He watched as the "Marguerite" went down stern first in turbulent waves with all hands aboard. Shanghaied on the Bering Sea whaler "Northern Light" in 1901, recounted through his short stories and poems the memory of the icy northern waters and the intrepid seamen who fought the treacherous sailing conditions and behemoths of the ocean on frigates, schooners, and barques. Hear the call to the Yukon to search for gold or choke on the ochre dust of an early Arizona cattle ranch starved for water; more precious than gold. Relive the frenzy of the penny mining stocks of the 1920's or '30's and the chalk board that trumpets those impassionate, impersonal announcements of the failure of yet another bonanza mine. Would they all fail or reward his tinselled certificates with a fortune? Is life worth living without a Hupmobile? In an era when change exploded in this country, survival required vigor and adaptation. Life then, as now, wasn't easy.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Inspiring and Upbeat Adventure Stories By Ian As an author, Stanley McShane is particularly gifted with vernacular speech; his seamen and miners speak in the colloquialisms of the day, which sometimes has me reaching for the dictionary, but the flavorful language makes the characters pop on the page. Few writers are as gifted with establishing character through spoken language as Stanley. Though his characters electrify you for other reasons; they’re as picaresque as anything you’ll find in a Robert Louis Stevenson novel; as authors go, that’s the one Stanley reminds me of the most. These short stories had me laughing out loud and begging to see them as shorts at film festivals around the world. If it were me, I’d post the screenplay versions to Inktip.com to see if they got any nibbles. (Hint to descendants managing Stanley’s estate.) But the writing here is suitably imagistic; in some ways I’ve already seen the movie playing in my head.Though all the short stories are immense fun (with insanely humorous flourishes), the seafaring ones are my favorite. Can’t get the little squirrel monkey terrorizing the seamen aboard ship out of my mind (too funny.) None of the tales lack for a sense of adventure; many had me wanting to jump into a time machine, but the vividness of Stanley’s writing is not a bad compromise.Stanley also excels at the setup. You’ll be reading about daily life about a sea ship circa 1900 in gory detail. There’s a satisfying warmth to the routine and camaraderie among the men, like settling in with family before a warm fire. Then bam! The vessel is being hit by a ship-killing wave. And that quick, you’re fighting for your life. The author’s dry, understated, and terse, Hemingway-like style just amplifies the drama when you think it might play it down. “A typhoon had struck the ship, masts and rigging; sails and all went overboard. I never saw Frank Parker again.”Stanley also has such a down-to-earth, humble, unassuming way about him that it’s easy to forget he captained seagoing vessels of his own that circled the world many times over from the time he was twenty-five. (Apparently his father was a ship’s captain too, and his grandfather the Governor of Canada!) The guy has quite the pedigree but his soul is that of the common man; he doesn’t have an elitist bone in his body.Fans of the reality TV series that feature crabbers and sword fishermen and their ilk and revel in just how dangerous these guys lives are will likely love Stanley’s books; they have all the same harrowing dangers, which is all the easier to appreciate when you think that they had to contend with far more primitive vessels and equipment in his day (we’re talking late 1890s and early 1900s here.)Curiously, I’m also a fan of Murdock Mysteries on Netflix, set in the same time period (late 1890s and early 1900s). As I’ve learned from the TV series, this is a fun time, historically speaking, for as primitive (relative to today) as it is, it’s also exploding with scientific discovery and energy. Stanley has a bit of Murdock in him, and like Murdock, very much captures the energy, eagerness for discovery and scientific prowess of the times. In true Murdock fashion, Stanley is signed up on a whaler for similar braininess. “‘Can you use the sextant and quadrant?’ the captain with his stinking whiskey breath asked me. ‘Yes, sir,’ I replied, “and the logarithms and azimuths. I can give you the latitude and longitude we are in at this time,’ I told him.’”Sole Survivor is the third Stanley McShane title I’ve read. All the books have been quite wonderful, but if you’re still uncertain about wading in, considering Amazon’s free sample feature, you might try out one of the complete short stories in this collection as a jumping of point to all destinations Stanley.

The Remarkable Patrick John Rose By Clear Creek Press This is a wonderful tale – exciting, intellectual, and adventurous, it is an amalgam of the real Patrick John Rose – a remarkable man. In his lifetime Rose was a sailor, prospector, miner, cowboy, and oil worker. But he was also an author, a poet, and an artist as well. He published a fascinating book, painted a collage of remarkable illustrations, and penned numerous poems. He lived a singularly uncommon life, to say the least, and he left records to prove it. Sole Survivor is a collection of nautical experience, western saga, and artistic endeavor that is both enthralling and entertaining – a writing so genuine and accurate as to please the most discerning intellect.Michael ReisigClear Creek Press

Another Good Read From Al Stevens By Dan Culleton I've loved the first seven of Al Stevens' Stan Bentworth series and wondered if Assisted Homicide would live up to my high expectations. The answer is Yes with a capital Y. The characters are well developed, the writing clear, witty and intelligent and the narrative has the velocity of a magnum. And I can't begin to count the times I almost fell of my couch laughing at the nonstop humor.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Nothing but fun! By jdkinman Ha! Nothing Al Stevens writes will ever be predictable. Once again, Stanley Bentworth finds himself in a pickle and manages to ensnare his young assistant and anyone else within arm's reach in his troubles.I am not a fan, at all, of private detective stories and yet I find myself anxiously awaiting Stevens' next episode of Bentworth's adventures. The writing is just that fun.

Do you know what the four most devastating words are, that any woman, hope’s. she will never have to hear in her lifetime? “You have breast cancer” (that got your attention, didn’t it..) What would you do if it happened to you?

If you were, just rolling along, quite happily living your life, doing the things that you love to do, just being a normal person with every day worries. Then out of the blue, a stranger told you this. How would you cope, how would you feel?

Would you feel like nuclear explosion had just gone off in your head and your safe little world had just been turned upside down? ... I did, when this happened to me!

Cancer doesn’t care, if you are rich and famous, or someone who no one outside of your own world, has ever heard of. Are you married with a young family or are you still single and still looking for a partner, or even a gay, it doesn’t matter. Cancer doesn’t discriminate. This disease can come out of nowhere. It might be today, tomorrow, next month or next year. Will you be the one who gets the unlucky roll or the dice or draws the short straw? Why did it pick me you wonder, why was I the unlucky one to be singled out. It is not fair is it? What, have I done to deserve this!

Nearly every person you meet, knows someone whose life has been touched by cancer. Whether it is their mum, wife, sister, girlfriend or daughter. Have you ever wondered, what treatments they, will have to go through? How scared they might be feeling, trying to deal with this devastating news. No? Well… neither had I, until the unthinkable happened to me.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. just ok By autumnwind Nice read but that's about it. John is not the sharpest knife in the drawer and really not much of a detective. Bad guys breaking into his office and he never even knows. Most cases seem to get solved by chance rather than good detective work. Certainly not much character development either.

Dans writing style fresh and captivating as ever . I've enjoyed all his writing . Hope you continue to turn out these thrillers.

Sent to a Great Plains farming community to keep an eye on Reacher and wait for further instructions. Will Nicholas Colt discover the shocking truth in time to avert one of the worst disasters in history? 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. WHILE REACHER SLEEPS By Andy Martin if you love Reacher you are going to love this too. In fact it trumps Lee Child in some ways. You find yourself going, 'C'mon Reacher! how could you miss that? There's a nuclear bomb right under Mother's Rest! It does for 'Make Me' what Tom Stoppard's 'Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead' did for 'Hamlet'. Nicholas Colt is a great character. It's good he doesn't actually want to kill Reacher. But you feel he could give it a pretty decent shot. Daring and, ultimately, satisfying. With a dash of surreal humor.

By Babette I normally don't read short stories, but decided to give this a try since it had associations with my secret boyfriend, Jack Reacher...and I'm extremely glad i did!!So far, everything I've read from this author has grabbed me from the first paragraph. The only thing I don't care for is the story is over way too fast. He's working his way onto my "Must Read Authors List"!!

Georges Simenon's chilling portrayal of tragic love, persecution and betrayal.'One sensed in him neither flesh nor bone, nothing but soft, flaccid matter, so much so that his movements were hard to make out. Very red lips stood out from his orb-like face, as did the thin moustache that he curled with an iron and looked as if it had been drawn on with India ink; on his cheekbones were the symmetrical pink dots of a doll's cheeks.' People find Mr Hire strange, disconcerting. The tenants he shares his building with try to avoid him. He is a peeping Tom, a visitor of prostitutes, a dealer in unsavoury literature. He is also the prime suspect for a brutal murder that he did not commit. Yet Mr Hire's innocence will not stand in the way of those looking for a scapegoat as tragedy unfolds in this quietly devastating and deeply unnerving novel.'Compelling, remorseless, brilliant.' - John Gray 'One of the greatest writers of the twentieth century . . . Simenon was unequalled at making us look inside, though the ability was masked by his brilliance at absorbing us obsessively in his stories.' - The Guardian 'A supreme writer . . . unforgettable vividness.' - The Independent

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Georges Simenon was born on 12 February 1903 in Liège, Belgium, and died in 1989 in Lausanne, Switzerland, where he had lived for the latter part of his life.

Completed in 1933, Mr Hire’s Engagement is one of Simenon’s early novels. It recreates a scene that the author witnessed as a young reporter in Liège, a scene which continued to haunt him for years afterwards: that of an angry mob, and a man chased on to a roof, clinging to the cornice to keep from falling to his death.

MR HIRE’S ENGAGEMENT

Translated by Anna Moschovakis

1

The concierge cleared her throat before knocking, fixed her eyes on the Belle-Jardinière catalogue in her hand, and announced, ‘A letter for you, Mr Hire.’

She pulled her shawl tight across her chest. Somebody moved behind the brown door: first on the left, then on the right; first footsteps, then a muted rumpling of fabric and the clanking of pots; the concierge’s grey eyes seemed to penetrate the wood in pursuit of the invisible noise. At last it drew near. The key turned. A rectangle of light appeared, a carpet of yellow flowers, the marble of a washstand. A man held out his hand, but the concierge didn’t see it, or not clearly – in any case, she wasn’t paying attention. Her ferreting eyes had settled on another object: a towel soaked in blood, glaring deep red against the cold marble.

The door swung closed gently, of its own accord. The key turned again, and the concierge walked down the four flights of stairs, pausing now and then to think. She was thin; her clothes hung from her like a scarecrow’s rags from its skeleton of sticks. Her nose was damp, her eyelids red, her hands chapped from the cold.

On the other side of the glass-paned door to the concierge’s apartment, a young girl in flannel pyjamas stood in front of a chair with a shallow basin of water on it. Her brother, already dressed, was entertaining himself by splashing her; the table next to them had not been cleared.

Then came the distinct sound of the door opening. The boy turned around. The little girl exhibited a face drenched in tears.

‘What have we here … ?’

A slap for the boy, and his mother shoved him out the door.

‘You, off to school. And you, if you don’t stop crying …’

She grabbed the girl and got her into her dress, tugging on her arms like on a marionette’s. Then she hid the basin of soapy water in the cupboard, walked towards the door, turned around and walked back.

‘Have you finished whining?’

She was thinking, hesitating, her forehead creased, her small eyes worried. She nodded mechanically at the tenant from the second floor as he passed by in the hall; then all of a sudden, she threw on another shawl and hurried out on to the street, first turning down the flame on the stove.

It was freezing out. On the Fontainebleau road, which ran through Villejuif, the cars had slowed to a crawl because of the ice, their radiators exhaling steam. A hundred metres to the left was the main intersection, with a bistro on every corner, a policeman in the middle, busy streets stretching from the suburbs to the gates of Paris, trams, buses, cars. But on the right, two houses down, just past the last garage, it was already open road, the country – trees and fields white with frost.

The concierge shivered, hesitating again. She gestured weakly to a man standing on the corner, but he didn’t see her. She ran up to him and grabbed his arm.

Adams I have read all the Simenon novels that have been translated in English and published in recent years. He was a great writer. I don't understand why Penguin is taking so long to publish more of Simenon novels. They are coming out very slowly.

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. No Magritte in this book! By Ellen Houlihan What a disappointment. Also no character elicits any sympathy in the reader. Dreary setting and plot line. Certainly a book one can put down.
