He is a big huge jackass but he is sooo good at it. I am hooked. Erik despises the complaining and all of the needs that humans need met on a daily basis. It infuriates him that he tries to block Astrid out. Yet, he is drawn to her as a moth to a flame. Will she be the demise to his pack? Astrid does have to upper mouth, Hand when they finally make it back to the den. I found that part very exciting and interesting that one act can make this Alpha crumble… Viola does a great job of leaving you screaming for more! Big Sigh I guess I will have to wait a few more weeks for Part five.

Astrid & Erik's "relationship" takes a few steps forward, but like most relationships that start out with sex there are issues to work through. The intense love scenes return in part 4. Erik's priorities are changing as well. Part 4 is a nice progression in the overall story with good growth between the main characters.

By jlswainsboro/Judy Lewis Title: Enslaved by the Alpha: Part FourSeries: Shifters of NunavutDesignation: Part Four of an Multi-Installment Serial, Not a Standalone, Does Include CliffhangerAuthor: Viola RivardReading Platform: Kindle UnlimitedMy Rating: FIVE SUPER SEXY STARS*****Yowza! New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Viola Rivard has knocked it out of the park - again! Enslaved by the Alpha is a multi-installment serial and first release in her captivating new series, Shifters of Nunavut and folks, it's a real firecracker! And it just keeps getting better and better! The story is exciting, edgy, thrilling, imaginative, humorous, arousing, romantic and seductive. Oh, and did I mention hot? Oh yes, it's definitely hot! The narrative is exceptionally well written in the third person with alternating his and her points of view. The dialogue is well executed and flows effortlessly. And the characters... well, they're always the best part of Viola's stories. Don't get me wrong, Viola's books are always fast paced, well crafted, well developed and well edited and truly, a pleasure to read but it's her characters that I fall in love with every single time. Her characters are always unique, captivating, engaging, endearing and at times, laugh out loud funny but above all else, Viola creates, hands down, the most grumpy, growly, quite possibly irredeemable and certainly the most arrogant male antiheroes of anyone I know. You know, the kind we love to hate but secretly love, and of course, are always devilishly handsome.(Swoon....) And the male protagonist in this story is no exception. The interaction and banter between male and female protagonist is delightful and often hilarious and their sexual chemistry is almost palpable. Viola skillfully combines all of these elements to craft a delightfully entertaining paranormal tale filled to the brim with heart-pounding danger, heartbreaking drama, heart-stopping action, spine-tingling adventure, side-splitting humor and let's not forget, steamy, dreamy romance. When I read a Viola Rivard story, I'm always reminded of the Carly Simon song, Nobody Does It Better. The words replay in my mind: Nobody does it better, Makes me feel sad for the rest, Nobody does it half as good as you, Baby you're the best. And Viola definitely is the best! Buckle up my lovelies! It's another wild ride! And this time, we travel to the tundra of the Arctic for our story.Book One:Twenty-eight year old Astrid Castello is very much out of her element. As a native Floridian, the climate of the Arctic tundra definitely does not agree with her and it's all her younger sister Ginnifer's fault. Months ago, her sister had traveled to the Arctic to film a documentary on the way of life of werewolf packs living in the area and after finishing her film, she returned to the Siluit Pack and Zane, their alpha, is holding her prisoner. If her sister isn't already dead and Astrid can somehow manage to rescue her, then she's going to kill her for this. She doesn't even really like her sister but here she is, neck deep in trouble in the Arctic, trying to rescue her sister for her parents' sake. Yes, it's for them because she doesn't want to tell them that their favored daughter has traveled back to Nunuvat to live with the Siluit werewolf pack. And it has cost her everything including all her money! Well, technically the twelve thousand dollars she paid for her guides was actually Ginnifer's money since she withdrew(stole) it from Ginnifer's bank account but she wouldn't have had to do it if Ginnifer had stayed at home instead of traipsing all over the globe as a freelance documentary filmmaker. And now, she finds herself in the middle of nowhere with a group of men who started out as her very kind guides but had now turned into a group of opportunists who were only interested in poaching the furs of werewolves and probably murdering her. Her plan was to travel to the location of the Amarok Pack and try to make a deal with their Alpha, Erik, to enlist his help in recovering her sister from the rival Siluit Pack where her sister is being held. Unfortunately, her meeting with the Amarok Pack did not go as planned. She has seriously underestimated the sheer and savagery of the werewolves because the wolves of the Amarok pack have just slaughtered all of her very questionable guides, leaving only her alive. Oh my! Erik is a handsome, arrogant, ruthless and very selfish wolf who is determined to have things his way and unfortunately, there's only one deal the Alpha is willing to accept - her. Huh? Oh yes, Erik demands that she give herself willingly to him in exchange for him helping to rescue her sister. Oh my goodness! What's a girl to do? Why, make a deal, of course! Sadly, Astrid soon realizes that she has truly sacrificed everything to rescue her sister from the clutches of a demon and in the process, has ended up selling her own soul to the devil. Oh my! Will Astrid somehow manage to save her sister and herself or will she be Erik's new plaything until he grows tired of her and gives her to another wolf???Book Two:The story continues with Astrid struggling to find her place in the pack while learning exactly what being owned by Erik entails. At the same time, Erik is desperately struggling to control his wolf, something he has never had a problem with before. Apparently his beast believes that Astrid is his mate and is determined to have her and only her.Oh my! Will Erik be able to maintain his control or will he lose the battle to his wolf??? Will Astrid be able to convince Erik to rescue her sister from the Siluit Pack???Book Three:The story continues with Erik finally agreeing to send a group of wolves to the Siluit Pack to rescue Ginnifer but after Astrid reveals a possible relationship between Ginnifer and the Alpha, Zane, Erik changes his plans and decides to make the journey himself and use Astrid as a bargaining chip to gain access to the Siluit Pack's hunting grounds. Their dangerous journey results in changes in the relationship between the two unlikely lovers and Erik begins to see Astrid in a new light. Maybe his wolf wasn't so wrong after all. But will they be able to rescue Ginnifer from Zane or does she even need saving???Book Four: Astrid learns that her sister Ginnifer is now mated to Zane. What? Oh yes! And they truly love each other and are expecting their first child. She has sacrificed her life for nothing. Well, maybe nothing is stretching the truth since Erik now seems determined to make her his mate. Huh? Oh my! Originally, Erik had planned to just take her until he tired of her and then give her to another member of his pack but he has quickly come to the sudden realization that he wants no one else to even touch her - ever! Oh my goodness! He wants her to become his mate in every since of the word including giving her a pup - his pup! Erik discovers that he truly likes the idea and having her as his mate and having a pup of his own to teach and to one day become alpha of his pack. He likes it a lot but Astrid doesn't appear to be enthusiastic about the idea. She knows she become pregnant and have a child - she's already tried. That's what broke up her marriage. So, she convinces Erik to accept a bargain - if she's not pregnant by spring, he will allow her to leave and go back home to Florida. Hmmm....But is leaving Erik what she really wants??? Has Erik's harsh and abrasive personality turned Astrid against him for good or could she be developing real feelings for the handsome, aggressive alpha??? Unfortunately, there are members of the Amarok pack who oppose their mating for reasons of their own and Astrid's life may be at risk. Can Astrid ever be truly safe with the Erik's pack??? I guess we'll have to wait and see. No spoilers from me but I will say this......Arrogant, ruthless, dominant Alpha wolf who takes what he wants regardless of the consequences and may just be irredeemable-check! Curvaceous, naive heroine who is on a mission to save her sister and may just talk the alpha wolf to death-check! A sister who is 'supposedly' being held captive by a rival werewolf pack-check! A cast of wonderful characters-check! Danger, drama, action, adventure and enemies galore-check! Humor, heated attraction, unconventional romance and steamy dreamy sex-you bet! That and a whole lot more! I can hardly wait for the next installment! Seriously sexy, completely captivating and delightfully entertaining!

A man, a dog, and a fatal obsession ***** To say that David Wallace has been having a run of bad luck is like claiming that the maiden voyage of the Titanic was simply "an unfortunate excursion." The ill-fated American expatriate has lost his wife, his job, and his reputation. Just as it seems that all hope has vanished, he's informed that he is the heir to his great aunt's estate in the bucolic English village of Chambury. Once there, he discovers that his inheritance also includes his late aunt's grieving dog, a vintage typewriter, a mysterious key, and an entanglement in a series of unsolved murders. ***** James Ignizio is the author of more than a dozen books, several short stories, and over 350 articles. Included among his novels are "The Dog at the Gate" and the award-winning "The Last English Village," two cozy mysteries that take place in the Cotswold region of England.

By Izze Stringer The Dog at the Gate (the second in a series of Cozy British Mysteries by James Ignizio) presents a delightful, well-written tale of murder and mystery in a small village located within the Cotswolds region of England. David Wallace, an American expatriate, has had - to say the least - a run of bad luck. His circumstances, however, seem to undergo a major turnaround when he discovers that he is the sole heir to his great aunt's estate - a Victorian house located within the bucolic English village of Chambury. All, however, is not what it seems. David's late aunt's death may not have been an accident. The vintage typewriter in her study may hold the secret to her death - and to a series of unsolved murders. Fans of Agatha Christie and other classic British mysteries are sure to be delighted. If any book deserves a 5-star rating, it is The Dog at the Gate.

In Peter James' You Are Dead, the last words Jamie Ball hears from his fiancée, Logan Somervile, are in a terrified mobile phone call from her. She has just driven into the underground car park beneath the apartment block where they live in Brighton, and seen a man acting strangely. Then she screams and the phone goes dead. The police are on the scene within minutes, but Logan has vanished, leaving behind her neatly parked car and cell phone.

That same afternoon, workmen digging up an old asphalt path in a park in another part of the city, unearth the remains of a young woman in her early twenties, who has probably been dead for 30 years.

At first, to Detective Superintendent Roy Grace and his Major Crime Team, these two events seem totally unconnected. But then another young woman in Brighton goes missing and another body from the past surfaces. At the same time a strange man visits an eminent London psychiatrist, claiming to have a piece of information on the missing woman, Logan, that turns out, at first, to be wrong-or so it seems. It is only later Roy Grace makes the chilling realization that this one thing is the key to both the past and the present-and now, beyond any doubt, he knows that Brighton has its first ever serial killer.

You Are Dead is number 11 and for a change, I bought the Audible version. I was hooked throughout.Grace is settled with Cleo and his son, Noah and they're about to move home when he's called in to lead on a missing person case. One disappearance leads to another and it soon becomes a major incident. James is excellent at the police procedural aspect. Developments play out in short sharp chapters in what feels like real time, keeping the pace and tension tight. More than that, he also has great psychological insight into his characters. There's a sense of familiarity and continuity as the story picks up from events at the end of the previous book. This book works well as a stand alone, but there are threads throughout the series and sub plots continue to develop.I felt the plot was particularly well executed. There's a real sense of drama which builds to a literally heart pounding climax. Plus a further twist, but I'll reveal nothing more! The action is firmly rooted in Brighton. The strong sense of location as the story unfolds reinforces both plot and characters.I'm enjoying the way Grace is changing as a character. He's again troubled by conflict of loyalty and duty, home versus work, present versus past, old rivalries and new beginnings. He's torn on more than one occasion and there's an interesting development in the Sandy story. His work colleagues feature again and I'm interested in how their lives move forward. So all in all, this is yet another first class winner. I enjoyed it and was left wanting more.

When told YOU ARE DEAD could be read without going back and catching up I took it with a grain of salt. It’s not an easy thing, to pick up a series so far in and not feel a bit lost or feel the loss of the history, all the interactions and events that have occurred. Color me surprised when it turned out to be true.Roy Grace is a protagonist who’s easy to like. Well seasoned and mature, he’s no stranger to heartache. His first wife, Sandy, disappeared ten years prior. But now he’s re-married, has a young son, Noah, and is moving to the country. Despite all these fresh starts, the intervening years, and his love for Cleo and Noah, Sandy is never far from his thoughts. The Sandy –missing wife- subplot was, truth be told, as intriguing to me as the murder mystery, maybe even a little more.Grace’s Major Crime Team is like a small family but his new boss is a PITA. That’s often the case but there’s more than a personality clash in this situation. As a reader whose first experience with procedurals were Ed McBain’s 87th Precinct and Dell Shannon’s Luis Mendoza’s, the demonstrativeness Grace shows with members of his team, especially Glenn Branson, took some getting used to. Given his close relationship with police Mr. James is likely dead on but still…..The sections told from the killer’s perspective are creepy as Mr. James takes readers on short trips to the past to witness the evolution of a serial killer. The devils in the details and they’re there. Part of the appeal of mysteries is trying to figure everything out. While the “who” wasn’t difficult, the one aspect I was completely off in the weeds on was much more disturbing than I’d imagined when revealed. Never in a million years would that have occurred to me.There’s one thing that strikes me every time I read or watch a contemporary mystery set in England, the prevalence of CCTV cameras. They’re as ubiquitous there as McDonald’s seem to be here. The Roy Grace series with its quick pace, provocative subplot(s), tangled relationships, and interesting characters is engaging and highly readable. Whether you start at the beginning or with YOU ARE DEAD, it’s easy to get hooked.Reviewed for Novels Alive TV

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Once you start reading, you won’t be able to stop By Bookreporter I treasure the Roy Grace series. Grace is the brainchild of Peter James, a British wordsmith who is unsurpassed in what he does and how he does it. He is a quietly obsessed Detective Superintendent with the Brighton, England police force. As fleshed out by James over the course of what is now 11 books, Grace is the type of investigator you would want on the case, should your loved one be a victim: methodical, driven and concise. He is no fool but nevertheless rushes in, although carefully (as seen at one point in this latest installment of the series).James does quite a bit in the space that is allotted to him within the bindings of a book, and somehow manages to do so without making the reader feel cramped or confused. That proposition is particularly well-demonstrated in YOU ARE DEAD, which gives the reader much more than an entertaining and complex mystery. The mystery, though, is more than enough to carry the novel, which begins with the brazen abduction of a young woman named Logan Somerville from her parking garage. The unexpected discovery of a long-moldering corpse at a construction site, almost simultaneously with Logan’s kidnapping, creates a pair of investigations for Grace that haunt his every minute. With regard to Logan, there has been no ransom note or further communication from the kidnapper. Everyone, particularly Grace and his Major Crime Team, fear the worst, given that few abductees who are not held for ransom survive for more than a day or two. Additionally, a woman who has had a propensity for going missing before vanished again a couple of weeks prior to Logan’s abduction. The similarity in appearance that the two missing females share makes Grace wonder if perhaps a serial abductor is operating. As for the unnamed corpse, Grace, as with the best of law enforcement, feels that it is his duty to stand for the dead and bring those who brought about their demise to justice.Meanwhile, a well-known psychiatrist, who is a relative of Logan’s, consults with a new and very eccentric patient who claims to have knowledge concerning Logan’s abduction. His information, though wrong (at least initially), ties in with that of the recently discovered corpse. It takes a bit of time before this is brought to Grace’s attention. In the meantime, yet another woman is abducted, even as a terrified Logan lies helpless in a makeshift casket awaiting her fate.Grace refuses to let life get in the way of his investigation, diverting the task of moving with his wife and son from their old home to a new residence in the country and navigating office politics, which has placed an old professional nemesis as his immediate superior. He also comes to learn that a woman lying comatose in a hospital bed in Germany may well be (and, in fact, is) Sandy, his long-vanished wife who had been declared dead. None of this deters Grace from his goals of saving Logan and bringing her abductor to justice, even as the clock ticks ever onward.James resolves all of the main issues presented in YOU ARE DEAD --- well, almost all of them --- but leaves enough plot threads dangling to make the wait until the next Grace book (and beyond) all but excruciating. Be warned: Once you start reading, you won’t be able to stop until you finish and will be impatient as you wait for its successor. It’s one of those rare agonies that you’ll thoroughly enjoy.Reviewed by Joe Hartlaub

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Very exciting and original detective novel that even people who don't like detective novels, like me, will love By Amazon Customer Without giving away any spoilers, I have to say that this book and the idea in it is very original. You probably wouldn't guess who the killer is, the detective was stumped and I was stumped as to how the detective was ever going to crack the case, since the murders were so cleanly carried out there were no clues. They were almost the perfect crime. Really great writing and very entertaining with some intriguing sub-plots in addition to the main murder mystery plotline, that keep this story interesting all the way through. I do have to add that I am not very much into detective novels, and I usually wouldn't buy them or read them. But I LOVE ALL of Netta Newbound's work! If you have never read anything by Netta Newbound I would recommend that you get this book just so you can discover a new and exciting author. Not all of her novels are detective novels so even if, like me, you aren't very much into detective stories, I'm sure you will find something of hers that you like. And that you like so much that, like me, you will even end up getting her detective novels too, even if you aren't into detective stories, because her ideas are so original and her novels are exciting. Her stories are not in the least bit boring, where nothing happens for five pages, which unfortunately I find too often in books labelled as thrillers or suspense. Unlike some authors I've read recently, Netta Newbound does not digress, wander around reminiscing about back story that is boring and irrelevant to the plot or spend a long time reflecting on life. This book is also not one of those books (which I've also encountered all too often recently) that promise you lots of exciting action, and then you only get one small, unexciting event every two chapters or so. Netta Newbound is really into action! So if you are also into action without a lot of rambling around, get this book!!!Well, I could say more. Complicated plotlines, complicated, tricky sub-plots. You won't get bored with this book!I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest, no-strings-attached review.

By sarah hardy Mind Bender is the third book in the Adam Stanley series, I would strongly recommend reading the first two books in the series before reading this one.Even though Adam and Frances have their work cut out trying to solve what appears to be random shootings, things in Adam's personal life finally comes to a head.Adam and Amanda are obviously mad about each other and the only thing stopping them from fully getting together is Amanda's horrific past. Amanda can't bear to tell Adam the full truth about her past as she knows due to Adam's job he would have to report it. When little Mary is taken by Amanda's brother Andrew, my heart was literally in my mouth. Finding her is literally a race against time and I couldn't get through the pages quick enough to see what the outcome was.The actual shootings that Adam and Frances are investigating had me totally baffled. I had no idea why these random people that seem to be just ordinary folk would drop everything and go and shoot what appears to be a total stranger to them. It is all very strange and even though things seem to become clearer, the author throws in another twist that I didn't see coming.Mind Bender felt very much like either the ending for the Adam Stanley series or for the books to maybe centre solely on Adams detective work due to the relationship between Adam and Amanda finally coming to a head. Either way I have very much enjoyed the three book in the series and having now read all of this authors novels will be waiting patiently for any new releases. Many thanks to the author for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Review "An absorbing and delightful cozy mystery.  Binnacle Bay is running over with likely suspects, and any mystery buff will thoroughly enjoy following along as Chief Pat Fitzlaff gamely traces a twenty-year-old trail of deceit and deception.  "This book is written in the spare prose style of a superb whodunit.... It's a tangled web that's spun out to best effect in the fast-moving final pages, leading the reader first down one promising track, then another. We look forward to the next book in this outstanding series." - Publishers Daily Reviews

Smith Although I have never lived in a seaside village like Binnacle Bay, the author very deftly made me feel as if I had done so. She has the knack of creating a rich sensory experience for the reader that lingers long after the book is finished. It only took a few pages before I was looking out into the story through the eyes of Chief Fitzlaff. Sometimes I saw shades of the brilliant Twin Peaks without the weirdness and surrealism. Some characters could have been left out, and instead the remaining characters who had a part to play in the plot could have been developed further. This is just a personal thing and in no way detracts from the high quality of this book, but I was perhaps expecting a build up to another tragedy or major event of some sort. I would have loved to have seen, in the closing pages, proper retribution catching up with the two men who, in their younger days, had done what they did to Darcy, for even in adulthood they were just as unpleasant beings as they had been aged 16. But then again, in real life the bad guys so often get away. The plot is very carefully thought out and seemed so real that it could have happened in just the way it unfolded. Everything was down-to-earth and well within the realms of credibility, as it should be in a good detective/mystery novel. Because there is a plethora of crime novels in the marketplace, each writer has to find a particular niche, and there is certainly a very distinct niche for this kind of novel; it is more than large enough to make The Bloody Lighthouse an extremely respectable commercial success and it is just a question of finding the right marketing avenues and tools to accomplish this.

Grattan Set in Binnacle Bay, a small town on the Pacific Northwest coast, this mystery reads like a version of Murder She Wrote. Instead of Jessica Fletcher, we get Chief of Police Pat Fitzlaff, a folksy type who knows everyone in town. Told from his perspective, we follow him around the town from bars, diners, gift shops, the marina, etc, where he knows everyone. One can feel and smell the atmospherics of the seaside town. In this case, he is concerned about a middle-aged man, newly arrived in Binnacle Bay, who has apparently fallen to his death from a tall lighthouse on a very foggy night. It doesn’t take Chief Pat long to find out that the stranger was seen by several residents the night of his death, and, most interestingly, he has a connection to the town going back some twenty-five years. The Chief competently processes the evidence, but key to his success is his ability to persuade others to finally reveal their suppressed truths. In the end, the plot is pretty straightforward, the solution never really very far away. The story has an easy flow that is consistent with the laid-back Chief. It would take a kindly heart to put up with his wolf-sized dog Murphy. And then there is the dicey situation he has with his girlfriend, who doesn’t really get his love for his job.

The author cleverly develops the characters and their foibles so that you actually feel you know them. My favorite is the huge silky-coated hound, Murphy. The Chief of Police is never going to get a job in Chicago or New York but he's perfect for the small fishing village of Binnacle Bay.The Bloody Lighthouse is an intriguing tale which heads off in many tangents until the author brings it altogether at the end.I thought the English had a monopoly on good cozy mysteries like Midsomer Murders and Poirot. However, Sue Harker's entertaining and heart-warming writing is more than a match for the EnglishYou will enjoy The Bloody Lighthouse as a standalone novel. You'll enjoy it more if you read Binnacle Bay first.

For defense attorney Isis Ferrelli, life is good—until the second day of the Norman Kane trial… Her client was accused of using QR code software he’d developed to steal a drug called Fentanol. But when he’s murdered, Isis fears someone from her own past might be involved. Her uncle, Louis Fernoza, put her through law school. Now a mob boss, he wants to end their estrangement and make use of the star attorney he created. To protect those she cares about, Isis turns to her crime blog and her alter-ego Marjorie Gardens to find answers… MyThugShot.com is Isis’s resource to find out how Kane’s QR code was hacked to set him up for the theft, and who had decided “dead” was a better strategy than “framed.” With the help of her blog followers, she begins to dig into the Kane family, where no one is who they seem. Photographs of a building, a Nieman Marcus loafer, and a programmer with two names… When a new online member appears at the Kane estate, Isis’s investigation is thrown into chaos. He seems to know the murderer…and how to take Isis offline permanently. In order to find a tech-savvy killer, Isis must take her search into the digital age…even at the risk of her own unmasking.

From the Author New Case File Opened on Cozy Mysteries:The Face of Cozy Mysteries Changes Forever...Fans may cry out. Amateur sleuths may arm themselves with glue guns and needlepoints. And beloved cat and dog sidekicks may cower in corners. But there's no need for tea shops and bakeries to hang their Closed signs. The Marjorie Garden Mystery series merely suggest: "Cozies can be more than knitting grannies, cats, and cookbooks".The Digital Age Cozy embodies all the usual characteristics of the genre, but come with an all-important upgrade. The Cozy Mystery has been hacked... Don't run your antivirus software.

From the Inside Flap Excerpt     Twenty-five, russet-blond bed-hair, a tantalizing cross between Russell Crowe and Josh Dallas: it was Norman Kane all right. A star-shaped entry wound blackened on his forehead indicated up close and personal. I had certainly seen enough case photos to recognize an execution when I saw it.      I turned to the lead detective and medical examiner, both middle-aged veterans in their respective fields, and addressed the ME. "I'm all ears, Nick. What do you have for me?"     "Retracted a .38 Special round from the victim's brain. I'm waiting on ballistics to confirm. I put the time of death between one and three." The short, thin man with glasses covered the body and then motioned toward the tall, husky gentleman in the room. "As I explained to Detective Tudor, this is pretty straightforward, no bruising or markings to indicate a fight. Our vic didn't put up a struggle."     So, Norman's attack caught him off guard, a total surprise. I realized what that meant.    The handsome billionaire knew his killer.

About the Author My passion for writing began with a hunger for books from fellow New Jerseyan Judy Blume, and Nancy Drew mysteries. And each Saturday, a side dish of The Hardy Boys whet my appetite for hunting down clues and solving crime. Thus began a three-course menu for becoming a writer. For hors d'oeuvres, I sampled women's fiction for a bit with novels, All Waters Gathering (2008) and Carruther's Place (2011). It wasn't until I realized murder should really be on the menu when the main course became my thriller, Barbecue (2011). My plate's not quite clean of things that go bump in the night--plenty of horror and creepy thrillers in the works!--but one must always save room for dessert. Rich and sweet came Dial QR for Murder, the first Digital Age Cozy™ in the Marjorie Gardens Mystery series. And I haven't reached the icing on the cake just yet! Stay tuned.A.E.H. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Smart and complex mystery By Elizabeth Roderick I had the pleasure of reading Dial QR for Murder by A.E.H. Veenman. This would technically be called a cozy mystery. The main character is a young attorney in a prominent Boston firm. When one of her clients is murdered, she teams up with the sexy assistant D.A. to solve the murder, butting heads both with the victim’s rich relatives and the main character’s mob-boss uncle, from whom she is in hiding. This mystery is fast-paced and complex. The book has an intelligent and realistic romantic element, as well as rich subplots, but the main plot is definitely the mystery.I really liked the characters, who are believable and nuanced. Having worked in a law firm, I enjoyed the work dynamic, as well, though I’ve never known an attorney who would try to solve a murder mystery, or who would openly date opposing counsel. But that’s part of what makes this book fun.If you enjoy an intelligent mystery, I recommend this book.

A Slickly Written Cozy for the Digital Age By Debbie De Louise Reminiscent of classic who-dun-its, this virtual-age cozy puts a unique spin on a mystery involving a Neiman Marcus loafer as a clue in the murder of a QR software developer. Cleverly crafted characters include Boston attorney, Isis Ferrelli, aka Marjorie Gardens, who has tried to put her past and her mob-boss uncle behind. Uncle Lou has other plans. After putting her through law school, he now wants to collect by capitalizing on her legal expertise. I found Isis to be a strong-willed and well-developed protagonist. I also liked D.A. Jason Shahaman, affectionately coined “the shaman” by Isis, who works closely with her and becomes a love interest in the book.Richly depicted scenes from Boston to an estate in the Hamptons make you feel like you are on the spot following Isis’ trail trying to solve her client’s murder. Smartly executed plot devices, red herrings including the similar spelling of two key character names, add to the fun and suspense of this mystery.I can hardly wait for the second in the series and was especially pleased when the author made available a wonderful digital component that included audio and photos from the book with details that supplemented the wonderful text.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Dial Veenam for Great Writing By Christina Morgan Boston criminal defense attorney, Isis Ferrelli is the niece of a big time Mafioso. When Dial opens, Isis has just finished up opening statements in a criminal case brought against her client, a male nurse who has been accused of creating a QR code that somehow allows him to steal prescription drugs. On the side, Isis runs a website under an alias wherein she discusses and tries to solve major cases with her online subscribers, including her neighbor, a wannabe paralegal.Despite the fact that she’s tried to start a new life away from the criminal underworld that is her family, Isis cannot escape her past or her connection to her Uncle’s criminal underworld. Things get even more complicated when her client is murdered. Now Isis must work together with the prosecuting attorney, with home she’s also romantically linked, to figure out who not only framed her client, but had him murdered.Although I never fully grasped the technical aspects of the QR code, and despite the fact that there were some editing glitches, I really enjoyed this novel. Veeman’s descriptions of the Boston area, her vivid character development, short chapters, and attention to detail, make this novel a quick and easy read – the textbook definition of a “cozy mystery.” Not to mention, one that’s hard to put down. It’s a novel with a great, fast-paced whodunit plot that will appeal to men and women, young and old. As a veteran paralegal myself, I was impressed by Veenam’s grasp of legal terminology and procedure, which is often hard to find in novels such as this. A lot of people try to create a novel based on an attorney main character, but without the legal background that this author has, they usually sound contrived and over-researched. But not in Dial. Her main character is believable, likeable, and easy to root for.I would recommend this novel to fans of legal dramas, cozy mysteries, and suspenseful plots and feel good about doing so.
