishing another book by author J A Whiting; Sweet Cove Mysteries; I was looking for something else. I saw that this is book 1 of Lin Coffin, read the description and decided that it sounded very good.Good is an understatement. I loved it. I got so caught up in Lin Coffin and her cousin Vin that I hate to say, I was up all night reading and when I finished I was oh no...I want book 2.Lin has returned to the island of her birth after her Grandfather died and left her his house. Lin as a child growing up would sometimes see ghosts, but twenty years have passed and not seeing any Lin thought she had grown out of it. No; when a murder occurs and her cousin Vin is being questioned by the police, Lin begins to experience ghosts everywhere and clues to investigate. Not giving away too much, I think you will enjoy this book and continued stories with Lin and Vin

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Drop everything. Read this author. By L. N. Potts There are writers and there are authors. Writers publish books, regardless of quality; authors tell stories; again, regardless of quality. Whiting is an outstanding writer and author, telling stories with believable characters with clear and reasonable motivation, good pacing and dialogue. She is also a great writer who can tell the difference between 'there' and 'their'; present and past tense, and who has access to (and USES!) spell-check. There are too many authors out there in e-book-land who seem to think that because they can self-publish, they SHOULD self-publish - often without the benefit of an editor or even a proof-reader. Coming across Whiting's books, therefore, is an absolute delight. Each of her series sticks to it's own tone, from breezy/cozy to serious. All are an excellent read. (Plus, she really gets cats...) My recommendation is to read everything she has written.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Small Town Slueth By Katsitko Lin Coffin returns to the island of her childhood. Before Lin can blink, she is tiptoeing around a murder mystery. Her best friend Viv, and little dog Nick are along for the adventure. Some of Lin's memories of long ago come creeping back and seem just out of the reach of her mind. It's a little bit of Nancy Drew, a little just becoming a young adult and a little bit of 'what things like this are real?' It's an easy reading story that won't invade your dreams after turning off the bedroom light at night.Yes, I will read the next book in this series.

Elite combat veteran Jesse Yates is used to things being simple: find the enemy and kill him. But when his country opts out of the fight, Yates opts out of the military. Now he just wants to be a regular guy and fit back into society. But he’s not a regular guy, and this is America, 2016, overregulated and stressed out, where every act seems to involve a risky set of consequences. Jesse needs a job after quickly washing out as a trucker, and Palm Court Detectives can provide the two things he wants more than anything right now—a chance for the occasional thrill and a close-knit team like the ones he always had in the military. Yates could have picked a better first assignment than driving an 18-wheeler again to draw out hijackers, but he’s not the kind of guy who questions his marching orders. Devotion to duty and supreme confidence soon put the rookie private eye in the middle of a turf war between hijackers who he likes, outlaw bikers who like him (or what he can do for them) and a drug cartel renegade with a severe Jesse Yates problem. He gets drawn into a toxic plot so fast and so deep that every move he makes is a crap shoot, based on pure instinct. When Yates finds himself once again at death’s door but this time deeply involved in a conspiracy with potential for massive civilian casualties, he’s going to have to make one more precise decision and fall back hard on his extreme training and lethal skills. But in this fight, for the first time, Jesse Yates is on his own. Get on board at the beginning of this brand new crime thriller series, featuring the Palm Court Detectives, a skyrocketing new agency run by laicized Jesuit priest Ernie Donovan in a refashioned vintage motel in Mobile, Alabama.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I think this is a good intro to a new series By Stephen L. Brayton PlotFresh out of the military and after a short stint as a truck driver, Jesse Yates joins Palm Court Detectives. His first assignment: figure out who's hijacking trucks for the cargo. Yates goes undercover but soon things turn serious and he finds himself delivering a cargo of death.I think this is a good intro to a new series. The plot holds it own for the most part, is well thought out with only a few glitches here and there.CharactersJesse Yates: former Navy SEAL, former Marine, former truck driver, private detective, knows martial arts, former smoker, has a sister, dad was a paratrooperErnie Donovan: runs Palm Court Detectives, priest, 50s, black hairSheila: former actress, P.I. who works for DonovanJimmie Flynn: owns Flynn Transportation, almost 50, tad portly, brown hair, married, 2 sons, has a brotherDonna Grey: dark hair, ponytail, former Army, dad was a Marine, works at a bowling alleyThere are a bunch of baddies and a couple are pretty involved. There are also some bit federal players I would have liked to have seen in more than one chapter. This book dealt mostly with Yates but I would like to have seen the other members of the PCD involved more. Maybe in future stories.DialoguePretty good voices. Yates tends to be hesitant a lot, asking questions, and almost overboard with his doubts and fears. The grit and character to have become a SEAL doesn't hold over here in the detective world except in the action scenes.WritingSome profanity, but not a lot.Speaking of actions scenes, they're tight and well coordinated. The author shows his knowledge of trucking and fighting. There were some slow parts building up to the climax and this is a short (er) story than a lot of mysteries. For instance, I thought there was too much back and forth between Yates and the bad guys in the final part of the book. Too much arguing.I mentioned the feds. I wold have liked to have seen them again at the end, just to wrap it up with their part of the whole story.Shorter meant a faster read.Again, the rank I give does not mean I didn't like it. I think this series has a lot of potential and this fills a good niche in the mystery genre. My Rank:Green Belt

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great read By Dustin This book definitely had some exciting moments, but I was also intrigued by the whole Palm Court Detectives scenario—a brand new, fast growing agency run by a former priest who has the whole community in the palm of his hand because people feel guilty for not supporting him when he was falsely accused and then exonerated. Father Ernie Donavon is not above playing that guilt for all it’s worth and extracting favors from important people. The Palm Court gang also includes a middle aged police detective who was also falsely accused and then proved innocent (with Donavon’s help), an investigative reporter who lost his job and couldn’t get a new one because he was considered obese and a drag on his newspaper’s medical insurance program, an actress who got burned out in New York, and another young woman who got burned out as a paralegal in a high powered Atlanta law firm. They all live in a refashioned vintage motel, that Donavon, who comes from old money, made luxurious on the inside while keeping its retro motel exterior. This is an interesting situation that bodes well for future stories. They’re even getting a chef.Best of all is Jesse Yates, Donavon’s newly hired “tough guy.” He’s a former Navy SEAL with a lot of martial arts skills and combat experience (along with his share of issues) but is a fish out of water as a civilian and as a rookie detective. This is a good first book of what has the potential to be a very interesting series. I’m looking forward to the next one.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. LOTS OF THRILLS & ACTION By booklover Looking for a thriller full of energy and movement and action? You've come to the right place!Jesse Yates, a man just out of the military is looking for his place in the world. He gets a long haul truck driving job, but to a man who has fought in wars, this job is just way too peaceful. But then a job offer comes along that gets his blood pumping again ... working for the Palm Court Detective Agency. And lo and behold his first assignment is .... undercover as a truck driver. There have been a rash of truck heists and he finds himself involved with the hijackers, a Mexican drug cartel and outlaw bikers.I really like Jesse! He has so much confidence in himself and his abilities to take on anything that comes his way. I like that he misses the men who fought along side of him and is looking for that kind of closeness with his new colleagues. This is the beginning of a new series. From the book blurb ... a skyrocketing new agency run by laicized Jesuit priest Ernie Donovan in a refashioned vintage motel in Mobile, Alabama.I am looking forward to following this series ... I like the thought of watching Jesse grow into a 4-star investigator. Many thanks to the author and to Word Slinger Publicity who furnished an ARC in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.
