No he leído la versión en inglés. Este es uno de los mejores libros que he leído (ya sea de misterio o de otro tipo) por lo complicado de la trama, su excelente narración y el muy inesperado final. Todo comienza con una restauradora de arte que recibe un cuadro, el cual muestra a una pareja jugando al ajedrez, que será vendido en una subasta; y al limpiarlo, descubre una inscripción bajo una capa mas reciente de pintura. A continuación asesinan a su ex-novio y la única pista que se encuentra en la escena del crimen es una movida de ajedrez que continúa la partida del cuadro. La historia y la fantasía se mezclan maravillosamente en este libro, creando un ambiente de incertidumbre tan creible, que cuesta trabajo dejar de leer.This review is for the book in spanish. I haven't read the english version. This is one of the best books I have read (mystery or other), because of it's plot twists, excellent writting (I hope that is the right word) and truly unexpected end. It all begins when a young restorer receives a painting portraying a couple playing a game of chess. She cleans the painting and finds a hidden message under a layer of paint. Next thing she knows, her ex-boyfriend is dead and the only clue left in the murder scene is a "chess move" that continues the game in her painting. History and fantasy blends in this book creating a sense of unease so strong that I couldn't keep from reading.

Sus novelas, para mi gusto, van más allá de lo espectacular y cautivante. Desde la primera oración te quedas prisionero de este narrador maestro. Cuando empiezo a leer, pocas cosas hay en el mundo capaces de hacerme soltar el libro. Leí la Tabla de Flandes de principio a fin, sin parar. Literalmente. Las historias de este genio español son tales que es como comer un manjar tan exquisito que quisieras que nunca acabe. No voy a contar aquí de qué se trata el libro. Baste decir que es una lectura maravillosa, sorpresiva y que lleva el arte de la narración a un nivel de éxtasis y suspenso para el lector que sólo puedes encontrar en autores sobrehumanos como Dumas, Julio Verne, Victor Hugo y Mark Twain. Aparte de La Tabla de Flandes, recomiendo intensamente la lectura de La Carta Esférica, La Piel del Tambor, El Club Dumas, El Maestro de Esgrima y la "atípica" (dentro del universo Perez-Revertiano) trilogía del Capitán Alatriste. Recomiendo este libro (y todas las novelas del autor) sin absolutamente ninguna reserva.

Creo que esa fue la intención del autor. La narración es tan perfecta, las descripciones de los personajes, tan real y detallada, la trama es tan interesante y apasionada...que inevitablemente se siente todo el libro como si estuviese en un escenario. Excelente historia que combina el humor negro con crímenes, arte y el ingenio del ajedrez como única posibilidad para descubrir al asesino. Con una pintura flamenca y su ingenua restauradora comienza la acción que desencadenará un inesperado final.

About the Author

Annie Haynes was born in 1865, the daughter of an ironmonger. By the first decade of the twentieth century she lived in London and moved in literary and early feminist circles. Her first crime novel, The Bungalow Mystery, appeared in 1923, and another nine mysteries were published before her untimely death in 1929. Who Killed Charmian Karslake? appeared posthumously, and a further partially-finished work, The Crystal Beads Murder, was completed with the assistance of an unknown fellow writer, and published in 1930.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. nothing like what the Misses Christie and Sayers were turning out By drkhimxz Even in the 1929's much of the flavor and structure of the book was hackneyed, nothing like what the Misses Christie and Sayers were turning out, much less the somewhat later mistresses of the Classic British Mystery. Nonetheless, the hackneyed has a reason for persistence, it does touch some of the buttons of sentiment residing in many readers. For that reason, and for its value as an example of what many writers of her day were turning out, it is something that might be of interest to readers who like to get out of their time period now and again. It is easily read, simple to follow, and quick reading so, as (at the moment) an inexpensive choice at a buck, it might be the choice for that lull period many of us like between more serious efforts.The story has a classic structure. Girl loves young doctor, for reasons that would be a spoiler, girl loses young doctor and, then.....At same time, older man, girl's godfather, loves girl, when girl's father murdered, becomes her Guardian and Trustee, and, then.... Master police detective enters onto the scene, senses likely suspect might not be guilty, and........There is, of course, some interesting meat put upon these bones which, as I have suggested, can make the book worth looking at, despite its weaknesses. In mystery books advertisements and reviews of a generation (and more) ago, this is of the 'Damsel in Distress' genre.

He's accidentally come across evidence of a crime that was never suspected, let alone investigated. Should he tell the police? Even though the murder was long ago, and the murderer has long since become a good person? Before he can make a decision, the doctor himself is murdered.Dr. Bastow's pretty daughter Hilary and his crippled son Fee are looked after by their godfather, who is in love with Hilary, who is in love with a struggling young doctor. The cast of characters also includes a colorful old maid, Aunt Lavinia, who is fond of the young people. She was quite a flirt in her youth and likes to hint at her escapades. Full of good intentions and bad advice, this outspoken aunt is a very fun character.The investigator, Inspector Stoddart, is by contrast dull and undistinguished. But he does have a nose for clues. To watch him go over surfaces meticulously with a tiny microscope is a treat. A second murder follows the murder of the doctor, so the colorless inspector gets to work both cases in the same thoroughgoing style. One clue that turns up is a fake beard.The plot is seeded with suspicious characters-- a parlor maid who disappears after the doctor's murder, a downtrodden female secretary who becomes flashy and well heeled just after the murder, and a colleague of Doctor Bastow who unaccountably shaves his dark beard.I loved this little Golden Age mystery, even though I guessed whodunit. The women are dressed and coiffed in the fashion of the twenties, but there's a feeling of Victorian melodrama in the intricate puzzle plot. Everything by Annie Hayes is now on my wish list.

An OK Read, Despite Grammatical Issues By Lupine Smile I was given an electronic copy by Random House Publishing Group: Alibi and NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.The Kill Box is the third book in the series featuring Private Investigator Jamie Sinclair. With the successful completion of an undercover operation, Jamie goes home to Lieutenant Colonel Adam Barrett, whom she met on a previous mission. Being injured while saving her life, Adam agrees to convalesce at her house. With a promising relationship between them, everything grinds to a halt when an old high school friend demands Adam's help. Three days later...Having not read the other books in the series did not seem to matter, as enough of the backstory is told at the beginning. The biggest problem that I had with The Kill Box were the multiple errors: misspellings, as well as synonyms written attached to each other, as if the writer was deciding between them and forgot to remove one. All errors should have been fixed by spell check software and hopefully a good editing will be sufficient. It does take away from the flow of the novel, which was already paced on the slower side. Adam's past history is the focus of this book, so it really does not provide much character development for Jamie. I had high hopes for The Kill Box, but would put this into the not so memorable category.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher as a part of a book tour for a fair and honest review and rated this 4.5 out of 5 Stars.A military cop with dark secrets, a private investigator in love with him and a twenty year old unsolved rape take center stage in The Kill Box by Nichole Christoff, the third Jamie Sinclair novel. Set in the colorful countryside of upstate New York, Ms. Christoff takes us on a thrilling adventure as Jamie Sinclair puts her life on the line for Adam Barrett, the man who has had her back through several adventures and occupies her romantic dreams. If you like colorful characters, small town drama, action and adventure with a touch of romance, then you’re going to want to pick up a copy of this book.Finishing her latest case, Jamie Sinclair can’t wait to get home to her houseguest and townhouse. Finally free to spend time with Adam Barrett, a military cop wounded saving her life, and planning to get to know him up close and personal, Jamie is shocked when a man, who appears to be strung out, takes Adam’s private nurse hostage and breaks into her house. When Adam agrees to help the man save a mutual friend and takes off without explanation, Jamie finds herself alone and unsure about the man she thought she knew. And when she gets a call from his grandmother asking her to help him, Jamie has to decide just how far she’s willing to go to save Adam from events in his past that could end up burying them both.Ms. Christoff does a good job as she continues to develop both Jamie and Adam’s characters. A fan of both of them, I have to admit that I was a little surprised by Adam’s behavior at the start of this installment; he was more of an alpha-hole than an alpha-hero like he’s been in the previous two installments. He’s got unresolved emotional issues from his childhood that threaten to destroy the man Jamie knows. I continued to root for Jamie as she stood her ground and didn’t let his stubbornness get in the way of doing what she needed to do, stand by her man. Continuing to prove that a smart woman with good training is as capable, if not more, than a man at conducting investigations, Jamie is like a dog with a bone as she tackles small town secrets and deals with a body count that begins to rise just as she hits town.The mystery of Adam’s past, who raped a 14 year old girl over twenty years ago, and who is killing people now is very well done. The story takes several twists and turns and Jamie finds herself in danger more than once! As if Jamie’s hands aren’t already full, Ms. Christoff ups the ante by bringing the DEA into the picture as they investigate the small town and its connection to illegal drugs. And adding a touch of romantic tension, the head DEA agent just happens to have the hots for Jamie, who he’s worked with before.Will Jamie discover who is framed Adam twenty years ago for a crime he didn’t commit? Will she and Adam survive her investigation into the past? And what will happen to their almost relationship when the investigation is complete? You’ll have to read The Kill Box to find out, I really enjoyed it and can’t wait to see what kind of trouble Jamie gets into next.

Suspense-Filled By Sally912 Jamie Sinclair, a private investigator and Adam Barnett (a military police officer) have plans to spend the weekend in wine country…until a strung-out soldier, Vance McCabe, forces his way into her home taking Adam’s private nurse, Mrs. Montgomery, as hostage. Although Jamie has never seen this man before Adam knows him well. When Vance says one word to Adam, he packs his duffle bag leaving Jamie to wonder what just happened. Three days after Adam leaves with Vance, Jamie receives a phone call from Miranda Barrett, Adam’s grandmother, begging her to come to Fallowfield and help her grandson…because he is in jail.Although this is the third book in the Jamie Sinclair series, you do not need to read the other two in order to understand this book, however you will want to go back and read them. This is a fast-paced novel that will capture your attention from the first page. The twists, turns and suspense will keep you sitting on the edge of your seat with bated breath to the very end. If you love suspense-filled novels this will be a must-read. Although the plot has a gripping story line and the characters are well developed it didn’t quite seem to be a thriller to me. However it was a great book and I for one can’t wait for the next in the series. From the Author In June 2010 I received a gift from my husband - a pretty, pink laptop. My first personal computer. On Saturday morning I sat on the swing in the yard and began to write. I was hoping to fill an entire page with thoughts. Maybe even a story would come out of it. After seven pages I was hoping for ten, and after thirty I was hoping for a hundred. The story behind the story is an experience in itself... I imagined characters and discovered that they exist in reality, described places before I even visited them and told about events which turned out to be true. It turns out that I was merely there to gather them into one imaginary plot, as if the events have combined to let me know that the book should be written. This was the beginning of a beautiful friendship with words. Since then I went through three laptops and three finished books.

It is a fairly long book on my kindle at almost 450 pages. Currently the book is available on readers and in paperback. I am hoping this is the first book of a series because it is a good read and has left some openings to continue the story.The story follows a very fluent plot that will keep your attention through out the book as you are reading it. There are not really any lull parts in the book at all. The only lulls barely give you enough time to catch your breath and it is off again so to me they are not really lulls since they are very rare and short.This story has a lot of twists and turns as you are reading. It has deception, adultry, revenge, and lots of action. The story centers around a Israli family doing business with the Russian Mafia. The death of her husband and son from these dealings with an adultry twist. Then seeking revenge and training to gain this revenge upon the ones that took her family. Enough of the story now, that is a little bit of a teaser of what is to come from the book.If you are looking for a book that is a good read this is one to consider. It will hold your attention specially if you like action and suspense stories. I was offered the book at a discount for an honest, unbiased review.Diamond smugglers, KGB, Paris, Israel, secret missions, and some sex thrown in.Gabi is a lonely widow, out for revenge. She is an art dealer. Pierre is a mentor and good friend. Gabi's husband (a diamond trader) and son are killed by a diamond smuggler, that Gabi has a one night stand with. Gabi trains with Guy to get revenge on the diamond smuggler. You learn much later in the story that Gabi befriends Natalia (diamond smuggler's wife and KGB). Guy has an on and off relationship with another woman ( Hadas) while sleeping with and training Gabi.I really liked the idea behind this story but I hated Gabi's relationship with Guy and the end left me with a lot of loose ends. Gabi gets her revenge but, does she move in with Pierre? Does Guy really marry Hadas or get back together with Gabi?I am hoping that the author will write a sequel to this book. I loved the story, but I was left wanting more.

It was as though a high-schooler had to turn in something so submitted a first rough draft. The plot had a lot of potential, but the book needed a lot of work before it was published.

TerePure propaganda By donnajim Started out with an interesting plot but soon degenerated into pure propaganda with so much political bias it was really hard to wade thru. Too bad, I think the characters were just starting to look interesting when the politics took over

If you enjoy espionage/thrillers By John Smartly plotted and very suspenseful. despite being over 400 pages, it reads quickly and is hard to put down. (I stayed up very late a few nights.) If you are into politics or finance/hedge funds, this is a great book. If you enjoy espionage/thrillers, it's got a lot of that too. The story is thought-provoking and enjoyable to read. Without spoiling anything, it involves terrorist attacks and CIA/special forces. I look forward to his next book!

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. One for Fox News lovers By L. Alfaro Dude, we get it. This is everything the right-wingers stand for: Unions bad, wanton capitalism good. There's an evil Secretary of State who is clearly supposed to be Hilary Clinton. I'm sure the Bill O'Reillys and Rush Limbaughs of the world would love this book, but I personally could've done without the unnamed-Presdident-who-is-clearly-Obama being involved in a meth-fueled gay orgy.
