Once again Carolyn Arnold gives us another thriller, as Madison Knight is in the forefront of a mystifying murder mystery. What starts out as perhaps a simple case of the death of a 68 year old woman, who is found in a wheelchair in front of a hospital. But as we have come to learn, nothing is ever simple for Madison. The case will escalate into a couple more murders that somehow seem related. Do we have a serial killer on the loose?When we left off in the previous book, Madison had survived being kidnapped by the Russian mob, and in Deadly Impulse, Madison tries to hide the fact that she has been having devastating flashbacks where her life hung by a thread. Trying to solve this complex mystery, with those obstacles makes it even more difficult for Madison. But nothing will ever stop Madison as she preservers despite all the twists and surprises that keep coming at her.During the investigation, Madison works closely with her partner, Terry, who is anxiously awaiting the birth of his first child; her best friend, Cynthia; and her boyfriend, Troy. As I have mentioned before, for the most part Madison usually stands alone, with not a lot of support from management. Hopefully with the new female chief, this will begin to change, though I am still not a fan of her partner, Terry. In future books though, I do have a wish list. I would love to see Madison become more open, and trusting, with a loyal team behind her. I like what I see with her and Troy, as well as her friendship with Cynthia and hopefully the new chief.This was an intense and exciting mystery from start to finish, which Arnold always gives us in each and every book in this series. As each new clue or finding is found, we become more stumped as to who is the killer. Very well done, Carolyn. If you enjoy murder mysteries, police procedural, a tough cop, then this series is a must for you.

Madison is a very conflicted woman, and it shows. I could had done without her remembering so often her experience with the Russian mob but it did turn out to be an important part of the story. Would recommend this book to anyone who loves a mystery. All the clues are there to solve it, just read carefully. Great read, looking forward to the next one.

Deadly Impulse: Be prepared for sleepless nights or non-productive days By IMHO So glad I was a bit behind on my to read list, because I had just finished Carolyn Arnold's Just Cause, when Deadly Impulse hit my bookshelf. If you have not had the chance to experience the Detective Madison Knight crime series, these two books could be read together. But you will want to go back to read the rest of the series to enjoy the masterful way Carolyn Arnold weaves her plot lines with ticklers for future cases, and the continued development of Madison as a person.Deadly Impulse brings Madison Knight three seemingly related murders to solve, and as usual she jumps into the investigation head first. Even though one case is not assigned to her, Madison does not stand on protocol--a habitual irritant to her boss--and nothing keeps her from following all leads.Grappling with PTSD from a near-death experience, Madison constantly struggles to keep the vows she'd made to herself if she survived, as well as to honor her partner's request that she never again put herself in harm's way without backup. Can Madison control the headstrong impulsivity that has threatened her life and career over and over again? Especially with three victims calling to her for justice.And then there's that hunky new guy who clearly wants more than casual dates. Can Madison break the cycle of destructive past relationships to take this chance at happiness?The pace is fast, with enough plot twists to make the book hard to put down. Review Whoa. Break me off a piece of Simon Dunn please! It's like he's James Bond, but sexier! Which for any Bond fan out there, will tell you that as the years progress, Bond only seems to get hotter and hotter. That's how I feel about Simon. Simply Brilliant By Angela @ Simply Angela I’m a huge fan of the show MI5/Spooks, so when I read the blurb for True Deceptions, I knew I had to read this book. And I have to say that I was not disappointed. True Deceptions is definitely going on my Top Ten Favorite Books of 2015 list. I could not put this book down and I did not want it to end.Here’s what’s going on. Simon’s an MI6 agent who, after the death of his partner, decided to pull himself from the game and hideout in Bermuda until the woman he intended to shag dies of cyanide poisoning and a shady MI6 operative blackmails him back into service. Now Simon is stuck with a new partner who, while attractive, has the potential to ruin the mission and get them both killed.Cassie has spent three years working as a technology specialist now she’s received orders to go into the field as a spook. While her new partner is one sexy spy, there’s just a few tiny problems: She’s a vegan pacifist who has no knowledge of field work. Now she’s thrown into a dangerous world with a partner she’s pretty sure despises her and he definitely doesn’t trust her.When their mission is jeopardized from the inside, Cassie and Simon must rely on each other to survive and soon their cover of being lovers turns into the real thing.Okay so, I loved this book. Like read it in 3 hours love. Sadly, I missed the first book in this series (Untrue Colors). Although True Deceptions works brilliantly as a standalone, I will be reading book one ASAP just to see what kind of trouble Simon’s brother gets into.I really loved Simon, he’s a bit of wanker but it works for him. When I think of a spook/agent from MI6, Simon is exactly who comes to mind. He’s a cold, demanding, gruff, work focused, and not willing to let people—even his new partner—in. He’s working undercover as an arms dealer, the best in the field, but he’s only back in the game because he’s been forced. He had been hoping to have something more with his previous partner although she was murdered before anything happened. So, while he’s attracted to Cassie, he’s trying to keep her off limits.I wasn’t sure how well I was going to like Cassie. She’s a pacifist who doesn’t believe in harming people or animals, she’s also anti-gun so she had the potential to come off as preachy or an over the top activist, thankfully, she wasn’t. While she was the oddest choice for a spook, I ended up really liking the way she dealt with her new lifestyle and her brutish new partner. And when push comes to shove, Cassie has the potential to shove back.Simon and Cassie were like chalk and cheese. He’s 100% spy and she’s kind of like this little hippie yet they had amazing chemistry. It started the moment she held a gun to the back of his head and he quickly disarmed her and only grew as the book progressed.While there was attraction and chemistry between them, there was also quite a bit of conflict and I was never really sure if they were to kill each other or shag and it totally worked for his book. There was also tension because she wasn’t his first choice—or even his tenth choice—for a new partner so it was fun watching them navigate their work and personal relationships.The suspense aspect of this book started at beginning and didn’t slow down. There were several edge-of-your-seat moments while they set up arms deals and dealt with the fallout.This book does contain it’s fair share of violence and at one point, Cassie is placed in a situation that some readers may be uncomfortable with.Overall, this book was amazing. The characters were engaging and realistically flawed, the plot was fast-paced, actioned packed, and thrilling. If you’re like me and love a spy romance or are suffering from MI5 withdraws, this is the perfect book for you.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A Sexy Spy Thriller By Jo-Ann Carson Veronica Forand’s action-packed, Romantic Suspense thriller, True Deceptions is a phenomenal read. I can’t think of a better word to describe it. I couldn’t put it down.The opening chapter is brilliantly written, rivalling the openings of James Bond movies. Filled with emotional drama, well developed characters and conflict it leaps off the page. I won’t give any spoilers, but I will say she had me within a few pages.British, alpa-male hero, Simon Dunn, a somewhat reluctant MI6 operative, has class, intellect and courage beyond measure. Forand builds an intriguing character motivated by conflict and heart. Ruggedly handsome, the heroine notes, “…his body appeared molded by Roman gods for purely hedonistic activities.” And he’s good at those activities.And Californian, Cassie Watson, a peace-loving, vegan, computer nerd turns out to be his perfect match. Simon describes her as, “…a brain in a centerfold’s body.” He tries not to notice the leggy blonde too much, because he has a huge assignment to complete, but he can’t help but note, “…her looks could disarm a man even if her fighting skills couldn’t.” And, “…She could break the concentration of a Tibetan monk!”The heat between them sizzles.The secondary characters are equally intriguing. The plot is fast paced and has surprising twists. Even though the subject is dead serious, Forand’s rich sense of humor plays through the dialogue deepening the texture of the plot and the tone of the novel.Thoroughly entertaining! I recommend Veronica Forand’s True Deceptions for any reader who loves sizzling romance and intriguing spy stories.I’m going now to Simon’s Facebook page. I’m totally his fanMy favorite line: “Crawling around in the mud and digging a ditch under a hidden section of barbed wire fencing were not his favorite activities, but he’d walk through molten lava to bring Cassie to safety.”

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Some things threw me about this book. By Deanna's World I had a hard time getting into this book. It was slow to get started and there was a lot of background building. It took a long time to get to the point of the story since there was so much prep that was going on where Simon was resisting having Cassie as his new partner and him preparing Cassie.I did not get to know Simon too well in the little I read about him but he seemed to be the typical alpha male with a bit of alphahole thrown in. He's good at his job, shut off from him emotions and keeps everyone at bay. Yeah, he's that type of guy!Poor Cassie. She's really been thrown into the deep end and Simon doesn't give her an easy time of it. She's really struggling when we meet her and there's no one to help her find her way in an assignment she is clearly unsuitable for. I liked her awkwardness and naiveté but again, I didn't read long enough to get to know her very well.The reason I didn't finish this book was twofold. One, I didn't connect with the book. The pacing was slow and I felt it dragged somewhat. Two, this is the second book in a series and I hate starting a series in the middle. I usually always check when it comes to a series because I'm OCD enough not to want to fall in the trap of starting in the middle, it has happened to me before! However, nothing about this book indicates it's part of a series. I checked Amazon, Goodreads and the publisher's site and it reads like a standalone book. Only, you get into part of the book and there are two characters who get introduced and if you read enough series, you immediately know, these two people appeared in a previous book. If it was just a mention, it would have been okay, but it gave a lot of information away from what happened in the first book and also looked like these characters were playing a decent sized role in this current book. That really put me off. Anyway, this stopped me in my tracks. I did not finish the book. I will probably go back to read the first book before continuing with this one since the writing is pretty decent and I feel like I'm being unfair to the author.

By MLNVY Absolutely LOVED this book -Steel Riders MC that was a bonus book with Burn: Devil Knights MC!Hank was just an amazing character, larger than life with an photographic memory that really threw many people, and he was happy to use his gift for that purpose! Cynthia, new to town book editor, that unknowingly lives right near Hank, but meets him at one of the MC's watering holes.Hank is haunted by a robbery gone bad 4 years previous to where the story picks up with another club member, Derrick. Derrick made a complete mess of the robbery, and was caught by a female deputy. Hank refused to shoot her as Derrick begged. Hank knew she was a single mother of two small children, and he just wouldn't shoot her, and Derrick went to prison for 2 years.Derrick's long time partner, Daphne put up with a lot from Derrick over the 11 years they were together, and the club members tried to give her a lot of leeway knowing her lot in life with Derrick was not easy. Then Derrick turns up dead, and automatically some members point the finger at Hank to the extent of trying to jump him in his own home. Then there is the cartel Hank has infiltrated, and is planning to take down with the MC as payback for two older members that were brutally murdered by the cartel. Hank's life is one dangerous secret, and Cyn understands there is a lot he cannot tell her, but she never believes all the stories that Derrick and Daphne tell her about what a horrible person Hank really is.This story had so many wonderful characters, and such a strong storyline, it was such a shame that Ms. Faye had to put in so much Cyn/Daphne sex scenes, and a ménage or two with Hank. It just distracted from the rest of the book, and really wasn't all that important to the story! While Daphne professes to be a lesbian, she is with Derrick, then after he dies she jumps to another MC member, Boston, gets married and has a child. Somehow this doesn't seem terribly plausible to me after what she admits to Cyn. It just could have been dialed back some, and not been so much of the story! Hoping that the next installment for the Steel Knights keeps that in mind!!!

The story in genral was really good and the characters of Hank and Cynthia were both very likable.However,the crisp storyline is bogged down by overwriting and too much narration. It seemed like Carmen Faye tried too hard to tell us everyting instead of showing it to us.

Even with the action, it seemed to lack passion. I liked the characters and the story line, but could never fully connect with them. Not sure what it is. Maybe a spark. It didn't come alive as I read. I come away from this story still not sure who the main characters are as people. Then they both talked about not cheating and having threesomes, but at the end they are comfortable with it? That part didn't make sense and should have been left out. I, as a reader, would have preferred Hank getting upset about it, giving us that pivotal moment in their relationship where it either broke them up or made them grow stronger (hopefully stronger). I guess that's what it is. The moments that could have meant so much weren't built up or explored in enough depth to show the characters strong emotions. The only part the kind of went there was when Cyn went to club and started kicking *ss, but even that didn't get passionate enough. I wanted to like this book and I do, but I would not read it again. I gave it four stars because it's not horrible and some people may like the more laid back approach the author took.

Not that I didn’t enjoy the first book, “Wrong Place”, but in this second book I liked DI Sally Parker even better. She is more confident & less stiff than she was in the first book. But that could have been due to the personal problems she was having in the first book.What I liked about this story is that the story was very plausible; I could see this happening in real life. And at the end the motive made sense to me. This was one story that had a lot of suspects and they all could have a motive for wanting Gemma dead. But wanting someone dead and being able to murder are two different things and not something everyone is always capable of doing—so you needed to look for a strong motive and also for someone who was capable of committing murder. So that is what I did as I was reading the story, looking for motive and for capability. I finally narrowed my choices down to 2 people after the first murder and after some thought believed I had finally figured out whom it was and what the motive was. So with that thought in mind I read the story as if that person was the murderer. It was after the second murder that I began to re-think that my first choice for murder was wrong and I was right—that person didn’t commit the murder. That left me the second choice I had made at the beginning of the story and that proved to be correct. It was how and where the second murder was committed that finally convinced me that my second choice was the right choice. To me the murderer was a very evil person to be able to kill 2 women and their unborn children. I was very glad that the person was caught and I was also very glad that one of the suspects (but not a murderer) got what was coming to him/her. Of all the characters in the story, I felt the most sympathy for the little girl in the story. I read this story in one setting.Like all of Ms. Comely’s books, this is a stand alone story. No sex scenes and very little profanity.Now I am really looking forward to the next book that Mel Comely is now writing—a joint investigation between DI Sally Parker and DI Lorne Warner in “Twisted Justice”. Even though I like Sally Parker, I love Lorne Warner so I expect this next book will become my favorite book of all!I was given a copy of this book by the author but my review was my honest opinion.

A surprising twist By Karen Roberts 4.5* review of No Hiding Place by M A ComelyDetective Inspector Sally Parker and Detective Sergeant Jack Blackman are back in the 2nd book of a new series. Don't worry, if you've not read (book #1) Wrong Place, this can still be read as a stand alone, but you would miss out on some of the main characters back story. Both detectives have personal issues to deal with alongside heading a murder investigation team (MIT) in Norfolk, and sometimes those personal and family matters affect them during their investigations. No Hiding Place opens with the brutal murder of Gemma Whiting on an isolated country lane close to her home. Gemma is found by the side of her car which has been shunted at the rear. Her car and personal belongings have not been stolen. Why did she stop and get out of her car so close to home but in a place where there were no witnesses? The murder has all the hallmarks of being carried out by a known assailant. First job is to find the motivation which will lead the police to their suspect. The post mortem finds that Gemma is pregnant! Who else knows? Who is the father? And how is this linked to her death?As with Wrong Place the story is written as a narrative with dialogue from the characters in a conversational style. This makes it easy to follow and connect with the people and places as they come and go. For the most part the police procedure is credible and the storyline believable. (Though I do have to say, having had a fairly lengthy police career I did note some detail that could have been brought into play) The only negative comment I have is that I was frustrated with the unexplained jump of six months near to the end of the story and some loose ends that weren't resolved. Otherwise I found this book gives a great deal of detail and flows through the events of the investigation with good pace and keeps the reader eagerly turning those pages.I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author via THE Book Club on Facebook (#TBConFB) in exchange for an honest review.

In Mel Comley's second instalment in the series, Sally is investigating the brutal murder of a young woman.Gemma Whiting has been bludgeoned to death in an alleyway, her body found the following morning next to her car. Interviewing the victim's family, Sally becomes aware that nothing is as it seems. She's suspicious of practically all family members as they all seem to have something to hide. Soon, Sally's investigation stumbles upon a tangled web of secrets, lies and betrayal within the family. What are they all hiding? Who killed Gemma in this horrible way? Why would anyone kill this young mother? And who was the man Gemma was seen talking to the night before?But without concrete evidence, the case remains unsolved, until months later when another woman is savagely attacked. That gets the ball rolling again for Sally, and this time she goes out more determined than ever to bring the killer to justice.Once again, through this fast-paced book, Mel Comley had me pinned to my kindle, furiously swiping one page after the other, desperately wanting to know the killer's identity. I thought I'd guessed who the killer was on more than one occasion, but through the numerous twists and turns the author plants every so often, I found myself looking into a completely different direction and never in a million years would I have guessed who the real killer was.We see many aspects of Sally's character in this book. She's a tenacious police officer and boss, but also a soft-hearted woman especially when it comes to deal with others like her family, animals and colleagues. I love this character and am looking forward to see what she will be up to in the next book. As with Wrong Place, this book is fabulous and I highly recommend it.With thanks to the author for an advanced review copy of the book.

I would find it odd to read a book set in Hawaii that just had one race.  But, I didn't set out to write an interracial or multicultural series. By Sheri V A romantic suspense that grabbed me and wouldn't let go, Ms. Schroeder shows that she definitely has the skill to write any genre and do it well. This is the start to a new series, that I can't wait to devour as they come out.Del, is a pretty perfect hero, he has moments when he's a bit clueless about women, but at the same time he's dealing with not your typical heroine. He's strong, sexy and definitely a great leader of the TASK FORCE HAWAII team.Emma, doesn't think like everyone else, and it should just make her weird, but instead it makes her perfect to help track down a serial killer. I like that she doesn't really apologize for her differences but instead embraces them. I enjoyed watching Del respond to her quirkiness and fall in love with her despite and maybe even because of them.I adored this story, it had suspense, build up, tension and I couldn't put it down until the very end. I highly recommend it to fans of romantic suspense, Ms. Schroeder gives us one wild ride, that has both great characters and great plot. I look forward to more cases with TASK FORCE HAWAII.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Sexy & Suspenseful By P. Phan I love reading romantic suspense and Melissa Schroeder did not disappoint with this story. I've loved reading her Harmless series and I was looking forward to this spin-off series. I enjoyed Del and Emma's relationship and watching them work together on solving this killer case as well as finally seeing them give into their feelings for each other. I could not stop reading because the author had me hooked as I rooted for Del, Emma and the entire task force to catch the serial killer and to see Del and Emma get their happy ending. I really enjoyed the bond the team shared and I cannot wait to read the next book.

Once I started, I couldn't stop until I found out who the killer was. I am used to stories from Melissa Schroeder involving romance and great chemistry between characters, but what really drew me into this story was the mystery and suspense of the case. Don't get me wrong, the suspense between Del and Emma kept me wanting more, as well. The entire department of characters were so well written. There was a nice mix of sentimental and sarcasm. I'm hoping to see more of their stories in the future.The case involves a serial killer of women, and there are some dark issues, but it is all written in as respectful a manner as possible. While you have an idea as to what happened to the women, you aren't given graphic detail. I appreciated this, as I didn't want it to be too detailed. You have enough information that you root for the team to find the killer, AND SOON!I haven't read a mystery/suspense/thriller in a long while, and this book reminded me how much I enjoy them. I can't wait until the next in the Task Force Hawaii series comes out. I highly recommend you read this one, before the next comes out!I bought this book at an author convention and couldn't be happier with the purchase.
