  • What I enjoy about Schroeder's writing is her ability to successfully integrate an interesting crime with enough details to keep us guessing and give us romance.    Anima, reader review

From the Author I want to thank readers for their support of Task Force Hawaii. When I came up with the idea, I knew I would love it, but I wasn't sure if readers would. I am throughly enjoying the complexity of the plots!MelQ. These are a Harmless spinoff. So, do I need to read the Harmless books?A. No. Although the original meeting of Emma and Del happens in A Little Harmless Rumor, you do not have to read it to enjoy the books.Q. Do I need to read these in order?A. No, but it does lend to the series. The relationships will continue to grow in each book although every character gets their HEA.Q. Is this an interracial/multicultural series?A. Yes and no. There are a multitude of race/ethnic backgrounds in the series, but it is set in Hawaii. The state is filled with a rich cultural that is woven into the books. I would find it odd to read a book set in Hawaii that just had one race.  But, I didn't set out to write an interracial or multicultural series. I planned a series in Hawaii which I assumed would be filled with a culturally diverse team.Q. Can you tell me more about Task Force Hawaii?A. Sure!TASK FORCE HAWAIIAn exciting new romantic suspense series set in Honolulu, Hawaii. Six books filled with danger and passion set against one of the most beautiful destinations in the world.EVEN PARADISE HAS A DARK SIDE.Working with local, state, and federal agencies, the men and women of TASK FORCE HAWAII work on cases ranging from bank heists to high profile murders to terrorism. By Sheri V A romantic suspense that grabbed me and wouldn't let go, Ms. Schroeder shows that she definitely has the skill to write any genre and do it well. This is the start to a new series, that I can't wait to devour as they come out.Del, is a pretty perfect hero, he has moments when he's a bit clueless about women, but at the same time he's dealing with not your typical heroine. He's strong, sexy and definitely a great leader of the TASK FORCE HAWAII team.Emma, doesn't think like everyone else, and it should just make her weird, but instead it makes her perfect to help track down a serial killer. I like that she doesn't really apologize for her differences but instead embraces them. I enjoyed watching Del respond to her quirkiness and fall in love with her despite and maybe even because of them.I adored this story, it had suspense, build up, tension and I couldn't put it down until the very end. I highly recommend it to fans of romantic suspense, Ms. Schroeder gives us one wild ride, that has both great characters and great plot. I look forward to more cases with TASK FORCE HAWAII.

I've loved reading her Harmless series and I was looking forward to this spin-off series. I enjoyed Del and Emma's relationship and watching them work together on solving this killer case as well as finally seeing them give into their feelings for each other. I could not stop reading because the author had me hooked as I rooted for Del, Emma and the entire task force to catch the serial killer and to see Del and Emma get their happy ending. I really enjoyed the bond the team shared and I cannot wait to read the next book.

Once I started, I couldn't stop until I found out who the killer was. I am used to stories from Melissa Schroeder involving romance and great chemistry between characters, but what really drew me into this story was the mystery and suspense of the case. Don't get me wrong, the suspense between Del and Emma kept me wanting more, as well. The entire department of characters were so well written. There was a nice mix of sentimental and sarcasm. I'm hoping to see more of their stories in the future. The case involves a serial killer of women, and there are some dark issues, but it is all written in as respectful a manner as possible. While you have an idea as to what happened to the women, you aren't given graphic detail. I appreciated this, as I didn't want it to be too detailed. You have enough information that you root for the team to find the killer, AND SOON!I haven't read a mystery/suspense/thriller in a long while, and this book reminded me how much I enjoy them. I can't wait until the next in the Task Force Hawaii series comes out. I highly recommend you read this one, before the next comes out!I bought this book at an author convention and couldn't be happier with the purchase.

“A crime of a peculiarly mysterious nature was perpetrated some time last night in a block of flats called Abbey Court.”Lady Judith Carew acted furtively on the night of the Denboroughs’ party. Her secret assignation at 9:30pm was a meeting to which she took a loaded revolver. The Abbey Court apartment building would play host to violent death that very night, under cover of darkness. The killer’s identity remained a mystery, though Lady Carew had a most compelling motive - and her revolver was left in the dead man’s flat…Enter the tenacious Inspector Furnival in the first of his golden age mysteries, first published in 1923. Though there are many clues, there are just as many red herrings and the case takes numerous Christie-esque twists before the murderer can be revealed. This new edition, the first printed in over 80 years, features an introduction from crime fiction historian Curtis Evans.“Annie Haynes does, in The Abbey Court Murder, what all writers of mystery stories aspire to do, and so few carry off successfully… It is a first-rate story… the plot thickens with every page, leading us on to the final climax in a state of unfluctuating interest.” Bookman

    About the Author

Annie Haynes was born in 1865, the daughter of an ironmonger. By the first decade of the twentieth century she lived in London and moved in literary and early feminist circles. Her first crime novel, The Bungalow Mystery, appeared in 1923, and another nine mysteries were published before her untimely death in 1929. Who Killed Charmian Karslake? appeared posthumously, and a further partially-finished work, The Crystal Beads Murder, was completed with the assistance of an unknown fellow writer, and published in 1930.

23 of 23 people found the following review helpful. Goes Down A Treat By Cheryl Leaf I am a big fan of mysteries set in England in the 1920's and written in that time period. The writing here is clean and the mystery is good. No sex, gore or violence, just a good old fashioned mystery. After reading so many current mysteries, reading a book that's more simple and innocent goes down a treat. I wish Furnival had been fleshed out more, but maybe that happens in subsequent books. Can't wait to read more by this author. (Clara Benson is also a fine writer if you like this style.)

18 of 20 people found the following review helpful. I tried. By Techin' It I tried to give this book a chance. I really did. However, I finally threw in the towel and deleted the thing after making it a little past chapter 4 because it was just so darn bad. I would have been incredibly upset if I had paid more than the slightly over a dollar this book cost. The writing reminds me very much of a romance novel trying to disguise itself as a mystery thriller--lots of our heroine sighing and fainting and wringing her hands, a mysterious male stranger who will never let her go, agonizing over her true love which is at stake, violence prompted by lost affection, etc. Basically, very hackneyed and just generally silly, but not even in a pleasurable sort of way. There are plenty of books that start off a bit iffy, but there's at least some sort of draw to make you want to work through to the meat of the plot... not so here. There wasn't even enough vaguely interesting material to try and make this a "I'm going to finish this damn book on principle!" read. The editing also very much leaves something to be desired, which looks like it may actually be from the author herself (my assumption because the modern introduction was written just fine). I am only exaggerating a little bit when I say the writing format is as follows:* One small run-on paragraph held together via comma splice* One small paragraph consisting of a long sentence broken up with a semicolon* RepeatWhy? Who knows. Perhaps it was just a quirk of the author. It was incredibly distracting, however, and made me want to bring out a red pen and mark up my Kindle. The book description tries to make a comparison between Annie Haynes and Agatha Christie. Thanks to the history provided by the introduction, the only way I can possibly see any sort of comparison is that they briefly were published by the same publishing house and were both women. At the risk of sounding harsh, I think that there may have been a reason why interest in this author dropped off immediately after her death. There are many, many other books that are much more enjoyable to read, and there are plenty of other golden-era mystery authors that are worth bringing back into print. In my opinion this one is not one of them.I will say this, however: if sloppy writing is not a deal-breaker for you and if you tend to enjoy both bodice rippers and low-key thrillers, then you might like this book at least enough to spend a few hours on it. This book would probably also be of interest to those who favor the "cozy mystery" category.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Old-Fashioned Romance-Mystery By Happy Reader Lady Judith Carew and her husband, Sir Anthony Carew, only married a short time themselves, have arrived for a society wedding at St. Peter's, London. While they're loitering outside, waiting their turn to go in, two men try to pass through the wedding crowd on their way down the street. "Both men, though they wore the conventional frockcoat and silk hat, had the look of travellers, or colonials, with their thin bronzed faces."One of the men passing stops short at the sight of Judith. And no wonder, as she's described: "As Lady Carew smiled, it was noticeable that the whole character of her face altered. In repose it was cold, even a little melancholy, but the smile revealed unexpected possibilities, the big hazel eyes melted and deepened, the mouth softened into new curves."But it's more than her beauty that has stopped the man. He dares to rudely accost her, and Lady Carew's response is agonized, "But you – I thought you were dead."Not only has someone come back from the dead, but he is a threat to Lady Carew's reputation and happiness. Wouldn't it be fortunate if he turned up dead a second time? Yes, in a mystery book it surely would!Annie Haynes had 10 mysteries published between 1923 and 1929. According to the Introduction, it's noted that during the 20s she was compared to Agatha Christie. But her body of work was already mostly forgotten by the 30s.I think "The Abbey Court Murders" is an old-fashioned mystery, leaning more towards a romance. It even has the old chestnut of a birthmark identifying a lost heir, though to be fair, maybe it wasn't so overused in 1923. For a bunch of the book the murder mystery is forgotten while it turns into Pride & Prejudice. But the main reason why I wasn't overly impressed with this mystery is that the solution is easy to figure out, which makes the ending seem drawn-out.The book is nicely written, with a little repetition. But the plotting is just OK for me, which is 3 stars. I give "The Abbey Court Murders" 3.4 stars, rounded down to 3.Happy Reader

    THIS WASN’T SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN

I never thought for a million years I’d be in a town so small that it doesn’t even exist on a map. I never thought for a million years I’d set foot in an outlaw biker club house. I certainly never thought that I’d jump into bed with one of them… Arrogant, cocky, and wickedly handsome underneath all his tattoos and leather, Vance Coldman is every one of my sinful fantasies come true. The word ‘no’ isn’t a part of his vocabulary, not out here in the desert where violence is law and might is right. I’ve never gotten a chance to sample his dark forbidden world. Not until now. But something tells me that he intends on giving me more than just a glimpse. … and that he doesn’t plan on holding back. ~~~ Violence is law and might is right in my world. A man will do everything he can to defend his property—be it his bike or his woman. Out here, a man makes his own luck. That’s the way I’ve lived. Anything else is just slavery with a better name. So when she’s asking for a taste of my world, she’s getting it all. But what she doesn’t seem to understand is this: When you step into my world, you’re not leaving. Not now, not later. NOT EVER This is a full length standalone romance novel with a guaranteed HEA ending and NO CLIFFHANGERS!

Yup, super models everywhere ride into no name towns, pick up hot guys, don't use condoms and fall in love. Just like Gisele and Tom. So, the characters were ludicrous, the sex was meh, and the MC plot was not well done. What MC sends the potential President or VP into hiding?

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Worst MC book Ever By fbmom Since when EVER does a biker run and hide from trouble??? NEVER!! And calling a MC club anything with word "boys" in it is just ludicrous, not to mention the number of times they were referred to as a Gang as opposed to a Club......this story was just wrong on so many levels

Vance and Maya hit it off from the beginning and wile there is mutual attraction, they know they can't be together. But love conquers all. Really good story with lots of drama and tons of steam.

This novel benefits from her personal knowledge of the world of horse racing. What I liked most was the puzzle itself. Every discovery made by the police seems to deepen the mystery. The actions of some of the characters behind the scenes, which we witness but the police don't, obscure the truth even more. The murder victim is Sir John Burslem, financial magnate, popular philanthropist and owner of this year's Derby favorite. He has a lovely young wife, who behaves suspiciously after his murder, a pretty daughter who hates the young wife, a disagreeable brother who's off exploring Tibet, and a vulgar sister-In-law who claims to be in touch with Sir John beyond the grave. Spiritualism had its fervent advocates and debunkers in the twenties, and seances play an interesting role in the plot of this novel. The investigator, Inspector Stoddart, rails against theories and often chastises his assistant detective for indulging in conjectures. Yet all along he's playing with a theory of his own, which he shares with no one!The story culminates in a dramatic courtroom scene, and the denouement is full of surprises. The detective novels of Annie Haynes, which came out between 1923 and 1930, were much admired in her day. Today Haynes is mostly read by scholars and readers (like me) on the lookout for obscure Golden Age mystery writers. I'm in the process of reading all the Annie Haynes mysteries. This is a very good one, and includes an excellent introduction by a crime fiction scholar.

Well written. The first thing I noticed in the first book by this author had an absolutely correct bit of grammar on the first page. I checked the copyright and it said 1975 or so and I thought: no, it can't be! Of course it wasn't that must have been the copyright for the ebook. These were indeed written a century ago and the English education of that time showed in the authors writing.

From Publishers Weekly This shrewd, unsentimental mystery features a multipart denouement, masterfully extended and deftly manipulated to segue into an examination of a family gone awry. In November 1990, plucky London-based television researcher Alex Tanner begins to investigate the decades-old unsolved murder of Lord Sherwin; she relies on the assistance (or is it manipulation?) of the former governess to the nobleman's children. Tanner interrogates such suspects as Sherwin's cold wife, their icy daughter, a fading actor, a nubile niece and even the governess herself before a sudden, unexpected confession abruptly terminates her work. Tanner believes the confession, with reservations, but then Sherwin's granddaughter goes missing and the emotional balance of the book subtly shifts. Sad details about Alex's childhood emerge as her hard-boiled exterior, which she has developed through copious readings of American crime fiction, starts to crack, and small crimes of coldness and cruelty replace the larger ones of murder and passion. Donald's ( Poor Dear Charlotte ) young, street-smart female sleuth, a rare breed in contemporary British crime fiction, is an appealing protagonist. Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.

An Uncommon Murder By S Riaz First published in 1992, this is the first in the ‘Notting Hill Mysteries’ featuring freelance television researcher Alex Tanner. Alex is a product of the foster care system and has learned to stand on her own two feet. Prickly, independent and only willing to hide her own opinions when looking for work, she is an interesting and sympathetic character. Having deduced that writer, and documentary maker, Barty O’Neill is interested in the ‘Sherwin Murder,’ when Lord Sherwin was shot and killed during a Hunt Ball in the 1950’s; Alex manages to rescue the family governess, Miss Sarah Potter, from being mugged and then offers to write the story for Barty in return for a cut and a co-credit.Miss Potter claims that she knows what happened that fateful night, but, in return for her story, asks that Alex helps her track down Lord Sherwin’s missing granddaughter – rather unkindly nicknamed ‘Toad.’ Alex has to overcome her prejudices, while delving into the story of a group of people she dismisses as spoilt and privileged and discovers that unhappy families are unhappy no matter how wealthy they are. This is rather a traditional mystery, but none the worse for that. I enjoyed the bantering and mind games between the elderly Miss Potter and Alex. Some of the characters did come across as a little stereotypical, but I was enjoying the story so much that I was happy to forgive any minor flaws as I found the novel so enjoyable. The author deftly entwined the storylines of the investigation into a murder in 1958 and that of a missing girl at the time this novel was set. I enjoyed the various characters; including Barty and his glamorous deb assistant and Alex’s neighbour. In fact, I enjoyed this so much that I downloaded the next in the series. If you are interested in reading on, the next book is “In at the Deep End,” followed by “The Glass Ceiling,” “The Loop” and “Destroy Unopened.” Lastly, I received a copy of this book from the publisher, via NetGalley, for review.

When I first started it I did find it hard to get into, but as I read on and placed it in a time frame and got to understand the main character Alex - I found I really liked Alex and I had a lot of empathy for the character. The story evolved in bit and pieces, but having said that, it was very cohesive. The mystery was just very different and reminded me of books written in the golden age - very satisfactory. The characters felt real and produced distinct feeling towards them - like or dislike.

By Kindle Customer Interesting story where the murder happened 20 years ago and many of the people who were around at the time have also died. Alex Tanner is not sure where the story will go but she goes to see Miss Potter who was agoverness to the Lord's children at the time he was killed and may know something. Miss Potter is living alone and wants the company so tells Alex just enough about the time to get her to come back. Ans so the story goes.
