A Vault Of Grave Secrets By Alima Livzletlivz On Her Father's Grave starts off with a bang, leading the series Rogue River" co-written by Kendra Elliot and Melinda Leigh. Two of the most prolific thriller writers of today, Rogue River Series, is set in the small town of Solitude, OR.Stevie Taylor returns to her hometown after her father, the town's Police Chief passes away due to a heart attack. Having survived some gruesome crimes in LAPD as a cop, Stevie wants nothing more than to stay away from the past pain and reconnect with her roots as a patrol office in her hometown. Her return coincides with the death of a teenager under suspicious circumstances, and with the meeting of Zane Duncan, the new Chief of Police. In a town where everyone knows everyone, and everyone keeps everyone in sight, Stevie and Zane have to team up to get to the bottom of these death as there seem to be more bodies turning up. The flare of desire and chemistry that ignites between Stevie and Zane is a sure surprise for both, but something that they both like to take it further.I always love the way Kendra etches her characters. She gives them so many layers of depth and individuality; it's like peeling an onion, as you get to know their strengths and weaknesses, one layer a time. Kendra does a brilliant job of keeping the narration open and pure, with feelings and emotions decked out, with a hint of secrets that may divide the small town, and keeping the essence of a small town's thinking and beliefs. The aura of anticipation as to what's going to happen next or the blossoming relationship between Stevie and Zane, only adds more excitement to the story. On Her Father's Grave keeps you glued until the last page. These are short novellas of four in the series, with Kendra working one end of an angle featuring Stevie and Zane, and Melinda caricaturing Carly and Seth from the other end, both teams with one single goal to get to the evil behind the killings by an unidentified drug. The icing on the cake and this shows the prowess of a seasoned writer, is how she manages not to leave it as a cliffhanger, yet she makes us yearn and moan for more. The desire to get to the next book is so strong, that no reader will be able to resist getting to the next three books....not a chance! Can't wait to read how Melinda Leigh's given life to the characters of Carly Taylor and Seth Harding in the second book, "Gone To Her Grave".Received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley for an honest review

Melinda Leigh will write the next one, and so on. It’s an interesting concept, and it will be fun to see how it all plays out. I think Ms. Elliot has a winner with this mystery/romance.Stevie Taylor has just moved back to her hometown of Solitude, after a ten year absence. Her father, the police chief, has just died, so she decides to stay, and gets hired by the police department. Since she was a LA based police officer, she has the experience to do so. She has a big family that lives there, and she misses them. The night before her first day, she is called to the death scene of a teenage boy. New police chief, Zane, is pretty much attracted to her immediately. This was a short read, as usual with any novella, but I didn’t think it suffered, due to it’s length. Stevie was pretty fully realized by the author, as a good cop, one that went through some bad experiences in LA. Not only is she a good cop, but she is also just a good, caring person, one that is grieving for her father. Zane is a smart, and honorable man, one that knows a good thing(Stevie)when he sees one. But he is her boss, so…The mystery was well realized, and of course written. Could it have been more intricate? Of course, but since it was a novella, that goes with the territory. How does a healthy teenage boy die without a mark on him, in sight of most of his friends? Drugs? Or was he murdered? That’s just one of the questions here. Another one would be, why is everyone interested in her father’s journals? What’s been going on in this small town since she’s been away?I enjoyed this short read, and found it very easily read, and I got pulled into the story just like I would have with a regular sized novel. There’s still more mystery to be had here, so I am looking forward to reading the rest in this series. I recommend this to probably ages 15 plus, no sexual situations, but there is violence.(PureTextuality.com)

When Stevie Taylor's father, Solitude Police Chief Bill Taylor, died unexpectedly of a heart attack, things began to change in her world. Ten plus years of working as a cop in Los Angeles had left her bitter and disillusioned, and coming home again to fill the empty place in the police department's roster as well as filling the empty space at the family table seemed to be the right thing to do.So with little or no hesitation, ten days after Big Bill's death and five days after giving notice, Stevie was back in Solitude in her own place. She'd missed her whole family while she'd been away and was glad to be able to return and become a part of their lives again. But like the move to L.A. had changed Stevie, ten years plus had also changed her family and friends back in Solitude. Her older brother James, the town's mayor, is apparently having trouble in his marriage that he's desperately trying to downplay. Her sister and niece have settled close to the family home; and her youngest brother Bruce is still underfoot at the family house--which she's grateful for right now but sometimes worries about. Her old boyfriend Eric is divorced and still living in Solitude - and seems anxious to get reacquainted. But Stevie isn't sure that she feels the same.Chief of Police Roy Krueger had called Stevie out to the scene of a suspicious death the night before she was to start working, so she's surprised when she gets to the P.D. the next day and he's nowhere to be found. Surprisingly, Roy had quit and disappeared. To make matters worse--Roy had replaced himself with a stranger--Zane Duncan. She meets Zane, and after receiving little to no explanation for Roy's absence, fills him in on the night before.Hunter Brandt was a local teenager who'd supposedly died of natural causes --heart failure, possibly--but he'd been behaving strangely right before his death. While it's determined that Hunter's blood alcohol level was low, they also find out that there was a suspicious substance in his system that hasn't been identified. Is there a new drug being peddled in town? The kids close to Hunter say they know nothing, but their behavior tells a different story. His friend Peter described his behavior as odd and makes it sound like he was hallucinating before he collapsed. His girlfriend Grace Ellis, in particular, seems like she's hiding something. Later, after being pressed, she describes an older man she saw around Hunter and his friends but can't describe him well enough for a match. Was someone out at the lake that night selling drugs? While working the case, Stevie begins to become familiar with all the local players and becomes especially suspicious of one man in particular, Ted Warner. When another, similar death occurs, Stevie and new police chief Zane start moving in closer to their target.I really enjoyed the building of suspense and character relationships in this new series. While this first novel was short and ended almost too soon, it had more than enough description and emotional connection between the characters to draw me in and keep me invested in reading more about them. The arc for this mystery was solved in this book, but there are several overarching threads that I can see reaching into the second, third, and possibly fourth and last book. Some are pure mystery and some are emotional connections that I'd like to see--romantic and familial. Stevie has moved back to town but is only starting to see the changes in her family as they start to reveal themselves, one layer at a time. I think that there is a lot more going on in Solitude than at first meets the eye; and, I'm very interested in seeing what comes next, as well as seeing how well the second author's style meshes and complements the first author's style. Can't wait!Originally published on http://itsaboutthebook.com.
