By Kathy Messano I have read all the books up to Cast Iron Cover-up and I have to say I found this book to be slow compared to the other ones. There wasn't enough of a story or action in this book to keep me from putting the book down. Normally I read a book in a day or two; this book took me several weeks to read. I was disappointed in this book because the first two books were great. Those first two books I couldn't put down.I do recommend this series and I will be buying the next book in this series.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A great who done it By E. Roosevelt This book kept me guessing until the very end. I really enjoyed reading this book, but I have realised it was the last of a three book series. Oops! Have no problem recommending to everyone.

“Do you think you know what your own mother might do? The Survivors is an up-close-and-personal mystery—the best suspense I’ve read this year. It will haunt you.” —DIANA GABALDON, #1 New York Times–bestselling author of the Outlander seriesPsychologist Cal Henderson has a successful practice in Washington, DC, and big plans for the future. But he can’t escape a terrible secret. When he was a boy, his mother murdered his father and two brothers and severely wounded Cal’s best friend, Scottie Glass. Desperate to keep the nightmare at bay, Cal has turned his back on everything that happened that night. On the twenty-fifth anniversary of the killings, Scottie shows up at Cal’s office—edgy, paranoid, but somehow still the loveable kid he once was. Though their lives have taken very different paths, they both believe Cal’s mother couldn’t have been a murderer. She loved them too much, no matter what dark place she found herself in. They set off to dig up the real story. Cal uncovers one shocking secret after another about his family.  The trail leads to a shady defense contractor, a scheming US Attorney, and, ultimately a billionaire with the kind of power and connections that can only be found in Washington.  But Cal is paying a price.  The memories he has avoided for so long have come flooding back, sending him into a tailspin from which he may never recover.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Swing and a miss. By Patrick McCormack This book lacks the flow of easy writing, and instead reads a bit blocky. The main characters are two boys, survivors of a shooting that contains mysteries, many years later. Did Cal Henderson's Mom really kill most of her family? The two boys, now men, pursue the truth, amidst complications. The narrative is choppy, reads like a series of briefs, is sometimes too explanatory and not enough doing, too much telling not enough showing. The writer fleshes out the scenes with a completeness that removes the crackle of suspense. There is not a sense that the author really knows what a psychologist does, and the cliché of a beautiful secretary, carried over from detective novels, does not work here. This is a swing and a miss. The book is good enough to be average, barely, and is a first effort. Maybe the next will be better.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A good, complex mystery that is not a quick read By Si Dunn "What a swamp a single lie can lead to."Washington, D.C., psychologist Cal Henderson thinks this to himself while he is trying, years later, to sort out the real reasons behind why his two young brothers and father were shot to death, and his mother committed suicide as he watched, helpless.Cal’s friend, Scottie Glass, also was shot and badly wounded that day. But just before Cal’s mother took her own life, she saw Cal in an upstairs window and signaled him, strangely, to get down, to hide. Why had she killed four people including herself and left Cal’s friend critically injured, yet warned Cal to hide? Hide from what? Or whom?Until now, Cal has managed to keep most of these childhood horrors somewhat in check, stored far back in his mind. His psychology practice is thriving, and his clients have many issues of their own to keep his mind occupied and challenged. Then Scottie Glass suddenly shows up after many years, fiercely determined to find out who really shot him and all of the others. And the way Scottie starts confronting important people in the nation’s capitol of purchased power and influence quickly lands him–and Cal, by association–on the FBI’s radar. Cal’s job, at first, is to try to keep Scottie out of jail. But Cal soon is drawn into his friend’s dogged investigation and soon has to take the lead as Scottie keeps using his computer skills to uncover more and more links and leads that could answer Cal’s questions, too.A caution: The Survivors likely will not be a “fast read." The story is complex. But it is well written, with many characters, details, and settings. So be patient; give things time to develop. For me, the story began to click solidly into place at page 75, when FBI agent Jamie Weston tells Cal: “D.C. is a whole different universe. You think you’re playing Go Fish for this guy Scott Glass. Then you find out the game is really Poker and the man holding all the cards is some sort of senator or lobbyist you’ve never heard of.”Indeed, how a years-ago murder-suicide can have some bearing on present-day, multi-billion-dollar defense contracts is just one part of the intricate mystery that unfolds in this series-debut first novel written by Robert Palmer, a practicing Washington, D.C., lawyer and law professor.(My thanks to Seventh Street Books for providing an advance reading copy for review.)

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Great Concept in Search of Some Great Detecting By E. Burian-Mohr One fine afternoon, Cal and his brothers are playing a board game with Cal's friend Scottie. That ended, they move to a game of hide and seek. While Cal counts, his brothers and Scottie go to hide. Cal looks out the window in time to his mother wave to him... and then shoot herself. Cal hides under the bed where he is eventually rescued. Her learns that his brothers, his father. and Scottie were shot, as well. Scottie is in critical condition. The others are dead.Hardly the path to a happy childhood.Cal is taken in by relatives who love and nurture him to relative health. He becomes a psychotherapist in a small, struggling office. He struggles with occasional, though devastating, blackouts. He has a kindly mentor with a goofy dog and a hot secretary. Life, in general, is okay. Then one day a new "client" shows up. It's not a new client at all; it's Scottie, healed physically, mentally somewhat unbalanced, brilliant, unpredicatble, and occasionally violent. Scottie has been doing some investigating on his own, and asks, no demands, that Cal help uncover the mystery of what really happened that horrible day, and why.And so this odd couple goes searching for answers and they manage to unearth all sorts of disturbing truths, crazed characters, scheming businessmen, the FBI, and a few others. While untangling the mystery of what really happend that day and why is compelling reading, Cal and Scottie's (and the FBI's) investigation is not. And that's where the book unraveled for me. I love a good sleuthing; this wan't it.In addition, it seemed that, if Cal was a psychologist, he would have some great psychological insights, a la Joanthan Kellerman in his Alex Delaware books. This is not the case. And with all the gunplay, you'd expect some insightful gun information. This, alas, is not the case either. For me, the best part of the book was the concept: what really happened that day, and why.The rest left me in need of some great detection. Now where did I leave that Nero Wolfe book...?

Toby Neal calls ROCKY BLUFF "A Twisty, Fun Mystery!" Detective Lei Texeira has just moved to Maui from Kauai with boyfriend Michael Stevens when they witness a tragic accident during a performance of The Rocky Horror Show at the local theater. A closer look suggests murder. Stevens is assigned the case but Lei can't keep her nose and her theories out of his investigation especially when she realizes that her new running partner and friend, Kali, might have been the ultimate target. Lei goes undercover in the bizarre theatrical rendition of a narcissistic transsexual and his band of weirdos, but soon finds herself a target as well. Kali's past catches up with her and Lei and Stevens struggle to apprehend a clever killer who stays several steps ahead of the police in this game of terror. It isn't until the Iao Theater ghost intervenes and Lei finds herself conspiring with a dead woman that final clues fit together to form a bizarre mosaic of treachery. Although it's not necessary to read the Lei Crime Series to enjoy Rocky Bluff, Kim highly recommends the Bestselling Police Procedural books by Award-Winning Toby Neal. Rocky Bluff takes place between TORCH GINGER and BLACK JASMINE and includes a yummy and sugary RECIPE for Malasadas (Portuguese Donuts)

The Lei Crime Series: Rocky Bluff (Kindle Worlds Novella) (Bluff Series Book 1), by Kim Hornsby

Review "The story goes through many twists and turns, after trying to solve it on my own another curve ball was thrown and I was shocked. This novella is slightly different from the original series in that we have a sexy thriller and not just a murder mystery. Fabulous book!" --Reviewer Anima Giraldez"Author Hornsby has another winner here! We get our favorite cast of characters from the Lei Texeira novels and we meet new and intriguing ones as well." -- Reviewer Marie M"The plot twists weren't done through trickery of the reader, but rather through well-used plot devices. It was genuinely enjoyable, and I highly recommend it." -- Reviewer Amy M.

From the Author Not Necessary To Read the Lei Crime Series to enjoy Rocky Bluff but this story uses characters created by Toby Neal in her blockbuster hit series Lei Crime. I've added a few new characters of my own but Lei and Stevens are still the main characters. If you've ever seen either the stage version or the movie THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW, you'll enjoy the references to this forty-year-old phenomena. Even if you've never heard of the play that launched the actress Susan Sarandon's career, Rocky Bluff is a murder mystery set on Maui with lots of clues, red herrings and twists. I left room for a second book in the Bluff series, you'll see at the end. Thanks for reading and as always, reviews are as precious to me as if you left a chocolate cake at my door with a fork.Kim

She has managed to create interesting characters that we love reading about. She has created mystery and story lines that lead you down a path of intrigue. She mixes a healthy sexual interlude with the duties of a well liked police force. She uses the Rocky Horror live stage production as a tool to create a murder mystery that is spell binding and deceptive. She creates trust in her players but slowly reveal their weaknesses and underlying problems. She shares with us two female characters and their love interests while outlining the love scenes with sexual descriptions. Maybe a bit too often? The journey she shares with the reader is both complex and simple. She mixes the obvious with the impossible for a terrific blend of interest. The supernatural doesn't escape her pen as she brilliantly includes yet another twist in her story. I have read and loved all her books and now this Novella, and can't wait for her next project. Keep up the good writing and know you have a huge fan, I loved the song at the end...good idea!

A thriller revolving around a dangerous situation and a production of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. If you have read the Lei Crime Series you are familiar with Michael Stevens and Lei Texeira. At this point of the series the story takes between two earlier books when they are just beginning their relationship. Lei has made a new friend, which is highly irregular, and finds she has tons in common with Kali. A murder happens during the opening night of the play and Kali points in the direction of her "stalker". The story goes through many twists and turns, after trying to solve it on my own another curve ball was thrown and I was shocked. This novella is slightly different from the original series in that we have a sexy thriller and not just a murder mystery. Fabulous book!

A long-time community theatre performer myself, and former cast member in the Rocky Horror Show, I got a kick out of the theatre setting and enjoyed seeing Lei finally coming out of her constrained shell onstage. The novella format allows the fan fiction contributors to explore side stories and minor characters who might not support a full-length novel. However, in this case, I felt the short length hindered the author from fully developing clues, red herrings and other alternative suspects in the murder of a cast member during a performance. This was such an excellent plot that it could easily have been expanded into a full novel. I hope we see more from this author.

A mother looks out for her family. But who is looking out for her when she really needs it?

The Estate Series – fiction with an emotional punch from the number one bestselling author. Over half a million copies of her books sold worldwide.

Scars. Sometimes they’re visible. Sometimes they’re hidden deep within. After years of living as a single parent, all Donna Adams longs for is someone to make her smile, to share hopes and dreams with, to keep her warm at night. But when that certain someone gives her the attention she craves, true love doesn’t always follow the right path. Home from the army, Lewis is a changed man. Angry and consumed by grief, troubled by nightmares and flashbacks, his mind is worse now than ever. Shutting out what he’s seen isn’t easy, but he risks losing everything he’s come back to if he doesn’t, including his marriage and his sanity. Megan Cooper hides her scars for fear of being rejected. Mary Marshall can’t always remember how she got hers. If the past could be erased to make a better future, we’d all want that, wouldn’t we? But life is never that easy for the residents of The Mitchell Estate... WRITTEN IN THE SCARS is the fourth book in The Estate Series but each one can be read as a standalone novel. About the Author Mel Sherratt has been a self-described "meddler of words" ever since she can remember. She lives in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, with her husband and her terrier, Dexter (named after the TV serial killer, with some help from her Twitter fans), and makes liberal use of her hometown as a backdrop for some of her writing.

The great thing about that is that I already have a feel for characters and residents that live on the Mitchell Estate, where the books are set. This latest book features less of Housing Officer Josie, and much more of other residents. It focuses around 2 main families and the characters within them and they all have their own issues and problems.Donna is always spending time caring for her sick Mother, or running around ensuring her grown up children are doing okay. When she meets a guy she feels like it’s finally time for her to be a little bit selfish. Donna’s children Keera and Sam are also featured heavily in the story. In addition to Donna we meet Lewis whose story is extremely tragic. As a soldier returning from War it’s clear that he is suffering and his actions become more and more dangerous as he struggles to by in daily life. I really liked a character Megan, who has her own ‘scars’ that stay hidden and she was one of my favourites from the early stages. The stories that Mel Sheratt achieves are always intricately plotted so that everyone gets enough ‘page time’ if you know what I mean, I really felt myself getting to grips with and having empathy for various characters almost from the outset. The story featuring Donna was quite harrowing and was something I ‘felt’ coming. I always see that as a good sign, because it means the author is creating enough suspense to scare you senseless! The only thing that I struggled with was a particular character and relationship in the book with a character called Derek. I don’t want to say too much for fear of spoiling it for others, but for some reason this element of the story didn’t sit right with me?There is a lot of story packed in here but it’s easy to follow and once again gives you an idea of the type of people living on The Mitchell Estate. I think book 3 held the edge for me over this one but this is still a superb and solid read. Josie Mellor the housing officer only makes very brief appearances, but enough to keep us in the loop with her life. As it had been a while since I got back into reading this series I forgot how much I loved it. This is another great book from Mel Sherratt and this series is an absolute MUST read.

But this book 4 literally blew me away with the indepth characters, they're troubles, strife and woes. The Estate is just it. Its an Estate where families live in different homes, some poorer than others, and each from all walks of life. Some dysfunctional families that have terrible problems to some with everyday family problems.Written In the Scars was a story to me where there were different individuals, some friends with each other, some related. All with Scars. There some scars that can be seen. There are some scars that lay unseen by the human eye.Lewis He had scars that you could see by his personality and his reactions in life. But they were not evident scars on the body. Oh no, not ones that could be seen for you to meet him and realize that he was scared. You would have to have known a little about him first. Otherwise, his reactions, his behavior would simply come across to you as a thug, a bully. But he Lewis was sad. He had a secret. He went through something that he couldn't cope with when in the Army.He has PTSD symptoms. He has lost his wife, he hardly sees his child. He's determined to get them back.Donna she has scars. The first half of the book you can't see her scars. They are emotional scars left over from her marriage. She falls in love, another chance...she thinks.Later though, she gets scarred.Scars you can see, scars you can hear from her sad lips.I cringed for Donna.Donna has all her families burdens and worries on her shoulders as most Moms do.She also is worried about her own Mother in the care home. Her Mother has dementia and she doesn't know what to believe or not, but is her Mother being badly treated? Another thing for her to worry about. Then there is Sam.Then there is Megan. Megan works at the hospital where Sam has had his operation.Megan has scars, Megan has visible scars. But no one can see them under the heavy make up.I don't know why, but each time I have read one of these books from The Estate by Mel Sherratt I feel like a nosy neighbor. Someone twitching at her curtains and peeking out after dark, watching the neighborhood and wondering 'just what is gonna happen next'. Its that kind of "feel" to me.I am not sure if that is how the author wanted a reader to feel, but it certainly did that for me.A kind of 'sit down at the table over a cuppa and a gossip about this one and that'I also took away something from this book about ScarsWe all have them. Some are hidden. Some are visible by the naked eye. Some are known to us by the actions and thoughts plus decisions we may make in the future because of them.We can be an acress/actor, and we can cover up our scars, we can invent ourselves and pretend they are just not there...but there they are...beneath the surface of:Make upA smileA laughA thoughtA frown. And some need help overcoming the Scars.Thank you Mel for a wonderful read that kept me up last night :)

Grit-lit by an excellent British author By Reading Stuff 'n' Things blog I really enjoy reading Mel’s books but this is the first one I have read from The Estate Series. Her other books from the DS Allie Shenton Series - Follow The Leader and Only The Brave are brilliant so I did not hesitate when Mel asked me to read and review her new book, Written in the Scars and I am so pleased I did because I really liked it even though it is slightly different to what I normally read.Mel has a skill of drawing you into the lives of complete strangers, becoming attached to them and really caring about what happens to them even if some of them are far from perfect. The characters she creates are authentic and believable and Mel makes you feel that they could be you, a member of your family, a friend, neighbour or work colleague. The trials and tribulations she puts them through are more than plausible they are true-to-life and are probably happening in your street right now.Donna is a 40-something, single parent working in a local shop; her son is walking a thin line to becoming a miscreant, her daughter working in a massage parlour and to top it all, her mum has dementia. Donna is the linchpin in the family but all she wants is a little fun herself and to get the spark back into her life. There is a saying that good things only happen to good people, well, this isn’t always true - I won’t elaborate further - no spoilers from me - you’ll just have to read the book.Lewis is an ex-soldier who has brought back a lot of baggage from his tours in Afghanistan and as a result, has lost his family and is back living on The Estate with his mum who herself is mourning the death of her husband. All Lewis wants is to be back with his family however, he is on self-destruct and as a result, is pushing all those he holds dear and those who want to help further away. I found myself really feeling for Lewis and I desperately wanted to jump in the book and help him myself - that’s what Mel does, like I said, she makes you care. There are many other characters of note including Megan - a young girl with a secret who is holding down two jobs as well as caring for her disabled mum; Josie - a housing officer with a heart and Owen - Donna’s love interest. There are some more minor characters as well and although I call them minor, they are pivotal to the realism of the book.Mel’s writing style is easy to read and flows well. Her use of language during the dialogue, both internal and between characters, is natural and convincing.Mel is a favourite author of mine and I would encourage anyone who enjoys a great character-driven story or, as Mel describes it herself, grit-lit (women’s fiction with a punch) to buy this book, you will not be disappointed and once you have, you will want to read everything else she has written.
