“Owing to the sudden death of Miss Charmian Karslake this theatre is closed until further notice. Money for tickets already booked will be refunded.”Who killed Charmian Karslake, the famous American actress, on the night of the ball at Hepton Abbey? Who was the mysterious Peter Hailsham who had been present at the ball and had since vanished into thin air? What was his connection, if any, with the respectable County family of Penn-Moreton at whose house the murder had taken place? How Inspector Stoddart and his assistant Harbord solve these questions, and the surprising discoveries they make in the course of their Investigations, form the basis for one of their most devilish mysteries.Who Killed Charmian Karslake? is the third of Annie Haynes' Inspector Stoddart Mysteries. First published in 1929, it was out of print for over 80 years until this new edition, which also features an introduction by crime fiction historian Curtis Evans.“A model detective story... a good mental exercise for the distracted reader who has just received his Super-Tax Demand. (The publishers) have again produced a good book.” London Mercury

About the Author

Annie Haynes was born in 1865, the daughter of an ironmonger. By the first decade of the twentieth century she lived in London and moved in literary and early feminist circles. Her first crime novel, The Bungalow Mystery, appeared in 1923, and another nine mysteries were published before her untimely death in 1929. Who Killed Charmian Karslake? appeared posthumously, and a further partially-finished work, The Crystal Beads Murder, was completed with the assistance of an unknown fellow writer, and published in 1930.

A family of country gentry comes under suspicion of murder By Patto Charmian Karslake, celebrated American actress, accepts an invitation to a ball at the picturesque country estate of the Penn-Moretons. The morning after the ball she is found murdered.Inspector Stoddart handles the case with all his usual painstaking attention to detail. Everyone in the house party is suspect, particularly the male members of the aristocratic Penn-Moreton family. But as Stoddart digs into the past of the actress, he interviews people in all classes. These novels by Annie Haynes are a window into British society in the nineteen twenties with its varied class distinctions. It's also interesting to see how this British author portrays Americans.Who Killed Charmian Karslake appeared posthumously. It is a classic country house party mystery. The plot is thick with secrets. This is not my favorite Annie Haynes mystery, but it held my interest throughout.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. My first, so-so, experience with Annie Haynes. By Bradley Friedman “’Beastly mess the place seems to be in,’ grumbled Sir Arthur Penn-Moreton, looking round the room with a disgusted air.“’Well, if you will give balls you have to put up with the aftermath,’ said Dicky, his younger brother, screwing his monocle in his left eye as he spoke.“Dicky was already seated at the table devouring kidneys and bacon with apparent relish.”This is how Annie Haynes’ 1929 mystery Who Killed Charmian Karslake? opens. I counted about six clichés right there: the country house setting, just as we found at the beginning of E.R. Punshon’s Ten Star Clues, the bluff lord and his monocled fop of a younger brother sitting down to a heavy English breakfast the morning after a ball. All we need next is a murder to interrupt the proceedings. But what’s this? Here comes Brook, butler at Hepton Abbey, with news that the house’s celebrated guest, actress Charmian Karslake, cannot be roused behind the locked door of her bedroom.Frankly, the more intriguing mystery here is the story of Annie Haynes herself, a sickly woman whose friendship with a noted feminist named Ada Heather-Bigg, whose backing may have helped Haynes publish twelve mystery novels, two of them posthumously (including this one). I was intrigued by the story of Haynes that Curtis Evans unfolded in his blog, The Passing Tramp, and continued in the introduction to this novel. So I selected my favorite title from amongst the eight that have been reissued by Dean Street Press and settled down to read – and hopefully enjoy - another lost mystery from the Golden Age. Evidently, during her lifetime, Haynes enjoyed great popularity and was, at least for a time as Curtis writes in his introduction, “the main British female competitor to Agatha Christie.” I have to say that the fact that Christie and Haynes were the only female mystery writers to be published by The Bodley Head and that this company embraced Haynes while Christie did everything she could to get out of a bad deal – all this made me a bit leery as I approached this book. I fear my forebodings were not without cause. It’s hard not to compare this novel to the Punshon mystery I just read (and reviewed previously: ) Both involve a noble family, a country estate, and murder. The similarity ends there, however, for a number of reasons. First off, Haynes’ book feels more like a police procedural than a closed circle mystery. The focus here is largely on Detective Inspector Stoddart and his assistant Alfred Harbord. They have a likable relationship, and Harbord is hardly a lesser entity than his boss in terms of intellect and ability. Very little time is spent at the mansion interviewing the suspects. Instead, Stoddart and Harbord move about between the village of Hepton and London, trying to find out just who Charmian Karslake was and what the meaning of a certain overheard conversation might signify.Frankly, their detective work did not strike me as particularly impressive or thrilling, just lucky. (Every place Stoddart enters provides information. Whenever he needs to talk to somebody, that person can be found walking down the road in the Inspector’s direction.) And as they scurry about, Haynes springs more and more of those clichés that I fear have given Golden Age writers a bad name. As late as 1929, Hayne’s writing style seems Victorian, both in the turns of phrase, the melodramatic trappings, even the characters’ names that seem straight out of Dickens. There’s the American millionaire, Silas P. Juggs, who made his fortune in canned soup and pushes his way about the scene while everyone around him rolls their eyes. Worse even is Charmian’s French maid, Celestine Dubois, whom Haynes endows with an accent that could spread hard cheese:“Me! Me! I know nosin – nosin at all. Two days ago Mees Karslake, she tell me to pack her sings for dis ball, and I am pleased, for it is triste always in this land of fogs, when one goes out novere. But if I had known - “You get the idea. Compared to her, Christie’s way with foreigners is positively enlightened. Here’s a speech under similar circumstances, made by Louise Bourget, Linnet Doyle’s French maid in Christie’s Death on the Nile:“What could I have seen or heard? I was on the deck below. My cabin, it was on the other side of the boat, even. It is impossible that I should have heard anything. Naturally if I had been unable to sleep, if I had mounted the stairs, then perhaps I might have seen this assassin, this monster, enter or leave Madame’s cabin . . . “The villagers of Hepton speak with their own thick patois as well, and Dicky Penn-Moreton sounds (and looks) a great deal like Charlie McCarthy, Edgar Bergen’s dummy. The stilted dialogue is crammed to the gills with 1920’s slang, and yet I couldn’t shake the feeling that Haynes really didn’t know who or what she was writing about. I want to say that at least a reader can get a sense of the times, but these people – the rich, the poor, the police – all failed to convince me.Worse than that, the mystery plot amounted to too little: the clueing was simplistic, and the actions and reactions of characters often bordered on the nonsensical. To take just one example, one has to ask oneself why, mere days after a murder, the detective in charge would let all the suspects leave town – even the country! – just so he could have a free hand in searching the premises. Doesn’t Scotland Yard get to search wherever they want with impunity? Ah, what do I know? The hackneyed clichés – and I have to believe they were clichés even in 1929 – continue right till the end, and I would like nothing better than to discuss this ending with someone, but I’ve spoiled enough. Suffice it to say that rules are broken and fair play flies out the window, as far as I am concerned.

Memories of Turtle is the unapologetic true account of my interaction with Omaha's meth culture. Spanning more than a decade, it revolves around my friendship with Turtle, who became addicted to meth when he was seventeen. Memories of Turtle is the inevitable result of living in a modern city where vice ferments. It should also serve as a warning signpost for current users of methamphetamine to seek help to end their addictions, and for curious drug seekers and future users to steer clear from this dangerous drug.

By IndianHills4ever This is a powerful and disturbing memoir, expertly written by Joseph Simmons. Simmons perfectly captures the sadness and missed opportunities behind his best friend, nicknamed Turtle, as a result of Turtle's drug addicted lifestyle. Poetic descriptive language elevates this above the usual writings about drug addicts. In addition, Simmons' refusal to judge his best friend serves to reenforce the wasted life and potential that's a result of victims of Meth addiction. This is a must-read for anyone who's concerned about our society and the influence of hard drugs on young people today.

Through his perspective, we get a combination of an honest stark portrayal of what happens to Turtle at the same time we get an emotional connection to those events through Simmons' close friendship with him. It's the perfect balance (or mixture) of attachment and detachment, allowing bare horrors while evoking both compassion and resignation. There is some damn good stuff in here, very moving.

Loved learning about the Hollywood history tied into the location. Very satisfying.

A Western With a Real-Life Twist By Fritz Holznagel You can't read this book and not want to visit Red's Horse Ranch (maybe going back in time to hang out with John Wayne while you're at it). Anyone who likes western tales will like this mystery with a real-life western setting and based on some true-life western characters. "Red Reins" is the right title for a super-colorful story that includes horses, action and (yikes!) some well-placed blood splatters. Warmly recommended!

“A phenomenal read.”—Sharon Sala, New York Times and USA Today bestselling authorIs it a flesh and blood killer—or restless spirits?According to Sophie the psychic, beautiful Edisto Beach becomes a hotbed of troublemaking spirits every August. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Edisto Jinx is No Jinx! By Janet I am a great fan of C. Hope Clark, so I'm always happy to have a chance to read something new by her. Edisto Jinx did not disappoint. In Callie Morgan, Clark has fashioned a main character it is taking me some time to care about. I'm not sure what it is that makes this so. The writing is brisk, crisp, clear, entertaining. The mechanics are all there, the storyline an interesting one, the supporting characters an interesting lot. I've just had trouble warming to Callie herself. Still, that did not take away from my enjoyment of the book.Edisto Island is a cool setting for this series, of which Edisto Jinx is the second installment. The book centers on weird deaths which take place each August, deaths it takes former detective Morgan to tie together. I enjoy seeing my main characters putting two and two together and coming up with four when most everybody else has arrived at three, or five. Of course we know Callie will solve the mysteries in the end, but it's great fun watching her do so.I very much enjoy Callie's interactions with her teenage son. Well, perhaps enjoy isn't the best word. Perhaps best to say that their clashes ring true and hit close to home, and that I think that will be the case for many readers.Sophie, Callie's next door neighbor and friend, is having a hard time with the August jinx of deaths, since it always gets the spirits in her house aroused, thus giving her many sleepless nights. We soon begin to wonder if Sophie has really "lost it" this time, and if she will survive the month. We certainly are pulling for her, because she's a fun, likeable character. As is usually the case with Clark's books, there's soon a sizeable cast of well-developed supporting characters present -- just enough, not so many that one can't keep them separated from each other. This is one of Clark's greatest strengths, her ability to bring her entire cast to life.Another major strength is Clark's own background in law enforcement, specifically as a federal investigator. Her writing is never over the top or unbelievable, nor filled with excessive derring do that would make me question her credibility. In other words, she never takes too much poetic license when she writes, but just enough to make the story stronger and faster moving. I like that about C. Hope Clark. She knows when to take a risk by taking the storyline a bit farther afield, but she always brings it back into the believable, and I never even consider closing the book before The End.Clark succeeded in giving me the kind of experience I always hope for when reading a book for the first time: I soon felt as if I were a summer visitor to Edisto Island myself. I do so love getting lost in a good book. So now I'm (impatiently) waiting for book number three.

The residence of Edisto Beach welcomed me into the dilemma surrounding the death of Brea Jamison. Callie Morgan, Ex Boston Detective, investigative instincts kick in and stir up more than the residence of this tiny island want to deal with. A serial killer is on the loose but no one believes Callie.August is a busy tourist season on Edisto Island, add a few spirts tormenting Callie’s neighbor Sophia and some dirty laundry from other neighbors past and the story just keeps getting better.I appreciated the broken hero that is Callie Morgan. I watched her begin to heal amidst the drama in the first book in the series Murder on Edisto. Now a few months later Callie continues to struggle, grow and find herself again. C. Hope Clark settings are so believable even though I have no idea what a Palmetto looks like. I felt the heat and the sea breezes. I walked with Callie in the blackness of the moonless night at the climax as she confronts the villain. That was a definite-don’t anyone interrupt me moment.Rich settings, interesting characters and unexpected twists. The use of tweeter was both surprising and brilliant. I felt Callie’s story could end here and I would be content. But then again surely there are more secrets to unfold on Edisto Beach. Looking forward to more books by Hope.

Hope's Clark second book in the series featuring Edisto Beach, SC. This time Callie is investigating mysterious deaths that occur every August known by locals as the "Edisto Jinx". But is there really a jinx or are these accidental deaths just that - accidents? Despite being warned to leave it well alone, Callie begins investigating while someone named MyOutake eerily reports her every move on social media. Can Callie solve the mystery of the jinx and identify MyOutake before someone else is killed? Danger lurks just outside the shadows and keeps you glued to the book as you're pulled deeper into the jinx mystery. I dare you to try to figure out who the suspect is. This book is so brilliantly written that you'll be guessing until the book is almost finished. Then you'll be racing against the clock with Callie as she tries to bring down MyOutake and save one more life.

Heartland, the sequel to Storm Rising, while not as great, is a good read. I was hoping for Heartland to include a narrative on the global reaction to U.S. actions (taken in both books) particularly on the part of China. Aside from some passing U.N. references, the story remains silent on the global implications of ,and international reaction to, American military actions. The rather constrained Russian reaction, while hopeful, doesn't ring quite right. The credentials, background, and character traits of the new president present an interesting commentary on the type of leadership that a broken nation desperately needs and speaks to a widening hole in society. Overall, a worthy read.

SURPRISE SEQUEL HITS THE MARK By JasonP After reading Storm Rising, I didn't think a sequel was forthcoming because of Storm Rising's finality, but I was wrong. Naiman has stunned me with a story that is every bit as suspenseful as its predecessor. I must admit to not enjoying the terrorist attack which is too vivid and unnerving because it could happen. As in the first book, the characters are not plastic, but evolve with the unexpected events taking place around them. The new female president was the best character. Sure wish someone like her was in this year's presidential race. The descriptions of the nation's capital during the crisis are too real, as are the events following it. The last third of the story reminded me of the great political conspiracy movies of my youth, e.g. Seven Days in May and Fail Safe. Not a perfect book by any means, but I heartily recommend Heartland.

Scary plot By Amazon Customer Being a fan of political fiction, I read many of this genre (a favorite being "7 Days in May"), and, can give a fair evaluation of plot development and style. This author has a very distinctive approach to his craft- well researched detail making the scenes come alive, and, an intellectual structure to the prose which is very appropriate to stories involving characters of immense ego's, driven, and, of questionable ethics. The plot develops quickly and builds to a scary finish. The premise is troubling for today's world, but well worth the read, and, post completion, discussion within book club circles. Well done.Written to be read in a single sitting or vacation break. Enjoy and ponder before the next elections.

Travis Anderson is the picture of success. Handsome, sexy, and rich he could have pretty much any woman he wants. Sadly, the only ones he seems to find think that size matters. The size of his wallet, that is. He needs a woman to love him for himself. Aubrey Grayson just might be the one he’s hoped for. Aubrey thinks Travis is an amazing man, with or without his fortune. Growing up in foster care, she learned to appreciate the simple things in life. She’s happy going on a picnic and watching the sunset. No wallet needed. So when Travis takes her on an elegant weekend getaway in Florida, she doesn’t care about the beautiful gowns and fancy jewels. What she does care about is bumping into the hateful man from her past who decides it would be fun to tell Travis all the shameful secrets she has tried so hard to hide. When she finds a dead body, Aubrey quickly becomes a suspect and has to come clean to Travis about everything. Nothing in the world could be worse than admitting the whole sordid story… unless it’s being branded a killer. But there’s no way Travis is going to allow Aubrey to go to prison for a murder she didn’t commit. If he has to catch the real killer himself, that’s just what he’ll do.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Good mystery, good heat, good couple By Chitown Reader Great addition to a series that is well written. Nits are few: Travis' frequent use of "Kitten" as term of endearment made me roll my eyes and there were more than a couple of I's that should have been me's. All else was most excellent. Travis and Aubrey have worked together for 6-months and have just started a personal relationship. Aubrey needs to reveal something of her past to Travis but she fears doing so. They travel to a resort where a birthday party for one of Travis' mentors is being held. They do some tip-toeing around each other the day they arrive at the resort because this represents a new level in their relationship. Bree's plan to 'fess up to Travis comes to a screeching halt when a body is found at the resort, and it's someone from her past with whom she argued earlier at the birthday party. That context set, the rest of the book is filled with putting together the clues that will identify the killer while watching Brea and Travis fall in love. We also catch up with folks from previous books including Shane, Wyatt, Gigi, and others. This book scores a 5-for character development with extra credit for magically combining vulnerability with strength, a 4-for mystery (I figured it out fairly early) and definite 5-for heat. Yep, the sheets do sizzle but nothing that made me feel uncomfortable. Travis and Aubrey were a great team while sleuthing, in the office and in bed. They might be one of my top-5 couples this year, despite the fact that he's loaded and I usually hate the whole "rich guy" thing. Color me team Travis and Aubrey.

Travis is a dream. He is an Alpha male that goes after what he wants and he wants Aubrey. Aubrey wants Travis too, but doesn't think she is good enough due to her past. Together they find love and the killer. . .but, one almost looses the other by the killers bullet. Read and find out what happens . . . you won't be disappointed!

The F-word was totally over used. I'm not a prude and have heard it used before but, this was overkill. It makes you think that the foul words were used to get a word quota. Not sure I'll read anymore of this author's books.

Inspector Anita Sundström is called away from Christmas with her mother to help investigate a domestic death. Her initial relief at escaping a dull festive season soon fades when she and sidekick, Hakim Mirza, find themselves dealing with a difficult case involving the murder of an unloved father and disliked neighbour. Though suspects and motives abound, they are having difficulty identifying the murder weapon. Has the killing something to do with the victim’s past, or is the reason closer to home? It’s not the Christmas Anita was anticipating, nor the conclusion she was expecting. ‘In Anita Sundström, Torquil MacLeod is developing a Sarah Lund for our decade’ Café Thinking ‘For anyone who enjoys an intelligent, well-plotted police procedural.’ Crimeworm ‘Anita is a tough female protagonist.’ Off the Shelf ‘I adore the whole Swedish vibe. I could just move there and sit in a pub with Anita.’ Northern Crime ‘Sundström herself is a great creation.’ Blue Book Balloon

But I have enjoyed the Malmo mysteries so much that I made an exception, and I'm glad I did! This one takes place in the few days around Christmas. Moberg is off in Tenerife as are Lasse and Jazmin, so there are some fewer characters to solve an interesting case Jultomten has been killed just before it was time to distribute packages. This is the way MacLeod can interject the Swedish Christmas traditions which adds greatly to the story line. Some words had me scurrying to google, and I'm hooked on learning more. It's Hakim, on call for the holiday, and Anita, called back from a visit to her Mother's (a happy occurrence) who handle the case of the death of Tord Sundin (Jultomen). Nearly simultaneously, there is a spate of house burglaries of well-heeled men whose homes are completely cleaned out. Both cases offer some interesting speculation, and deftly as ever, the two are solved. The ending is, as always, satisfying, and while I'm looking forward already to the next full-length tale, I have to say this one, novella or not, was just the right length. Now I'm ready for Christmas carols!

By Gorilichis I liked the mystery and the resolution, how seemingly unrelated cases tie together but... seriously, Anita Sundstrom and her team are the Keystone Cops of literary police officers. They are smart enough to figure out whodunit and why, but they can't seem to work out how to arrest someone without it becoming a huge mess. This is only my second novel in this series, and yet I can already see a pattern. I don't want the cops I read about to be dumber than me and characters making stupid choices is my biggest pet peeve. I would have given this novella 4 stars if not for this.

A call comes in to the duty detective about what seems to be a domestic murder. He assumes it will be boring and simple. If I had not read previous entries in the Malmo series, that is what I would have thought and I would not have purchased the book. However, despite the shortness of the story, the author manages character development, an interesting plot and a few surprises. Quite an achievement. I look forward to the next full length entry in this excellent series.
