It paints a vivid picture of army life back then, and the events that took place (on a personal scale more than a global one.). Very amusing anecdotes, and as an "Army brat" myself, I saw similar things in the early 60s. John and my father were based together in Singapore, I remember "Uncle Sam".

I mean, how hard would it be to write a negative review about a book that someone has given to you free? However, I changed my mind when I received the opportunity to review Distance in return for an advance copy, I knew there was little chance of having to write anything negative about the book. After all, I now own all of David Pandolfe's books. He would have to fall off the rails if this third book in the Streetlights Like Fireworks series ended up deserving a negative review. I was right to have played the odds. The book rocks.All of the positive reviews do a great job covering the characters, plot and various nuances of Distance. I want to talk about the bus. The bus is the single element that initially pulled me into the Streetlights Like Fireworks series. Being a child of the 1960's, the Volkswagen bus on the cover was like the siren call of light hearted days, optimism, free spirited adventures and living a little outside of the box. The atmosphere and expectation was set before I ever read the first page. And, sure enough, Pandolfe incorporates all of these elements into Distance...the spur of the moment road trips, the characters' willingness to put themselves in situations that would make others perceive them as not quite normal, acting on a supernatural whim and on and on. I think Pandolfe's use of the bus both as a literal and metaphorical vehicle in Distance is nothing less than GENIUS. David, what color is the next bus and when should I be looking for it?

David Pandolfe has written another great adventure of Jack and Lauren - Distance - the third installment in the Streetlights Like Fireworks series. It's not necessary to read the first two books, but I recommend doing so to fully understand the characters and relationships. This is a great read: realistic characters and an intriguing, suspenseful plot. The scene with the two runaway girls under the bridge is rather dark, but the way David handles it the scene is not nightmare inducing. It does a very good job of showing the dangers of street life and the hardness and danger of Rose. Other reviewers have given summaries so I will just give my recommendation - Buy this book and read it, you will not regret a moment of it

Jack and Lauren develop a bit more each book as they figure their relationship out. once again the vw bus is front and center, and Pandolfe writes some of the best chapter titles out there. rarity of rarities.other characters are introduced, older characters make appearances. the two mysteries dovetail into one masterfully.wonderful wonderful characters. a human pace to the action.give yourself a treat. read this series!!and i received an advanced reader copy (ARC) of the book in exchange for an honest review. now i am going to buy one!!

That was proper edge of your seat, fly by the seat of your pants stuff. I was gripped to that storyline from start to finish. J L Drake even managed to spook the hell out of me too. What a fantastic series, more than deserving of 5 stars. Excellent stuff.

The second book for me was good but not like round one; now round three we are back into a monstrous hell. And if you have shady friends you are going to start watching them more closely now! Haha! Thank you thank you!There is so much that played out here. When you leave book two you know something isn't right. The story and events just don't sit well. You senses are up waiting for the blows because you know they are coming. Scott and Travis are at the head of suspect. However there is so much more that we didn't see or know.Seth has a jacked up family to say the least and Emily's Mom is no better. Their relationship is tested all while Emily is trying to recover from her nightmare. You all know in these types of books when the characters think they are safe all hell breaks loose. I was literally terrified to keep digging in. I'm telling you after the snake incident in book two I turned the pages with one eye closed and my head turned.There is a new character that will make you wonder even more what the junk is going on and you aren't going to like her a bit. Sister needed to be thrown to the wolves in my opinion. The last couple,of chapters are going to be stunners. Prepare yourself for it all comes to a head.I really can't say much else but you head is going to be left spinning. Confessions are made during a very stressful event on all accounts. You will have to read yourself to see who the devil is because he is still there hiding on those pages. Good luck because I about peed my pants numerous times. He's watching you …. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Intricate plotting kept the suspense high in this read. By Mady Rivas I give the author a lot of credit for intricate plotting. The underlying motives of the bad guy made sense, and his plan for revenge was suspenseful as it unfolded. The pacing of action was also strong.I had some issues with the characters, though. Seth and Emily had known each other for 3 years at the start of this book - 2 years as friends, and 1 year as lovers. If at this point they weren't able to trust each other, then when would they ever? This constant doubt about each other rang really false for two people who had the chemistry they had - and they really did have chemistry. The other issue I had was too many characters. The author even inserted a couple of characters from her last series to enable a gay sex scene. Not sure what that added to the overall plot advancement or our understanding of the main characters except that Emily liked to watch. It was hard to remember all the secondary characters from the prior reads, so when they popped up here, it was disruptive to the read to puzzle through who they were and what role they played. Lastly, there are a fair number of dropped words, inappropriate word usage, and other minor editing issues.This series as a whole is a definite read. My advice if you haven't started it yet to read them back to back for character continuity purposes.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Joe (sephine?) Friday? By Anne Reminds me of a strangely abstracted female version of Joe Friday from the (very) old Dragnet series. It's a series of 4-10 page crime stories without any plot development and/or characters other than some interplay between the two detectives. Based on this I won't be looking for other books by the author, but I didn't just stop reading halfway through so it wasn't a total waste of money. But be aware that it isn't a series of full-length anything, and much of the page count is the two-three page intro on each story that is not reading material.

I didn't enjoy the previous book and was considering quitting the series. I'm so glad I gave it another try. The story was excellent and I was thrilled with the ending. I have been waiting and waiting for Callie to be with the right man - and it finally happened.

By Illinois Reader In the latest Callie Parrish mystery, MURDER IS ON THE CLOCK, there are quite a few surprises and plot twists that left me wondering until the very end. Callie seems to have the worst luck-from being on the scene of yet another discovery of a murder victim to having her beloved Mustang (vintage convertible-not horse) destroyed, things almost couldn't go worse. In typical Callie fashion, when she is called upon at work to fix up and dress an unfortunate murder victim (not the same person Callie found), she gives 150% of herself to help another person. She is such a patient (usually) and giving person that I was especially glad the way the book ended. She deserved that. What did she deserve? you ask...well read the book and find out!A fun and fast read with all the favorite characters and some new ones to keep things fresh. A wedding, a divorce avoided, and a romance revived all play into the plot and fun. I was lucky enough to win a copy of this book from a blog (Dru's Book Musings) and want to thank the author for the lovely autographed copy she sent me. It was a privilege to read your book, Fran! Thanks! I have read the other books in the series and can recommend the series to all.
