When a reporter for the Washington Post sees a group of wounded, half-starved, black troops disembark from a helicopter in Cu Chi during the height of the Vietnam War, he senses a story, but receives no cooperation from the army or the soldiers. The men, mostly noncombat soldiers, are the remnant of a squad sent on an illegal mission to Cambodia as punishment for their participation in a race riot at Cu Chi base camp. Led by a battle-fatigued sergeant, they fall under enemy fire. Their leader inexplicably disappears, leaving the ill-prepared soldiers to fight the jungle and enemy on their own. Although forced to confront the shock of combat and a deteriorating family life, the reporter pursues the story hoping to uncover the truth about what happened to those soldiers in the jungle. An intriguing glimpse into the Vietnam War, A Long Way Back is a tense journey merging the lives of the soldiers and the reporter as they struggle to overcome their fear and face the battles they must fight to survive.

A Long Way Back, by J. Everett Prewitt

Review (A) fine novel. This novel takes an important place on the small shelf of African-American Vietnam War novels...the book is well worth reading. -- Vietnam Veterans of America Books in ReviewA Long Way Back by J. Everett Prewitt is an excellent read that follows a postreporter who is sent to Vietnam to report on the war effort. What he uncoversis the disgusting truth about race in the military and a cover-up designed toprotect those in power, while ensuring those who were betrayed are neverallowed to have a voice...The book's ability to fairly, and accurately tackleboth issues is impressive. J. Everett Prewitt is an excellent writer and hiswriting style is realistic, intense, and seems to accurately capture the timeperiod and military life...This book does everything well including pacing, character development, and the storyline itself. It is clear that Prewitt is agood author who is well within his wheelhouse on this one...Prewitt has created apowerfully moving novel with A Long Way Back....this is an intelligently crafted tale, brimming with both suspense and social commentary. --Kirkus ReviewsA Long Way Back is a riveting story set in Vietnam in the 1960s. It captures the ugliness of war and racism, but is much more a page-turning story of brotherhood, determination, and survival. --Barbara Hacha, AuthorI found your novel A Long Way Back to be a compelling recounting of the war from the perspective of black soldiers --Anita Bunkley, Author

Kavouras Prewitt skillfully shows us a Vietnam that few people heard about and even fewer saw. You will be alternately shocked and ready to root for these beleaguered soldiers. More important, though, Prewitt offers an alternate view of an unpopular war. Without authentic voices like this to give us alternate views, all we have left is history.

This was a story set during the Vietnam war that focuses a group of black troops who were sent to combat under difficult circumstances. It goes into details about their stories and reports on their lives and mission and what they had to go through in order to survive. Definitely a thoughtful reflection on what happened and I found myself learning a great deal about their ordeal. An important piece of history, I would highly recommend it.

Powerful By Literary Classics Book Reviews A Long Way Back is the gripping tale of a group of Black American soldiers and one young man determined to bring their story to light. When Anthony, a Washington Post news reporter sent to cover the war in Vietnam, witnesses the return of seven soldiers from a mission he senses a story. The soldiers, bedraggled and severely shell-shocked, are met with stunned silence. It seems the other men at base camp seem shocked to learn the men made it back alive. Anthony feels certain this is a story the Post would want him to cover, but he is refused the opportunity to speak to anyone. He hears hushed rumors of the men having been sent on an illegal mission to Cambodia; but under threat of court-martial, no one will divulge any information about the mission, or the fate of the others who never returned.Author, J. Everett Prewitt’s vivid depiction of the horrors of war are compounded when intertwined with the racial injustices perpetrated upon the men whose story Anthony hopes to reveal. A Long Way Back is a powerful and compelling novel. - Recommended for home and school libraries.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. 4 1/2 stars Is this the end of the series? By elaine I love this series and am afraid this may be the concluding chapter. All the loose ends seem to have been tied up and the author seems to be moving on to a new series. If so, this ending felt a little flat after the other rousing entries in the series. The writing is as crisp and enjoyable as ever, Georgia as irrepressible as usual, and the secondary cast wonderful. I did not give it 5 stars because I was disappointed with how things wrapped up and how we got there. First, Blackford is missing for a good chunk of the book, off in America tending to his business affairs there. We left the last book with him not willing to marry Georgia due to her middle class status, despite the obvious attraction and fondness between them, and Georgia refusing to be his mistress, knowing that can only lead to heartache since he will eventually have to marry to produce the ducal heir. This tension is left hanging for a good part of the book and I missed the interactions between Georgia and Blackford. Then, when he returns, the book fails to capture the entertaining interactions revealed and developed in the prior installments. Something was just missing. Spoiler: Blackford proposes to Georgia because his visit to America showed him that a new world order is coming about. This rationale fell flat and was, quite frankly, not very inspiring on the romance side. Also, Blackford did not seem as emotionally connected as he had in prior installments. Georgia agrees to marry after some soul-searching, but the sense of romance, enjoyment in each other’s company, and physical attraction that was in prior books was just not there. Georgia continues to hunt for her parents' killer. She resolves that issue and—Spoiler-- the killer dies after a few surprising revelations. But even that resolution seemed forced and unsatisfying. We never really understand his motives and the manner of his death seems over-contrived. Finally, the resolution of the mystery that moves the book alone also seemed forced. All in all, I enjoyed the book but this is probably my least favorite of the series. It was good to see how things concluded, but the whole thing seemed forced on a number of fronts.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I have loved every book in this series. By Lori Caswell/Dollycas Dollycas’s ThoughtsI am so sorry to see this series ending. It truly is one of my favorites. Kate has wrapped things up with a magnificent bow.The Archivist Society has a new case. A woman and her son are missing and strangely the husband only wants his son found. This raises many flags for Georgia especially when the mother is murdered. Sir Edward becomes her prime suspect. She travels all over London to find the boy and when she finds him she has huge reservations about reuniting him with his father. The Duke of Blackford is traveling about America and Georgia can’t wait until he returns. She is afraid he may have found a bride while he was gone. His letters don’t ease her fears.Kate Parker transports us to Victorian England. The imagery is superb. I don’t think I could ever live in England with all that rain but the cover of the book looks so inviting at this time of year. The characters in the series are some of the most enjoyable I have known. Georgia seems to have no fear and her inquisitive nature makes her a top-notch sleuth. Blackford is quite a gentleman and needs a woman like Georgia. Sir Broderick deals with a disability on a daily basis but leads The Archivist Society and negotiates the sales of treasured books better than anyone else could. As a disabled person myself it is so good to read about a man like him. All of the characters are wonderfully created and so full of depth. In addition to the missing boy mystery, the author also wraps up the mystery of Georgia Fenchurch parent’s death and the incident that left Sir Broderick in a wheelchair. I was very surprised with the way this played out. What people would do for a rare book is just astounding.Things do wrap up quickly because the author did not want to leave her readers hanging. When a publisher ends a series the author often doesn’t know until the last book has been released. I applaud Kate Parker for self publishing this last book. I would love to read more about these characters but am excited to know she has a new series in the works. She shares the first chapter of Deadly Scandal with us and it looks very promising. The trips back in time are so captivating. I recommend reading this series in order to follow the progression but they each can be read on their own. Thank you Kate for sharing Georgia and her friends with us.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Return to the Victorian Bookshop By Kay Hudson The Conspiring Woman is the fourth in Kate Parker’s Victorian Bookshop Mystery series, continuing the adventures of Georgia Fenchurch and the Archivist Society. With the Duke of Blackford off touring his American investments, Georgia undertakes the search for a missing child and his mother. When Lady Hale is found dead, the Archivists soon discover that she’s not the only wealthy, and unhappy, wife to disappear in recent months. Where is her little boy? And what’s become of those missing women? Georgia finds some surprising answers in her search for a killer—and then the Duke comes home.I hope there will be more Victorian Bookshop Mysteries, but in the meantime The Conspiring Woman wraps up some questions that have run through the series and sets Georgia on a new path.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Good for return readers but I wouldn't start with this book. By Anon This book was written better than most of the books in the willow crossing mysteries, and it gets a +1 for that but the plot of the book was sort of boring. I had to knock it down to 4 stars because this book simply didn't appeal to me as much as some of the others. I'd recommend this book after trying one of the other mysteries by Willow Crossing and if you enjoyed it then picking this one up.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Fair plot, thin characters By Cmd The plot line was okay but the book on the whole needs better editing. The objective case of the pronoun I is me, something many writers don't seem to know these days. The switch between tenses, present to past, is inconsistent and annoying. Characters need a little more development. Not up to her other books, needs to be fleshed out.

Defending Her Honor By You can call me Lynn This is a book is a mixture of Political Intrigue, Police Procedural, and Romance genres.Nicole is a mother of three who was once defended by Theresa Banks. Now, Nicole feels she should return the favor. She starts out by standing up to a potential threat on the election campaign. Where she ends up is in a whole lot of trouble that has her crisscrossing Maryland. This book delves into many aspects of seedier side of politics and in some ways compares and contrasts it with Nicole's naive view of law and people. In some ways, I could see this book becoming a made for television or possibly getting on the big screen.Warning: This book is for Mature Audiences due to Violence, Adult Language, and Sexual Situations.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Good writing keeps you guessing. By Helen Harden I never knew who could be trusted in this intricate plot involving legal eagles and corruption in high places. I was fascinated by the writer's powers of observation and attention to the surroundings in the daily life of his characters. Because I am originally from Maryland, I recognized so many places in this novel which would be of interest to anyone but especially from anyone familiar with the Baltimore area and the state's capital. I'm not the bravest of women and do not like being in an empty house at night so I was on edge in several cases. Glad I'm in a high rise after reading this.

12 of 13 people found the following review helpful. I liked the concept and ideas, but it wasn't developed well. But I was curious enough to read the whole thing. By Jane Not enough character development. No details about why Tess became a tough guy. It just says she spent 10 years learning to fight. No development of the bad guys. It reminds me of something for an action film - investigate, ask questions, and fight scenes.I was annoyed with an overused cliche for the victim. In the beginning of the story, Cat is down on her luck looking for work. She doesn’t speak the language, so about all she can do is cleaning or dish washing. Her car was stolen which had her clothes and things. She has no money. That is a good enough reason for me. But the author added “Cat needs to earn money to get medical treatment for her sick mother.” That was overdone. The story didn’t need that. It would have been better to open the story with theft of her car and her things. I wanted to know more about that and maybe more about why she was in Poland - more story about her. I also wanted to know what happened with Cat later in the story.I was annoyed with stupidity in a fight scene. I was disappointed with the ending - unfinished and unsatisfying - both of these are in Spoilers below.CAUTION SPOILERS:STUPIDITY. Tess told an elderly sick lady to wait in a place. Tess then went to fight the bad guys. When the lady heard gun shots she left her safe place and went to find Tess, saying she heard gun shots and wanted to help. She had no weapon or ability. All she did was get taken by a bad guy who held her hostage to get Tess.A main good guy character is killed. The victim Cat is not found. Then all of a sudden Tess is in another country thinking about other things. There was no transition. It’s like Tess gave up in the middle of the job. Unsatisfying.DATA:Narrative mode: 3rd person. Story length: 157 pages. Swearing language: strong including religious swear words. Sexual content: one violent rape. Setting: current day mostly Poland with a little New York. Copyright: 2015. Genre: mystery suspense.

The first chapter will draw you in, make you care, and quickly grab you and pull you along on an action filled trip. The author writes so descriptively you can hear, feel, smell and almost taste what is happening in the story. The main character, Tess, is such a strong woman, yet she is written in a very realistic fashion. Strong, yes, but also very vulnerable and while she can kill in a blink, she cares enough to step in and stop the evil happening to good people. Mr. Lee has the talent to make the reader care not only about the people Tess tries to help, but you end up caring a lot about Tess. There is so much happening in the book, yet I could at all times follow the path Mr. Lee took me on. There was no teasing the reader or throwing obstacles into the story to confuse the reader. It was straight forward action, clearly and skillfully written, that make it simply impossible to put down, and by the end I HAVE to get the next book to find out more about Tess. Do I wish to be Tess - no way. Do I want Tess on my side in a fight - you bet!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. female heroine, femme fatale, female toughness, girl power By Linn C. This book really moves. There is action in every chapter. I like how foreign words are interspersed with the English ones, emphasizing that events are happening in a foreign country and this is potentially to a disadvantage for some of the players. It's a fun read because it has toughness, sleuthing, villains and helpful passersby. The descriptions help the reader "see" as much of the surroundings as possible. There is not a lot of extra or unnecessary and lengthy prose, this book gets right to the point. It's fun to follow a female heroine, who is tough and cleaver. I recommend this to anyone who likes any of the following characters: Jack Reacher, Jonathan Grave, Lindsay Boxer, Samantha Kofer, or Lucas Davenport's daughter Nettie. A good read and only the first of several! Hooray.

When one thinks of white collar crime, one usually thinks of embezzlement, stock manipulation, insider trading and corporate espionage. This novel includes those financial crimes plus blackmail, murder, gambling fixes and drug running. At first the story seems unfocused because almost all of the cast of characters are introduced in the first 10% of the book. Unfortunately, the Kindle X-ray function is not enabled on this book and would have been an aid early on in helping to keep the characters straight. However, after a few more chapters, the characters begin to become more distinct and they run the gamut from pinstriped executives to muscle bound street thugs. The author has a good ear and can successfully put a variety of nuanced speech patterns to paper. The author uses a good blend of narrative and dialogue to move the plot along. The chapters are short and the book is divided into four sections. The first two sections slowly build the story. We have individuals making bad decisions and trying to find ways out of their problems. We have others using those faulty decisions to further their own interests. The last two sections are the most suspenseful as all the plot points come together. The story is nicely developed and well written from beginning to the satisfying ending.Disclosure: A copy of this novel was provided to me for review. I have no connection to the author or the publisher and my opinion is solely based upon my enjoyment and perception of the book.

Brilliantly written and totally gripping By Ann Massey (Perth, Australia) A white collar crime is thought of as non-violent crime that is committed by someone of respectability for financial gain. In “White Collar Blackmail” by Peter Ralph, “The Wolf of Wall Street” meets “The Firm” as group of white collar criminals use brutal mafia tactics in pursuit of wealth. Todd Hanson, an accountant and mathematical whizz with numbers has developed a betting system that actually works. His success at the track brings him to the attention of villains who want to use insider knowledge to make a killing on the stock exchange. Falling into their clutches when his system fails, he accepts a loan to pay his gambling debts. He soon finds out that in this world of high finance, and shady deals his benefactors will stop at nothing, not even murder to achieve their ends. The fast- moving action of this novel and Peter Ralph’s personal knowledge of financial corporations gives “White Collar Blackmail” a unique authenticity. What a stunner ... I couldn’t put it down.

By Bonnie Stowe Whenever I start reading a Peter Ralph book, I have learned that I need to make sure I don't have work to do for a day or two. His creativity and character development hook me from the first page, and I feel compelled to try to read it from start to finish. That's not always possible, but I do my best. He has the perfect background for writing a story that is almost believable. The reason I used the word "almost" is because I honestly hope that no one is really as devious or evil as he portrays. I LOVE his books and am looking forward to reading not only all that he has already written but all future publications. I am so happy I found him! He has already entertained me for hours and know I will thoroughly enjoy everything he writes. He takes me out of my paradise, island world into one that is quite exciting and stimulating. I highly recommend Peter Ralph's books to anyone who wants a terrific ride down life's highway.

Miller This is the perfect companion for an October's eve, when the wind rustles the leaves and owls hoot in the distance. Full of crazy, lovable characters, Tequila will Kill Ya might be the perfect mix of trick and treat. Set on a small Florida Key, this fast-paced story has something for everyone. Friendship, conflict, romance and humor abound in this gem. There are the usual suspects, delivered in unexpected ways. There are tantalizing details to take you inside the world of magick, and just enough information to make you hungry for more. The good guys: doctors and white witches and barkeeps and of course, Rafe, must do battle with the bad guys: the Voodoo priest and his minions. . .Who's Rafe? Ahhh, the answer lies within...you really need to know him...yes, really.I received an ARC of this novella, and I ate it up in one sitting.

Another fun adventure in Tequila Key By Texas Tequila Will Kill YaA new food truck appears in Tequila Key with the tag line 'margaritas you'll die for.' White witch, Luna, discusses this development with bartender, Beau, when she visits his bar after work. Beau's curiosity about the competition and what happens when he samples one of their margaritas throw Luna, Miss Elva and Rafe into another frighteningly funny adventure just in time for Halloween. If you are into the series you will love this installment. If you are a new reader, you probably should read the previous books first. Each story is a standalone, but characters reappear and new ones are introduced in each volume. I was given an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Anyways, we are back at Tequila Key's for Halloween and more trouble is in the air. I mentioned before that Miss Elva is my favorite character in this series so I was happy that she was more of a main character this time. Although a little sad that my favorite beverage was used so maliciously I was excited to read about how it was used. My husband did a college paper about real Zombies and I enjoyed that aspect being used. Great book.
