On a hot July morning on Sweden’s idyllic vacation island of Sandhamn, a man takes his dog for a walk and makes a gruesome discovery: a body, tangled in fishing net, has washed ashore.

Police detective Thomas Andreasson is the first to arrive on the scene. Before long, he has identified the deceased as Krister Berggren, a bachelor from the mainland who has been missing for months. All signs point to an accident—until another brutalized corpse is found at the local bed-and-breakfast. But this time it is Berggren’s cousin, whom Thomas interviewed in Stockholm just days before.

As the island’s residents reel from the news, Thomas turns to his childhood friend, local lawyer Nora Linde. Together, they attempt to unravel the riddles left behind by these two mysterious outsiders—while trying to make sense of the difficult twists their own lives have taken since the shared summer days of their youth.

I tended to think in terms of “Scandinavian Noir”- grim, claustrophobic and cold. However, I’ve become quite fond of some over the past several months so was delighted to see a translation of Vivica Sten’s first Sandham mystery available as an Amazon Kindle First pick.I enjoyed “Still Waters” a lot. Not the least bit “Noir” (paranoid, seedy, dealing with corrupt officials, etc.), it was refreshing to read a modern true mystery novel that did not involve slavering serial killers murdering in bizarrely gruesome ways. Part traditional mystery, part police procedural, the book is well written with interesting, believable characters. I found the main detective, Thomas Andreasson, very good company with a strong “cast of supporting players”. Since this is a murder mystery of course there are murders :) But they are not excessively gruesome. There is little foul language and no graphic sex scenes. And although most of the book takes place on islands of the Swedish archipelago, events take place in summer months so no time was spent in snow and ice :) (For those geographically challenged as I am, the archipelago are the islands are off the east coast near Stockholm in the Baltic Sea.)On the downside, there were a few things that I found a bit tedious. First of all I thought the “who-done-it” was apparent fairly early on which made the “why-done-it” not too difficult to figure out. This made much of the investigation uninteresting. And I became irritated with the best friend’s marriage to a jerk which took up a lot of the story but since this is the first in a series, I suppose some foundation is necessary. Keeping track of Swedish names- particularly location names- was a little difficult. This may bother some US readers but I actually enjoyed it.I’m looking forward to the rest of the series becoming available in the U.S. I recommend this especially to those like me who are tired of the psycho serial killer stories that seem to have taken over the mystery field :)

A leisurely, charming book that's perfect reading for a day in bed By Whistlers Mom This entertaining, not-very-demanding book was the perfect companion for a day in bed drinking tea-with-honey and recovering from bronchitis. It's the perfect "beach read" since that's where much of the action takes place. The island of Sandhamn is a popular resort near Stockholm, Sweden. Like all neighborhoods with vacation homes, there's long-standing conflict between the "summer people" and the year-rounders. Now there's also conflict between families who've owned summer homes on the Island for generations and the wealthier new-comers who are snapping up old family homes from inheritors who can no longer afford to maintain them.Although this is a mystery, it won't have you on the edge of your seat. It's a leisurely, detailed (sometimes too detailed) look at life in modern Sweden with a couple of murders on the side. The charm lies in the characters, who are for the most part believable and likable. Thomas Andreasson is a cop with strong ties to the Island. As seems to be the norm for fictional detectives today, he has faced tragedy - in his case the death of a child from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and the subsequent break-up of his marriage. His childhood friend Nora is a lawyer married to a doctor with two young sons. While Thomas' life is a wreck, Nora's seem almost too good to be true and that proves to be the case.Sweden is frequently held up as a model country - a worker's paradise where there is no racism, sexism, or poverty and the government provides generously for all citizens. In gentle, but inexorable fashion, this author makes it clear that Sweden is no different from any other place. The workers may be entitled to lengthy Family Leave and four weeks of vacation, but their supervisors still have an eye on the bottom line. There are irritating in-laws, disappointing children, and harsh parents. Doctors are accustomed to being treated with deference at work and sometimes expect the same treatment from their families. Cops resent being thwarted by civilians and bossed around by bureaucrats with no knowledge of police proceedures. In the short summers, the weather is gorgeous, but there are mosquitoes. Swedish mosquitoes! Who knew? It's just a country with nice scenery and a preponderance of good-looking blondes and the same problems that all of us deal with. The absence of wide-spread poverty doesn't mean that people are satisfied with what they have. Two of the disaffected are cousins Krister and Kicki Berggren - both middle-aged, bitter, and alone in the world. He works in the liquor industry; she's a croupier in a casino. Both think they've gotten a bum deal in life and are looking for an easy way to even the score. "Sandhamn. That's where the money is." Kicki tells her friend enigmatically, but demanding money from strangers can be risky business as both cousins soon learn. While Thomas and his colleagues try to find a killer, Nora is facing a personal crisis of her own. A happy wife and mother, she's miserable at work. When she has a chance to improve her situation, she runs into the brick wall of gender expectations. She's sacrificed for her husband, but he feels no obligation to rearrange his life to accommodate her needs. Does she stay or go?Nora's enviable life looks to be taking a turn for the worse, but Thomas' life has no way to go but up. Immersing himself in his demanding job masks, but can't do away with the emptiness he feels. Still struggling with guilt over his child's death and his unresolved relationship with his former wife, he is none-the-less starting to long for companionship. Two attractive women enter his life. I figured he would end up with one of them, but toward the close of the book, he seems to be gravitating toward the (to me) less suitable one. She's also the more aggressive one, and Thomas is an unusually passive hero. Maybe that's his charm.I wasn't surprised to learn that this is the first book in a successful series. The author has a talent for creating characters that the reader quickly comes to care about, but it reads like a first book. There's a little too much of everything - details, plot twists, and local history. It also has the feel of a book that's intended to initiate a series. While the murders are solved, some of the personal issues are left hanging. It appears that Ms. Sten was trying to get us sufficiently invested in Thomas and Nora that we would want to read more about them. In my case, at least, she achieved her goal. It's leisurely until the last few chapters, but I was never tempted to give up. The characters of Thomas and Nora and their friends and colleagues and families are intriguing enough to keep me reading. I wanted to find out what happens to them. And I enjoyed learning about a country that seems at once exotic and very familiar. Human nature is the same all over the world and this author knows people and what makes them tick. Given the strength of the characters, I can see how this morphed into a popular television series. This book was translated from Swedish and it's a good, readable translation, aside from the irritating use of the phrase "get ahold." How did that get past the editor? I was amused to find myself imagining the characters speaking English with the charming, sing-song accent of Scandinavians. And I suspect that English-speaking Swedes use the British "biscuits" rather than the American "cookies." But overall, it's a good book. Not earth-shaking, but entertaining.

Although I read the whole book and found the story somewhat interesting, and the ending had a bit of suspense, I was unsatisfied when I finished.Somehow, characters in Swedish mysteries seem mostly to be a moody, depressed group. Here, the main investigator, Thomas, is a stereotypical depressed, beleaguered Stockholm detective. He spends a lot of emotional energy on his baby daughter, who died of SIDS, and his failed marriage, which fell apart when the grief and guilt of the couples' loss overwhelmed them. Thomas has a few other nagging problems: overwork, loneliness, and frustration over his delayed vacation. Two of the victims are late-middle-aged alcoholics, disappointed with their bleak and narrow lives. Thomas's long-time friend, Nora, juggles motherhood of two young boys, legal work, and a selfish, tyrannical husband.Partly as a result of all this angst, the plot is slow moving. In this case, the police are stumbling in the dark for the entire book. The personal problems likewise drag onward with little advancement during the book. I'm left with the impression that this long book is one episode in a (potentially) endless series of long books. On the plus side (for my tastes), there are no sexual scenes and the profanity is not too frequent. Although people get murdered, those events are treated from a distance and there is little on-stage violence.*** Spoiler warning ***The police never do solve the crime: even as the murderer confesses in her suicide note, the police are still without suspect(s) and motive.I didn't guess the murderer, and when it was revealed, I can see why. Although there was a carefully dropped clue along the way, the perpetrator was completely unbelievable. The motive, too, strained my credulity. There are two subplots that advance in tiny steps, and are completely unresolved when the book ends.*** End Spoiler ***Unless you are a patient, easy-to-please reader, I'd recommend that you read something else.

Sara Aldrete, a seemingly normal college student, and cult leader Adolfo de Jesús Constanzo were the Godfather and Godmother of the most sadistic serial killing cult in modern history. They formed a religious group/drug gang which terrorized a Mexican border town with ritual torture and human sacrifice. These sacrifices were undertaken in order to "bless" their illegal drug dealings in Matamoros, Mexico. The disappearance and death of Mark J. Kilroy during Spring break of 1989, however, would finally put an end to their reign of sadism and terror.

By Christine Sharpless I'm honestly kind of confused with this set. I purchased the stand alone of the first two books, of which I just re-read book one and then two. I am confused with this set because I decided to skim through just to get in the groove of the series again but this story seems to be written totally different than the one I have read twice. I personally don't find it nearly as funny as my stand alone and the details are very different. I will keep going to see how it plays out, but thus far, not nearly as impressed, sorry.

Full of comedy, adventure, snarky and smart characters along with the usual murder. The end is never who you think, although you will think you know and bam.....it changes. Northington * I was provided with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*Lawful Deception by author Pamela Samuels Young reads like an article ripped directly from today’s headlines; the subject matter is a well-known topic. Main character Bliss Fenton is beautiful and she knows it; in fact, one might call her a gold digger on steroids. Bliss uses what she's got to get what she wants. She has made a very lucrative career of becoming pregnant by ridiculously wealthy men, and then suing them for exorbitant amounts of child support. Her calculating approach is mind blowing, and I found myself quickly wanting to shout at some of the male characters in the book, “Noooooo, don’t fall for it!” There were several times I wanted to fling the book across the room, but I don't mistreat my books like that. Instead, I gave the character several serious eye-rolls, followed by a resounding, "hmmph!"The characters in the book are multi-dimensional, and the story is well written; although it flows easily, it is by no means predictable. Lawful Deception quickly pulls you in, and holds you hostage. I found myself so engaged in the book; I couldn’t put it down. I would definitely recommend this book to everyone who likes a book that stretches itself outside the box, one that draws you in, and when you’re done reading, you feel like you’ve been on the biggest roller coaster ride of your life.Kudos to Pamela Samuels Young, you’ve pushed the envelope once again!

Lawful Deception is the biggest pot of hot mess that I've seen in a mighty long time and I absolutely loved it!!! Where do I begin? Ok, Bliss Fenton is scandalous, greedy yet smart. This chick figures out a way to get what she wants in abundance plus some. The problem with greed is that it makes you cross lines that clearly shouldn't be approached. Hence the consequences. Enter Fletcher McClain, music Mogul and typical male. His affinity for the striking beauty Bliss lands him in a spot so tight that his attorney Vernetta Henderson almost had to grease him to try to get him out. This book would so greatly be served as a movie because this cast of lead and supporting characters played their parts to perfection. Some things I guessed correctly and on other parts I was dead wrong. This is a very interesting and entertaining mystery. Very well done! FIVE STARS!!!!

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Best of 2015 By Orsayor Simmons Bliss... Bliss... My Sweet Bliss...According to my dictionary, the word bliss means happiness & great joy. Bliss Fenton is the opposite of anything representing happiness or joy. She is all about greed, and she uses her womb to keep her pockets full. She sets her sights on wealthy men - get pregnant and collect a healthy amount of child support. So far she has been on easy street until she tries her luck with Music Mogul, Fletcher McClain. Fletcher McClain proves to be a hard nut to crack (no pun intended). He's not willing to give her what she wants without a fight. Has Bliss Fenton finally met her match? The book centers around Bliss Fenton but all of characters in the book are complex and well-developed. One of my favorites in the book was Special (yes that's her name) who's working on her detective license and looking for love from one singles website to the next. She meets a guy that could be the one, but he is keeping a secret from her. Will she be able to get over his secret?Lawful Deception is the type of book that's impossible to put down. Readers will savor every page of this novel. Pamela Sue Young has delivered one of the best books of 2015.

John Webster has seen the terrible things human beings can do. He's an experienced investigative journalist, recently returned from the war in Afghanistan. John was hell over there; he looked death straight in the face. He's glad to be back to the normalcy of his Vancouver home-that is until he realizes there is a war brewing in his own backyard and 'peace' is a word no longer spoken. John gets caught up in the battle between two of the most powerful and murderous criminal gangs in the city. Using what he learned on the foreign battlefields, he stays alive, despite the price on his head. The only way to save his own life is to find the man responsible for the brutal neighborhood bloodshed. When the police slap a subpoena on him, though, John finds his only solace on the streets. Suddenly, John is back in a war zone, fighting for his life. Will he be able to stop the bloodthirsty crime lords? The flashbacks from Afghanistan threaten to pull John into darkness. Soon the past and present collide, and he can't tell which why is up or down. The need for redemption may be stronger than the need for survival as John Webster finds himself on his most dangerous assignment yet.

A Thousand Bayonets (A John Webster Novel Book 1), by Joel Mark Harris

Review Prepare to go deep inside the forgotten, and often ignored, dark places of a modern city with Joel Mark Harris's A Thousand Bayonets. Harris uses journalist and ex-war correspondent, John Webster, to relentlessly pursue the major story of a gangland killing that rips open raw wounds in what is usually a beautiful city, Vancouver, BC.Webster's character becomes intertwined in not only the story of his life, but also trying to save his own life. Caught between the law and criminal elements circling around him, Webster has to navigate and gain trust from the seedier parts of society, while trying not to be sucked into its hypnotic lifestyle. The story is easy to fall into right from the start. Harris's character development is flawless.  The sub-characters are quickly introduced with very believable backgrounds that support the story to the end. Readers are taken on an emotional roller coaster ride meeting gritty characters from both sides of the tracks.  The author shows how Webster's past events have shaped him through experiences such as:  witnessing a massacre; flashbacks from the war; being an absent father; drinking excessively; and weighing whether the truth is worth it or not. Webster becomes the underdog who you will shake your head at and question his choices, but understand that these are the only choices he can make.Harris has developed a strong, believable character in Webster that I know is returning soon with a sequel. This book would make a great basis for a film noir. A Thousand Bayonets is one that we highly recommend to our readers.  -TBR topbookreviews.com

From the Author Except for a brief, fl eeting time in the mid-seventies, journalists have never been given the praise they warrant. Indeed, Janet Malcolm famously defamed the venerable profession in her book TheJournalist and the Murderer in the opening paragraph by saying "Every journalist who is not too stupid or too full of himself to notice what is going on knows that what he does is morally indefensible." It seems a common view held in today's day and age. Thankfully it has not always been so. Th e Founding Fathers of the United States recognized a free press as being not onlyimportant, but vital to the survival of a healthy and functional democracy. As lofty and ivory-tower-minded as that might sound, I challenge anybody to think of a more important constitutional right. It is a fact that so often and so tragically gets ignored, especially when the military try to bring democracy to countries that have only known iron-fi sted rule and propaganda. A free press is imperative for fledgling democracies, a fact Napoleon Bonaparte new so well--and used to his advantage and the world's detriment--when he became emperor of France. Journalists have done much to alter history. William Howard Russell, who reported on the Crimean War for the Times of London, changed how the British government treated its troops. Everybody knows how two young eager Washington Post reporters brought President Richard Nixon to his knees. It has saved lives as in 1984 in Ethiopia when a BBC documentary woke the world up to a colossal travesty. I, however, did not always understand the importance of journalism and how it impacts the way we think and live. As a young writer, I wondered how I could make a buck or two by putting words on paper. It was this pondering that led me to journalism school in the first place. I applied, wrote my entrance exam, but sadly did not get in. Oh well, I thought. Th ere are plenty of other writing jobs out there. I don't need journalism. But then I got a call one morning, mid-September in 2005 from aserious-sounding man asking me if I still would like to attend journalism school--or j-school as I learned to call it--albeit a bit late. Somebody had dropped out the fi rst week, and I was asked if I wanted to replace him. I often wonder what would have happened if I had not received thatcall. Although I was, of course, disappointed not making the cut initially, I wasn't overly distraught not to be chosen, and probably would have moved on to some other endeavour. I have to say, journalism school was the most thrilling, happiest, industrious time of my life. My instructors taught me that journalism educates, galvanizes, and informs us. It is the societal watch dog. And excellent journalism is even more imperative now, in our complicated, modern times, than ever before.Although I learned a lot from all my teachers, I am especially indebted to one: Ross Howard, who continues to train journalists in war-torn countries such as Rwanda, Cambodia, Ski Lanka, and Nepal. He, more than anybody, is the person who inspired me to write this novel.JMHVancouver, BCJune 13, 2011

I couldn't put this book down. I found the main character John to be an intriguing well-developed character. The plot was fully engaging with many twists and turns that keep you guessing. And finally, for me - being a resident of Vancouver - it was so much fun reading about various neighborhoods and landmarks in Metro Vancouver. These were spot-on!At the end of the day, this is a great page-turner in the thriller genre and I would read other novels by the same author.

By DWD's Reviews Published in 2011 by iUniverseJoel Mark Harris is a young Canadian journalist and new novel writer. The advice always given to writers is to "write what you know" so Harris has done that - the main character of this novel is John Webster, an experienced investigative journalist for a Vancouver newspaper. He carries physical and emotional battle scars from covering the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. He is too old to start a blog to promote his articles and he is definitely too experienced to be playing fast and loose with the mob as the bullets start to fly and the bodies start to fall. But, he does, for reasons he doesn't quite understand his whole life has fallen apart since his horrible experiences in the war zones and he seems driven to push away his son and his ex-wife and take on ever more dangerous assignments at home. The book begins with Webster listening in on a clandestine meeting of mobster leaders in a barn. The meeting becomes a crime scene as professional assassins shoot everyone. Webster lies still and goes unnoticed but his stories quickly grab the attention of a casino boss, mobsters and the local police (rumor has it some have been bought off) as he tries to figure out who ordered the murders and why before he is arrested or, even worse, killed.Nice early work by a young author. Great at setting a mood and describing scenes. I have never been to Vancouver but I felt as though I had a sense of its gritty underside.I received this book in a contest from an online giveaway. The review is an honest assessment of the book.

Ruiz John Webster is a war-time journalist who has returned to his native Canada thinking to take on more tame assignments. The gangs of Vancouver have no intention of making his life that easy, though, and soon Webster finds himself embroiled in a murder mystery that threatens his life and maybe even the lives of those he loves. As dire as his circumstances are, he finds he has trouble focusing on them as the rest of his life continues to unravel. Grasping for straws, he drinks too much and seeks romance in unsuitable women. He'll have to pull it together to survive his latest story and stay on the payroll and on this side of the grave.Joel Mark Harris gives us a complex protagonist in John Webster - a man who is interesting even when he is annoying. The battle lines are clearly drawn in this novel of violence hidden beneath a civilized city exterior, and the stage is well-set for a showdown. You'll want to stick around to see how this plays out. Flashbacks of war are mixed in with the present gang troubles to show parallels, and the author's investigation of these similarities is intriguing.I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads.
