“I cannot understand why Mr. Bechcombe apparently offered no resistance. His hand-bell, his speaking-tube, the telephone—all were close at hand. It looks as though he had recognized his assassin and had no fear of him.”The corner house of Crow’s Inn Square was the most dignified set of solicitors’ chambers imaginable. But this monument to law and order nonetheless becomes the scene of murder - when the distinguished lawyer Mr. Bechcombe, despite giving strict instructions not to be disturbed, is strangled in his own office.Inspector Furnival of Scotland Yard has to wrestle with fiendish clues, unearth priceless gems and tangle with a dangerous gang before he can solve this case, his third and final golden age mystery. Originally published in 1927, this new edition is the first printed in over 80 years, and features an introduction by crime fiction historian Curtis Evans.“What could be better to whet the appetite of the mystery-loving reader? A capital piece of work... exactly the sort of mystery story that everyone is asking for and will eagerly devour.” Sketch

I wish she had lived long enough to write more. She was truly a treasure. As with the other works of Anne Hynes, this was a complex plot and kept me guessing until the end. I highly recommend this book and the series. I am already on the next book.

Fast-rising FBI agent Thaddeus Pennock loves to catch bad guys and beautiful women but never mixes the two -- until now. Pennock and his savvy partner investigate a brutal drive-by shooting that has the earmarks of a mob hit. A fiery Congresswoman publicly accuses a secretive businessman of being a drug lord and the mastermind of the murder. Pennock must penetrate the facades of these two powerful enemies who manipulate events to influence his investigation and bring each other down. The only thing harder for Pennock than discovering who ordered the hit is preventing the killer from striking again. A master at hiding in plain sight and fueled by a singular vengeance, the killer forges a bloody trail over two continents, stalking the murder victim’s former lover, a strong-willed Argentinian beauty who draws Pennock in up to his heart. The plot races from the sinister world of organized crime in Philadelphia to dirty DC politics and from deadly deception in Buenos Aires to a murderous ambush in the rolling hills of Pennsylvania horse country, with provocative characters and unexpected twists at every turn.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Thad Pennock will be the Next Super FBI Agent By Randy Huge fan of Lee Child's Jack Reacher books, Vince Flynn's Mitch Robie, etc and this book took hold right away and I could not put it down. Read it in two days, and loved it from beginning (page 2) and all the way to the thrilling chase scene and joust at the end. Characters were well developed and the story line was easy to follow with many twists and turns. Kept me intrigued the entire time and will recommend this to friends, and the wife has already asked to read it.

The characters were interesting and well developed. Also, a FUN read with many unexpected twists and turns. The authors love of horses and the Pennsylvania countryside came through and makes you want to look for the places described in the book. Can see a sequel on the horizon.

By Molly O From the evocative cover to the last page (which by the way hints at more adventure ahead), Necessary Vengeance is a fast-paced pleasure. Following FBI agent Thaddeus Pennock is a riveting thrill allowing us inside the minds of the pursuer and the pursued. I love a plot that draws the reader in with seeming predictability only to outsmart us and dash our pet theories of what will happen next. This one did it more than once. Even more enticing for this reader were the well-delineated and varied characters. Organically they spring from the setting and situation whether it is the formidable Congresswoman heating up the political dimensions of the plot, Senorita Loperena, like her home all granite and glass, or Thad himself whose rare self-knowledge and obvious appreciation of women make him both tough and vulnerable. All things human are within the writer’s scope - arrogance, ambition, misogyny, shame, obsession, compassion. He deftly draws on these and more to uncover motivations, reveal weakness, inspire fear and push the plot forward to its inevitable triangular trap. Like the fox hunts alluded to by Thaddeus, this book is more than the sum of its parts. It is an absorbing, multi -layered experience in a lush landscape in which we are swept along in pursuit of a most unpredictable and crafty “prey.” Cheers to a wonderful, insightful writer, Clipper Lamotte!
