Elite combat veteran Jesse Yates is used to things being simple: find the enemy and kill him. But when his country opts out of the fight, Yates opts out of the military. Now he just wants to be a regular guy and fit back into society. But he’s not a regular guy, and this is America, 2016, overregulated and stressed out, where every act seems to involve a risky set of consequences. Jesse needs a job after quickly washing out as a trucker, and Palm Court Detectives can provide the two things he wants more than anything right now—a chance for the occasional thrill and a close-knit team like the ones he always had in the military. Yates could have picked a better first assignment than driving an 18-wheeler again to draw out hijackers, but he’s not the kind of guy who questions his marching orders. Devotion to duty and supreme confidence soon put the rookie private eye in the middle of a turf war between hijackers who he likes, outlaw bikers who like him (or what he can do for them) and a drug cartel renegade with a severe Jesse Yates problem. He gets drawn into a toxic plot so fast and so deep that every move he makes is a crap shoot, based on pure instinct. When Yates finds himself once again at death’s door but this time deeply involved in a conspiracy with potential for massive civilian casualties, he’s going to have to make one more precise decision and fall back hard on his extreme training and lethal skills. But in this fight, for the first time, Jesse Yates is on his own. Get on board at the beginning of this brand new crime thriller series, featuring the Palm Court Detectives, a skyrocketing new agency run by laicized Jesuit priest Ernie Donovan in a refashioned vintage motel in Mobile, Alabama.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I think this is a good intro to a new series By Stephen L. Brayton PlotFresh out of the military and after a short stint as a truck driver, Jesse Yates joins Palm Court Detectives. His first assignment: figure out who's hijacking trucks for the cargo. Yates goes undercover but soon things turn serious and he finds himself delivering a cargo of death.I think this is a good intro to a new series. The plot holds it own for the most part, is well thought out with only a few glitches here and there.CharactersJesse Yates: former Navy SEAL, former Marine, former truck driver, private detective, knows martial arts, former smoker, has a sister, dad was a paratrooperErnie Donovan: runs Palm Court Detectives, priest, 50s, black hairSheila: former actress, P.I. who works for DonovanJimmie Flynn: owns Flynn Transportation, almost 50, tad portly, brown hair, married, 2 sons, has a brotherDonna Grey: dark hair, ponytail, former Army, dad was a Marine, works at a bowling alleyThere are a bunch of baddies and a couple are pretty involved. There are also some bit federal players I would have liked to have seen in more than one chapter. This book dealt mostly with Yates but I would like to have seen the other members of the PCD involved more. Maybe in future stories.DialoguePretty good voices. Yates tends to be hesitant a lot, asking questions, and almost overboard with his doubts and fears. The grit and character to have become a SEAL doesn't hold over here in the detective world except in the action scenes.WritingSome profanity, but not a lot.Speaking of actions scenes, they're tight and well coordinated. The author shows his knowledge of trucking and fighting. There were some slow parts building up to the climax and this is a short (er) story than a lot of mysteries. For instance, I thought there was too much back and forth between Yates and the bad guys in the final part of the book. Too much arguing.I mentioned the feds. I wold have liked to have seen them again at the end, just to wrap it up with their part of the whole story.Shorter meant a faster read.Again, the rank I give does not mean I didn't like it. I think this series has a lot of potential and this fills a good niche in the mystery genre. My Rank:Green Belt

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great read By Dustin This book definitely had some exciting moments, but I was also intrigued by the whole Palm Court Detectives scenario—a brand new, fast growing agency run by a former priest who has the whole community in the palm of his hand because people feel guilty for not supporting him when he was falsely accused and then exonerated. Father Ernie Donavon is not above playing that guilt for all it’s worth and extracting favors from important people. The Palm Court gang also includes a middle aged police detective who was also falsely accused and then proved innocent (with Donavon’s help), an investigative reporter who lost his job and couldn’t get a new one because he was considered obese and a drag on his newspaper’s medical insurance program, an actress who got burned out in New York, and another young woman who got burned out as a paralegal in a high powered Atlanta law firm. They all live in a refashioned vintage motel, that Donavon, who comes from old money, made luxurious on the inside while keeping its retro motel exterior. This is an interesting situation that bodes well for future stories. They’re even getting a chef.Best of all is Jesse Yates, Donavon’s newly hired “tough guy.” He’s a former Navy SEAL with a lot of martial arts skills and combat experience (along with his share of issues) but is a fish out of water as a civilian and as a rookie detective. This is a good first book of what has the potential to be a very interesting series. I’m looking forward to the next one.

You've come to the right place!Jesse Yates, a man just out of the military is looking for his place in the world. He gets a long haul truck driving job, but to a man who has fought in wars, this job is just way too peaceful. But then a job offer comes along that gets his blood pumping again ... working for the Palm Court Detective Agency. And lo and behold his first assignment is .... undercover as a truck driver. There have been a rash of truck heists and he finds himself involved with the hijackers, a Mexican drug cartel and outlaw bikers.I really like Jesse! He has so much confidence in himself and his abilities to take on anything that comes his way. I like that he misses the men who fought along side of him and is looking for that kind of closeness with his new colleagues. This is the beginning of a new series. From the book blurb ... a skyrocketing new agency run by laicized Jesuit priest Ernie Donovan in a refashioned vintage motel in Mobile, Alabama.I am looking forward to following this series ... I like the thought of watching Jesse grow into a 4-star investigator. Many thanks to the author and to Word Slinger Publicity who furnished an ARC in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.

In the span of a few days, six tons of lithium-6 are stolen in Japan, and 180 grams of plutonium vanish in France. Word of these crimes quickly reaches Colonel Kenneth Andrews at the US Nuclear Terrorism Unit. He mobilizes the best team in nuclear defense, including special agents—and couple—Lauri Nurmi and Alice Donovan.

As this secret task force sets out to find the contraband elements, they begin to fear that someone is developing a doomsday weapon. Breeder reactors are being installed around the world to provide clean energy, but they also present risks: every shipment of fuel to a nuclear power station gives terrorists an opportunity to create a nuclear weapon. When Lauri and Alice realize that they have a global conflict on their hands, one in which the definition of terrorist is a moving target, they’ll put their relationship—and their lives—in jeopardy to venture headfirst toward a new and dangerous front line. But in this game of nuclear reaction, what holds the most power to destroy the world as we know it—the weapon itself or the fear it inspires?

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Proclaimed Innocence By You can call me Lynn This book is a mixture of Military, Police Procedural, and Mystery/Thriller genres.Sgt. Billy Williams, one of Sgt. Major Crane's subordinates, is involved with an arrest of a young man, Leroy. Leroy is found guilty and sent to Her Majesty's Young Offenders Institute where he meets Emma Harrison. Emma arranges for Leroy to be sent to Dartmoor when he turns 21. Leroy is not happy with this and fights the transfer and shouts his innocence. For personal reasons, Emma feels compelled to look into his case. The events that follow leads the reader, Emma, Billy and a few others on a not so merry chase.I really enjoyed the story, it kept me reading trying to figure out if Leroy was innocent and framed or did he have a black-out and didn't recall the deed. I won't tell you the results, I will tell you that a whole lot of emotions are rolled out. I also thought was interesting how past events and current events alternated.Warning: This book is for Mature Audiences due to Violence, Adult Language, and borderline sexual situations.Disclaimer: Ms. Cartmell had a give-away for would be reviewers, so I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review..

By CP Disclaimer: I received a free ebook copy in exchange for an honest review. My review: I’m a huge fan of mysteries, so when I was offered the chance to read this I didn’t hesitate. I enjoyed the characters, and Leroy was my favorite despite the times he drove me a little crazy. To be honest, his reactions were understandable from a guy who’s had everything he loved pulled out from under him multiple times.I thought the arc between Billy and Emma was interesting and I’m curious to see how it works in the future. While having a mutual history isn’t a new plot/character device, this one promises to be full of spice with both being similar enough to spark a few passionate fights between them in the future. It’s this passion that helps add depth to the story and gave me a reason to cheer each of them on at various points. While the story flowed well, it did take some adjustment time for me to become accustomed to the bouncing back and forth in time periods for the first half of the book. That doesn’t mean it’s wrong, it was just a little jostling for me, but once I grew used to it, it was fine. There was one part near the end where I had to scratch my head, but I chalked it up to a mistake by the police (I don’t want to say more as it’s a potential spoiler). It was an unnerving element that I’m sure happens in the real world at times, so take my critism with a grain of salt.Overall, I enjoyed the book and look forward to checking out other works by the author.

By Diane Rapp Following a harrowing experience as a hostage on a train, Emma Harrison has changed careers and grown into an adult. That doesn't mean there aren't challenges for her to overcome in her new job in the prison system. Emma's empathy for a young prisoner named Leroy makes her take risks that she might regret. Leroy claims he didn't commit the murder that landed him in a young offenders facility, and Emma works to help him accept his transfer to an adult facility when he reaches the age of 21. Dropping too much information about herself, Emma gets embroiled into his desperate escape and tries to arrange for a peaceful outcome. The only difficulty I had with this book was the switching between time periods. If felt confusing at times, but if a reader is patient all the facts are laid out and the story progresses with a more rapid pace. The relationship between Emma and Billy progresses throughout the novel and the reader learns enough about their previous problems during the train hijacking that this can be read as a stand-alone novel. This author scrupulously gives her readers both sides of the story so that we can understand that not everything is black and white.I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. I recommend the book highly.

Careful, exacting and ruthless, Wyatt is a consummate criminal and a solitary giant in Australian crime writing. This time it’s a payroll and bank run in the north of South Australia, an outpost town suddenly transformed by a pipeline construction project that brings petty crime, prostitution—and opportunity. It’s a town with its own secrets and Wyatt isn’t quick to trust at the best of times. But he’s on the run and he can’t afford to be choosy. This is another masterpiece of orchestration and unravelling, anchored by an unforgettable ticking-clock sequence that will keep you swiping those pages. Fans of Garry Disher’s other writing may recognise the landscape and some of the place names of The Sunken Road, and fans of noir and hard-boiled fiction will find a fascinating extension of the genre.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Westlake worthy By Orrin C. Judd Despite all the intellectual disdain for American culture, there are a number of great literary genres that are distinctly American, among them the hard-boiled detective and crime noir story. In fact, it seems not too much of a stretch to say that the prose and story-telling styles of Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler were as influential, or more so, than those of any of the more high-toned literary icons of the 20th Century, with the added distinction that folks who tried to like them actually produced readable books, while those who tried to write like Joyce, Woolf, and Faulkner generally produced drek.Strangely enough though, two of the best current practitioners in these genres are Australian. The Cliff Hardy series by Peter Corris is among the select company of great homages to Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe, while the Wyatt novels by Garry Disher are probably the best crime series since Donald Westlake's Parker books (written under the pseudonym of Richard Stark) of thirty and forty years ago. From the one word name of the antihero to the problems with the "Outfit" (organized crime), the Wyatt stories actually quite resemble Westlake's.Here's Disher's description of his protagonist : Wyatt was forty years old. Respectable men his age were marking time until their retirement. The hard men his age were dead or in gaol. Wyatt was different. He'd never been burdened by doubt, uncertainty or personal ties. He worked from an emotionless base. He could cut to the essentials of a job and stamp his cold hard style on it.He needs to be cold and hard in this, his second, caper, as he's being hunted by the Outfit after crossing them up in the first book; he's trying to pull a payroll job in the unfamiliar surroundings of Belcowie, three hours north of Adelaide; and he's got untested partners, including a woman, violating one of his own rules. The language is terse, the action brisk and brutal, and the book terrific. Cover blurbs for such novels always refer to them as realistic. I suspect the opposite is actually true. Thankfully there aren't many criminals as smart and emotionless as Wyatt, otherwise we'd all be in trouble.GRADE : A

Mystery called Paydirt By Carol King Speaking as an American who has lived in Australia for 2 years, I can say this is authentic and I felt as if I were Down Under with these pure Australian characters, the town, and scenes along the highways. This adventure mystery kept me cheering for the main character and feeling a part of it, as it quickly kept revealing clue after clue. Americans will have no trouble understanding the book as there is no obscure Australian terminology, AKA Aussie slang. Compare this mystery to Garry Disher's "Kickback" written in 1991.

La muerte no es siempre el final. Londres.

The call of the night is rising . . . Since the beginning, when the first skin walker ancestors--the lupines--shed their skins and transformed from wolves into men, shifters have roamed the earth as both man and wolf. As the first people, they watched the evolution of humankind and were soon named the guardians of earth and the watchers of mankind. But the shifters soon discovered they shared something in common with humankind: an infinity for both good and evil and a growing desire to claim the hearts of the sons and daughters of human men. Join the cast of characters of Kensington Cove as they forge forward, securing a place in the world and staking a claim to their one true soul mate.

I liked all the characters in each book, but the flow was very disjointed. Grammer and typos made it hard to read. The author went from first to third person, sometimes very confusing. Each book seemed rushed, ending with no real closure. I would really like to see theauthor put all her effort into one book, I think it could be a good one.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Welcome to Kensington Cove By Laura Furuta To anyone who loves wolf shifters or if you are looking at this book wondering if you should read this set of books, I have 2 words. Read it!! There are 6 stories in one, the stories are about a town called Kensington Cove which has quite a few wolf clans. The town also has witches and other magical beings. The characters overlap so when reading one story you find characters from another story. The main theme of each story is finding a mate, can you say steamy romance, however there is also something else happening in this magical town which you get clues of in each story. I loved this 6 story set. Not only the characters but the storyline as well. I would highly recommend this book! I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
