20 of 20 people found the following review helpful. This is the finest volume of Sherlockian fiction I have ever read, and I have read, literally, thousands. By Philip K. Jones This book is the first of a series of three Sherlockian anthology volumes from MX Publications and it includes stories set in the period 1881 through 1889. All of the authors have donated their royalties for this publication to the support of Undershaw. The first volume includes twenty-three short stories and one poemThe poem is “Sherlock Holmes of London,” by Michael Kurland, a set of four quatrains that effectively invoke the place where “…it is always 1895.” Most of the rest of the tales are short stories. “The Adventure of the Slipshod Charlady,” by John Hall, is the first effort I know of to tell the Untold Tale of “... a slipshod elderly woman” cited in STUD. “The Case of the Lichfield Murder,” by Hugh Ashton, tells of the grisly case of “…Henry Staunton, whom I helped to hang,” cited in MISS. “The Kingdom of the Blind,” by Adrian Middleton, shows the true reason for the Vatican’s Index Librorem Prohibitorem, the evils that these books stir up in the credulous. “The Adventure of the Pawnbroker’s Daughter,” by David Marcum, gives us a glimpse of true evil, wrapped in an enticing package. “The Adventure of the Defenestrated Princess,” by Jayantika Ganguly, shows us Holmes and Watson coping with the tribulations of a love-sick 16-year-old Princess, grimly determined to fulfil her duty to marry while pursued by five aged suitors grimly determined to secure her considerable dowry and her father’s political influence.“The Adventure of the Inn on the Marsh,” by Dennis O. Smith takes me back to his “Chronicles” collections in what is, perhaps, his best tale yet. “The Adventure of the Travelling Orchestra,” by Amy Thomas, deserved to be, at least, a novella. Her intense characters and their complications need more space to unfold than was available in this shortened format. “The Haunting of Sherlock Holmes,” by Kevin David Barratt, vividly shows an important but neglected side of the Holmes/Watson relationship. “The Allegro Mystery,” by Luke Benjamen Kuhns, tells the tale of Holmes’ effort to furnish Watson with a wife in the midst of a mystery. “The Deadly Soldier,” by Summer Perkins, gives us a perfect picture of the meeting of The Professor and Colonel Sebastian Moran. “The Case of the Vanishing Stars,” by Deanna Baran, introduces Holmes and Watson into the world of the Music Halls, where a widowed performer/owner is coping with a variety of problems.“The Song of the Mudlark,” by Shane Simmons, is told by Wiggins, as he introduces us to the newest Irregular who is taking a giant step up from the occupation of mudlark. “The Tale of the Forty Thieves,” by C. H. Dye, tells the Untold Tale of the Paradol Chamber as cited in FIVE and does so most imaginatively. “The Strange Missive of Germaine Wilkes,” by Mark Mower, recounts Watson’s first introduction to the problem of Professor Moriarty. In “The Case of the Vanished Killer,” by Derrick Belanger, we are introduced to “Buffalo Bill” Cody when Inspector Lestrade suspects some of Cody’s Indians may have committed a double murder. “The Adventure of the Aspen Papers,” by Daniel D. Victor, brings Henry James to ask Sherlock’s help with a problem that ultimately inspires him to write a novel. “The Ululation of Wolves,” by Steve Mountain, poses an insidious locked-room Mystery for Holmes, with a pack of wolves thrown in to cloud the matter further. “The Case of the Vanishing Inn,” by Stephen Wade, tells of a terrifying encounter with the Professor by Watson and Inspector Lestrade. “The King of Diamonds,” by John Sherwood, involves Holmes and Watson in a poisoning case that the police have blamed on the obvious suspects on circumstantial evidence. “The Adventure of the Urquhart Manse,” by Will Thomas, presents an “obvious” mystery then quickly wanders off into a strange byway.Casual readers of the Sherlockian tales are generally not aware that there is a problem involving “The Adventure of the Second Stain (SECO).” This tale is mentioned in two earlier tales, “The Yellow Face” (YELL) and “The Naval Treaty” (NAVA), but those citations do NOT describe the tale of that name published in December, 1904. In “The Adventure of the Seventh Stain,” the only novella in this volume, Daniel McGachey explains in great detail both that problem and the investigation of “The First Adventure of the Second Stain (SEC1).” “The Two Umbrellas,” by Martin Rosenstock, tells of an enigmatic encounter between Mycroft Holmes and Professor Moriarty over a matter of espionage. “The Adventure of the Fateful Malady,” by Craig Janacek, involves Holmes and Watson with a recurrence of the Black Death and tells the Untold tale of his “professional service … for Sir James Saunders (SIRJ)” as cited in BLAN.This first volume, on its own, is the finest anthology of Sherlockian fiction I have ever read. All of the stories were interesting and readable and several were outstanding. The last Sherlockian fiction I felt to be outstanding was Neil Gaiman’s “A Study in Emerald,” and it won a Hugo. I look forward eagerly to reading Volumes 2 and 3.Reviewed by: Philip K. Jones, October, 2015

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Beyond impressive! By Ye Olde Ed There have been some impressive anthologies of brand new Sherlock Holmes stories over the past 20 years or so (thank you, Mike Ashley, David Stuart Davies, Martin Greenberg et al.) but this one goes beyond impressive. Not just in quantity - more than 60 stories in three handsome volumes - but in consistent quality. And no wonder, given the quality of the contributors. Here are some - most - of the best, most dedicated Holmesian authors working today, from all four corners of the world. Stories by Andrew Lane, Lyndsay Faye, Larry Millett, Carole Nelson Douglas, Bert Coules, Denis O Smith, Michael Kurland, Amy Thomas, James Lovegrove, Daniel D Victor, Matthew Booth, Peter Calamai, David Stuart Davies, Matthew J Elliott, Paul D Gilbert, John Hall, Jim French, Phil Growick, Bonnie MacBird, Tim Symonds... and twice as many again. Top stuff! And there's more... Neither the publisher, the hard-working editor, nor any of the contributors will make a penny out of it. All royalties will go towards the preservation and restoration of Undershaw, the house built in Surrey for himself and his family by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This is a splendid venture for a great cause!

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. If you liked the original Holmes and Watson By EpisodicReader I've read only the first volume, but it's a really neat anthology and I've already given it as a gift to a friend. The authors have adopted the style of Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories, and have each written something sufficiently plausible so that if it could really be an undiscovered Holmes short story. Reading through the whole collection is therefore a delight. Some of the stories are better than others, often because of clever plots coupled with accurate historical research about the time period. Marcum's and Victor's offerings are my favorites, but I recommend the whole anthology and I look forward to the other volumes.

Untold, by Tammy J Witherspoon

About the Author Tammy Witherspoon is an award winning, 17-year veteran reporter at The Advertiser in Eldon, Missouri. She tried to write her first novel when she was eight, though it was suspiciously like a cross between Gone With the Wind and Superman. She loves good books, good theatre, and cheesy science fiction.

Once I started I couldn't stop; read the entire thing in one afternoon/evening.Great mystery! I had no clue whodunit until the very end! I can't wait for the next adventure from Ms. Witherspoon!

Hansson A small-town investigative reporter, having made solid and trusting relationships with a wide variety of people and disciplines is invited to the scene of a body dump. There are basically 3 story lines braided together, crossing paths and sometimes meeting up with blind curves. I look forward to the next book from Tammy Witherspoon.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I loved the story line By Donna W. Kelly I loved the story line. I was not sure where the book was headed , however, it certainly held my interest. I was fascinated by the main character "Seals" and her relationship with all of the characters. "Seals" appears as a reporter, detective, friend and confidante. Someone who is curious, loving and determined. I found her to be the most complex of the characters. Bottom line...I enjoyed this book very much and I am sure Ms. Witherspoon will write another book..

Christmas at Canterville! Lisa Wellman and Simon Canterville are surprised to find a dead man on their roof in the midst of rushing to open the Canterville Book Shop in time for the holidays. And not just any dead man – Ebenezer Hart – the man who opposed the book shop opening in Olde Town, Portsmouth, Virginia. What might be more surprising is when Daniel Fairhaven – Lisa’s ex – turns up at the door of the three-story Victorian house to head the police investigation. She hasn’t seen him in years but the sparks start to fly as soon as they are in the same room together. Simon and Lisa are obviously the best suspects for the murder. Each of them had something to gain by Hart’s death. Then an attempt on Simon’s life throws that theory into a tailspin. But the biggest surprise yet comes when the ghost of Charles Dickens turns up to help Lisa with the murder investigation – and writing the mystery novel she has been working on for years. Without a doubt, Daniel and Dickens in Lisa’s life means trouble. And there’s still the matter of trying to get the book shop open with a killer on their heels.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. A Dickens Of A Murder By Gram Tess This is, hands down, the most difficult review I have ever written. The cozy mystery family has lost one of their shining stars. On October 20, Joyce Lavene departed this world, she left so quickly that no goodbyes were said. My thoughts and love go out to Jim, their children and their grandchildren. Joyce was not only an author, she was a friend. She loved her fans as we loved her.Blessed Be Joyce, I miss you.Lisa and Simon are rushing to get their new book shop ready and open by the start of the upcoming holidays. Things are going very well until a dead man is found on the roof of their house. Who, how , why? Who? is Ebenezer Hart. How? is under investigation. Why? Was it because he was against the book shop? Lisa and Simon were, of course, suspects, until someone tries to kill Simon. Add to the book shop, the murder, the last thing they need is for the ghost of Charles Dickens to pop in.Again, I can't understand how the Lavenes do it. With over 60 books published, they just kept on writing, the stories seem endless.I have heard that Jim plans on finishing the books they had started, but I'm not sure about the future. Jim and the family need to get used to their new normal before decisions can be made.FTC Full Disclosure - A copy of this book was sent to me by the publisher in hopes I would review it. However, receiving the complimentary copy did not influence my review.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Loved it!! By April Schilling Lisa Wellman loves books. For years she was a librarian for the Portsmouth Public Library but when personal tragedy as well as a wonderful opportunity changes her life, she is ready. Lisa joins with Simon Canterville to open a book shop in his wonderful old home while writing her novel in her spare time. What could be a better way to help her get through her mother's death, right? Well, that was before the dead body was found hanging from the roof. And if that wasn't enough, her ex husband is the lead detective on the case and Charles Dickens is a rather annoying distraction as well. Now Lisa has to help her ex-husband figure out who is trying to stop the shop from opening, work on getting the shop ready to open and help Charles Dickens finish his last novel. This was such a delightful story! I loved all of the characters and it was wonderful to see guest stars from other series. I am really looking forward to seeing how the book shop works out for Lisa and Simon as well as seeing what happens with her novel. This one was especially touching for me as it was dedicated to Joyce. I think she would be thrilled to know Jim will continue the books. She loved words as much as we love reading them.***I received an advance reader copy of the book in exchange for an honest review****

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Loved my visit to the Canterville Book Shop By PATucker I opened this book, went inside and did not want to leave. The characters, setting and story made for a wonderful read.Lisa Wellman and Simon Canterville are opening a book shop (Canterville Book Shop) in Simon's lovely Victorian home, in Olde Town Portsmouth, VA. Some oppose the opening and one, Ebenezer Hart, is found dead on Simon's roof. Deputy Chief Daniel Fairhaven, Lisa's ex-husband shows up to lead the investigation. Though divorced for twelve years, Lisa is still attracted to him. Just when Lisa thinks things couldn't get worse, the ghost of Charles Dickens appears. (I loved their interaction and found myself laughing at his antics.)An attempt on Simon's life, an unpleasant meeting with Simon's son (Ashcroft) and the suspicion of others, leads Lisa to use her budding mystery author skills to search for the killer.I loved Simon's eccentricities, the fondness between him and Lisa and their pets (cats-Truffles, Maggie May and Puck, along with bulldog pup, Wordsworth). I would love to live in the book shop, too! This book was dedicated to Joyce Lavene, who passed away October 20, 2015. She will be greatly missed.

Originally appearing in the pages of Black Mask Magazine, author Carroll John Daly pioneered the hard-boiled P.I. story and perfected the genre with his classic character Race Williams. Apart from the novel-length Race Williams stories, these classic hard-boiled thrillers have rarely been reprinted, if ever. Volume 1 contains the first 16 Race Williams stories, all from 1923-26 issues of Black Mask: ''Knights of the Open Palm,'' ''$3,000 to the Good,'' ''The Red Peril,'' ''Them That Lives By Their Guns,'' ''Devil Cat,'' ''The Face Behind the Mask,'' ''Conceited, Maybe,'' ''Say It With Lead!,'' ''I'll Tell the World,'' ''Alias Buttercup,'' ''Under Cover,'' ''South Sea Steel,'' ''The False Clara Burkhart,'' ''The Super-Devil,'' ''Half-Breed,'' and ''Blind Alleys.'' Three additional, early, first-person hard-boiled stories by Daly which laid the groundwork for the Race Williams are included as well: ''Dolly,'' ''Paying an Old Debt,'' and ''The False Burton Combs,'' as well as editorial pieces by Daly himself on his inspirations, writing style, and advice to prospective writers. And it's prefaced by an all-new, scholarly introduction by Professor Brooks Hefner of James Madison University. Them That Lives By Their Guns: The Collected Hard-Boiled Stories of Race Williams Volume 1 is the most important release in years on the history of the Hard-Boiled Detective story.

The stories speak for themselves, and anyone buying this probably knows what they’re getting, so there’s no sense reviewing the stories. Brooks Hefner’s introduction is very good and the reader gets a lot of stories for his money, maybe too many. The size of the book is such that a hard cover edition is called for. Either that or an eBook edition. Despite having already purchased the softcover, I’d buy the eBook just for the convenience. Let's hope that Altus reprints the novels as well as the stories? Looking forward to volume 2

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Race Williams is one tough private eye! By Walker A. Martin This is a must buy book for any lover of the hard-boiled detective story. Not because Daly's writing is great but because he has the reputation of having created the hard-boiled tale. He was the first to write tough guy fiction and beat Dashiell Hammett to it by several months. The BLACK MASK magazine back issues containing these stories would not only be very expensive but they are simply not available due to their extreme rarity. The Race Williams stories have a certain flair and style to them and some readers even find them too tough. It's rumored that Daly influenced Mickey Spillane. I've read his stories were not liked by the editor of BLACK MASK but they were printed because the readers loved them. You should read these stories with a loaded .45 next to you. If you don't like them, you can pump bullets into the book and feel a lot better.

Who was James Putnam? Answering that question may mean salvation for Alexander Rupert, a Minnesota detective whose life is in a serious downward spiral. A Medal of Valor winner, Alexander is now under subpoena by a grand jury on suspicion of corruption. He’s been reassigned to the Frauds Unit, where he is shunned by his fellow detectives, and he fears his status-seeking wife may be having an affair. When he happens across a complex case of identity theft, Alexander sees an opportunity to rehabilitate his tattered reputation. But the case explodes into far more than he could have expected, putting him in the path of trained assassin Drago Basta, a veteran of the Balkan wars who has been searching for “James Putnam” for years. As his life spins out of control, Alexander’s last hope may be his older brother, Max, a fellow police detective who steps in to try to save his brother from the carnage his investigation has let loose.

The Guise of Another, by Allen Eskens

Review “Eskens’s elegant but chilly prose, like winter in the blood, is well suited to this fiercely told morality tale (and its deeply cynical ending), which is sure to send all of us wretched sinners straight to hell.”—NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW"Readers looking for a new voice should pay attention to Eskens.”—Publishers Weekly STARRED REVIEW"With just two books to his name, I have put [Eskens] on my ‘must read’ list.”—Deadly Pleasures“Eskens has conjured up a marvelously black spirit of a novel. It’s a taut, intelligent, heart-ripping story that explores the darkest places in the human psyche. After each unexpected twist, you’ll tell yourself things can’t get any worse. And then they do.”   ―WILLIAM KENT KRUEGER, New York Times–bestselling author of the Edgar® Award–winning Ordinary Grace“The talented Allen Eskens fulfills the rich promise of his Edgar®-nominated debut with this chilling, dark, and sinister thriller. With precision and authority, Eskens’s determined cop hero takes one intriguing clue—and pursues it into spiraling disaster. With a deadly surprise around every corner and a bleak undercurrent of noir-like dread, this book will haunt you.”    —HANK PHILLIPPI RYAN, Agatha, Anthony, and Mary Higgins Clark Award–winning author of Truth Be Told“Another great, dark, and brooding page-turner from Allen Eskens, with a tragic protagonist who will break your heart. Accused of keeping money from a drug raid, he's about to face the charges in court. Meanwhile he's on hold in a dead-end job in the Frauds Unit. Then an intriguing case comes his way, and nobody else recognizes its importance. Alexander sees this as a chance to redeem himself. There is a high body count in this novel, thanks to the cold-blooded disregard for life of a killer from Kosovo. Drago Basta is one of the baddest villains I've encountered in fiction. He's so resourceful he appears to be unstoppable.Integrity among the characters is in scarce supply. Greed and corruption are rampant. But there are two admirable cops whose heroic actions we follow with bated breath -- Alexander's brother Max and a feisty woman cop from Manhattan who's helping Alexander investigate. (The novel is set in Minnesota.)For a police procedural, this is a somewhat edgy novel, because it's much more complex than good guys vs. bad guys. There's lots of action, and many a plot twist, but I was unhappy to see my favorite person die. Still, this is a well-done thriller with vividly realized characters. Best for readers who can handle dark plots.

Didn't work for me By OlyNomad I really liked this author's The Life We Bury, to the point he was the first author I followed on here, so when I saw his next book was out I was excited to read it and even put it at the top of my reading pile when it came. But the difference between the two books was day and night for me and I struggled to read this one and finally gave up. The Life We Bury felt fresh and original with characters I was drawn to, the characters in this book felt unoriginal, no real depth to them and like ones I've read about a hundred times before. I was losing interest in the story because of that and then a line a female character gave a male character was so unrealistic and cheesy and it was the point I gave up on the book. It felt like a scene out of your standard action movie where the female is one dimensional, there just as eye candy and unrealistic. The premise of the story was actually pretty interesting, but the characters bogged it down for me.

A twisted path of clues By Divascribe The accidental death of a man named James Putnam sets off a chain of events involving corporate corruption, murder and the hunt for an incriminating thumb drive by a relentless serial killer in this second novel by Allen Eskens. It's the story of two brothers who are Minneapolis cops -- Max Rupert, a respected detective, and Alexander Rupert, also a detective, who's been under a cloud of suspicion since a drug bust went wrong. As the story opens, he's awaiting a session with the grand jury that may end in him being charged with corruption.James Putnam is killed when a Lexus slams head-on into his Porsche. Before he dies, he whispers, "Find it before they find her." And Alexander, who winds up with the case, sees it as a chance at redemption. He follows a trail of clues to New York and the Midwest, because the man calling himself James Putnam was actually someone else. And the real James Putnam supposedly died years ago.I found this a fast, satisfying read with well-developed characters. There are plenty of shades of gray in this book -- almost no one is free of deception. Drago, the hired hitman, is truly despicable, but even he has brief flashes of decency. Unlike many mystery novels these days, this is not part of a series. But it works well as a stand-alone book.
